As you may be aware, the Province of Manitoba will be conducting a review of education, with public consultation, on K-12 education in Manitoba. Your local Brandon School Division Board wants to ensure that informed community voices are heard in the pending public consultation, with a focus on decision-making at the local level that responds to community needs. We are committed to the belief that local decision-making is at the heart of public education. It follows that school boards should remain locally elected, and decisions should be made within the communities they affect. It would be greatly appreciated if you were willing to provide visible public support for school boards, and the role they play in shaping local schools by providing any of the following:

• short statements from current students, recent graduates or parents/guardians about the value and impact of local school offerings.

• short statements from parents, community members, business or community groups about the value they see in a responsive, accessible and local school board.

• short statements describing a program or service that is available in your school division because of a board decision, (for example, all day/every day Kindergarten; Indigenous Language instruction) and the positive impact that it has on students and/or community.

• any other type of concrete information that illustrates the theme of local voices, local choices in action.

Submissions should include the name of the individual making the statement, the name of the school division (Brandon School Division) and any other relevant affiliation. We would also request a photo of either the individual, or something that illustrates the initiative being discussed. It is intended that this information will be shared on the Manitoba School Boards Association Facebook page, so your permission to do so is required. Thank you in advance for your support of local school boards. Dr. Linda Ross, Chairperson Board of Trustees Brandon School Division Email: [email protected]

Brandon School Division’s Continuous Improvement Plan was designed to meet the reporting and planning criteria of the K-12 Framework for Continuous Improvement. This plan is a result of a collaborative effort, bringing Senior Administration, School Leaders, Curriculum Specialists, our Board of Trustees, parents & students, and our community together, to create and align our Four Ultimate Outcomes:

• Improved Literacy Achievement • Improved Numeracy Achievement

• Decreasing the Indigenous Achievement Gap • Decreasing the English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Achievement Gap

In order to achieve these Ultimate Outcomes, we have developed five (5) Priority Areas, with a clear focus on two (2) during the first year of implementation:

• Responding to Student Diversity—Our Schools will effectively utilize system supports through the Response to Intervention (RTI) Framework.

• Best Practices—Increased consistency of the implementation of Divisionally identified and prioritized Best Practices in Literacy & Numeracy.

• Early Learning—Decreased gap in observable foundational literacy skills among Indigenous and EAL students upon school entry.

• Students’ Sense of Belonging—Increase in Indigenous students reporting a positive sense of belonging.

• School-Family Relationships—Increased positive interactions with our more vulnerable families.

Our current strategic priority is Responding to Diversity through a division-wide implementation of the Response to Intervention framework. Much of the work in the 2017-2018 school year focused on implementing the necessary structures and furthering the understanding and mindset needed to effectively adopt an RTI framework.

During the 2017-2018 School Year, our general process has been to break large and long-term RTI implementation targets into smaller targets, and then systematically monitor our progress. Implementation targets reached division wide included: • Increased understanding of Response to Intervention

through various division-wide professional learning opportunities, including: a one-day professional learning workshop with a

renowned RTI expert 6 half-day professional learning sessions in each school

building • Established a School Leadership Team in each school • Worked towards establishing a culture of collective

responsibility in each school

• Developed an understanding of Foundational Outcomes • Formed Collaborative Teacher Teams (CTT) in each school • Created time for CTT’s to collaborate • Identified essential Academic and Social Behaviours • Identified and prioritized literacy and numeracy

Foundational Outcomes from Kindergarten through Grade 9

• Established a School Intervention Team at each school.

Using the Framework of Continuous Improvement, our Continuous Improvement Plan aligns the priorities of the Department of Education & Training, our Board of Trustees, Senior Administration, School Leaders, Curriculum Specialists, our parents & students and our community at large. This plan represents a commitment to high overall achievement in Literacy and Numeracy, with no significant gaps in that achievement for Indigenous or English as an Additional Language Learners. For the past month and a half, the Green Acres Makerspace

crew has been meeting every Monday night to learn how to

make video games, animate movies, and code apps. These

students from Grades 5 to 8 are shown different tools and

technologies to assist with creating these and they are having

fun while doing it. By planning their own projects, we have

seen a diverse range of stories and games come out of the

group. We finish these different tinkering projects in December

and we’ll be taking apart physical computers in January.

A makerspace is a collaborative work space inside a

school, library or separate public/private facility for

making, learning, exploring, and sharing using high-

tech to no tech tools.

As part of Pink Shirt Day, Shaw Communications Inc. launched the Shaw Kindness Sticks Grant Program on February 28, 2018 encouraging students across Canada to get creative and think of the different ways they could promote kindness and respect in their schools. Shaw encouraged youth to share how they would make Kindness Stick in their school for a chance to receive a Shaw Youth Grant of up to $5,000 to bring their idea to life. King George School’s Youth Revolution Group received $5,000 from Shaw to help spread kindness in our community. Their submission was selected to receive the grant by an expert judging panel and was selected as one of ten recipients from over 150 submissions from schools across the country.
