We are not certain when it will be here completely but that does not prevent us from dealing with SPRING Events. Students are back to school for their last term and the excitement of all the outdoor spring sporng events. Several of our school yards are busily engaged with soccer games, baseball, praccing for track and field and just enjoying the playgrounds. As teachers, students and parents throughout the Division were focused on report cards and Parent/Teacher Interviews, your nine trustees (plus part of the Sr. Admin. team) were heavily involved in the Manitoba School Boards Associaon annual meeng in Winnipeg. The event began with an engaging presentaon by Mr. Jamie Vollmer. The essence of his message was to underscore the fact that there is an outdated percepon by each of us that schooling is the same as when we were students in the classroom. This percepon interferes with the reality of what society is today and what business and general livelihood requires of our students as a means of preparing them for successful careers. The complexity of the world is a product of technology and access to knowledge. This event also included numerous workshops from which aendees became apprised of new and innovave pracces that enhance opportunies for our students. Manitoba's Trustees fully realize that sharing valuable experiences and working together enhances our ability to provide for our students. Celebraons of student achievements and program developments also took place. We are proud of our schools and learn about their diversies when we aend various events throughout the year. In March, invitaons to King George and Vincent Massey schools provided us with opportunies for involvement in the mulculturalism which has become a large part of our landscape. From celebrang the cultures through food, dance, song and amazing costuming we marvel at the complexity of our Brandon schools and how all our students work together in harmony. Our biggest news in March has been the announcement of our new school (financed in a tradional manner by Manitoba Government under the direcon of the Department of Educaon), it will be located on the currently vacant land at the corner of Ninth Street and Maryland Avenue. Welcome to SPRING!!! We are not certain when it will be here completely but that does not prevent us from dealing with SPRING Events.

Students are back to school for their last term and the excitement of all the outdoor spring sporting events. Several of our school yards are busily engaged with soccer games, baseball, practicing for track and field and just enjoying the playgrounds.

As teachers, students and parents throughout the Division were focused on report cards and Parent/Teacher Interviews, your nine trustees (plus part of the Sr. Admin. team) were heavily involved in the Manitoba School Boards Association annual meeting in Winnipeg.

The event began with an engaging presentation by Mr. Jamie Vollmer. The essence of his message was to underscore the fact that there is an outdated perception by each of us that schooling is the same as when we were students in the classroom. This perception interferes with the reality of what society is today and what business and general livelihood requires of our students as a

means of preparing them for successful careers. The complexity of the world is a product of technology and access to knowledge.

This event also included numerous workshops from which attendees became apprised of new and innovative practices that enhance opportunities for our students. Manitoba's Trustees fully realize that sharing valuable experiences and working together enhances our ability to provide for our students. Celebrations of student achievements and program developments also took place.

We are proud of our schools and learn about their diversities when we attend various events throughout the year. In March, invitations to King George and Vincent Massey schools provided us with opportunities for involvement in the multiculturalism which has become a large part of our landscape. From celebrating the cultures through food, dance, song and amazing costuming we marvel at the complexity of our Brandon schools and how all our students work together in harmony.

Our biggest news in March has been the announcement of our new school (financed in a traditional manner by Manitoba Government under the direction of the Department of Education), it will be located on the currently vacant land at the corner of Ninth Street and Maryland Avenue. Celebration!!!

Enjoy the sunshine!

RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION Response to Intervention (RtI) is a framework for collaborative team problem solving. RtI is actively, systematically anticipating student needs and proactively preparing supports, in both academics and behaviour. When we are doing RtI well, we serve students in a more timely, targeted, and organized manner. When students are not responding to instruction and intervention, we are ready with processes to adjust our practices until all students are responding in ways that reflect growth and progress in their learning.

Since the launch of our Continuous Improvement Plan in March of 2017, you may have overheard our staff using some new language in and around our school buildings.

During the next few issues of BSD On Track, we will be sharing with you some of the language and definitions we have adopted throughout the Division.

Why Response to Intervention (RtI)? RtI’s underlying premise is prevention as an early intervention for

educators to intervene in the early stages for students that demonstrate the need for it.

RtI is not an initiative or a program. The goal of RtI is for the school team to step in and start to intervene, before anyone falls far behind. (Buffum, Mattos, Weber, 2012)

RtI is research-based and has been proven effective. RtI is one of the top three influencers of student achievement.

(Hattie, 2012). As educators, we believe that all students can learn, and we need to do what it takes to ensure student’s success. We also know that some students do not learn at the same rate. Some students will need more time and targeted intervention(s) to learn. (Buffum, Mattos, Webber, 2009)

Formula for RtI: Targeted Instruction + Timely Intervention

= LEARNING

How do we respond when students are struggling in their learning? These are the critical questions to guide our thinking and actions when students are experiencing difficulties: 1. For which students do we have concerns? 2. In what areas do we have concerns?

a. Academics b. Social-emotional c. Behavioral

3. What are we currently doing to support the student & meet the student's needs?

4. What supports will we be providing for the future? 5. Has the student responded to the instruction & intervention

that we have been providing? RtI's Four Guiding Principles For RtI to work well, the following essential guiding principles must be implemented with fidelity and rigour: Collective Responsibility Concentrated Instruction Convergent Assessment Certain Access

The Multi-Level Instructional Approach in RtI The multi-level instructional system approach in RtI, known as tiered instruction and intervention, spans all areas of development for the students, including academic, behavioral and social-emotional. Tier 1 is the most fundamental aspect of RtI As the quality and delivery of evidence-based instruction increases, the need for Tier 2 and 3 interventions decrease

In March, we held Festival du Green Acres! All of our students practiced their weaving, created clay sculptures, and played games related to Festival Du Voyageur. Mr. Williamson joined us and all students took part in hearing him play the fiddle. Ms. Griffith taught our students how to make bannock and Mr. Steele Sr. discussed the Fur Trade. Ms. Cuggy read the story “The Voyageur’s Paddle” and students then created murals. All students got to take home a Sobeys bag, an activity booklet, weaving instructions, bannock recipe, a maple cookie and a GA pencil & tattoo. This day was a great success and we would like to thank the staff who organized this event!

Students, Parents & Staff at Betty Gibson School have been cooking up a storm! With students coming from approximately 17 different countries, such as Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador, China, Ukraine, Syria, Sudan and Ethiopia, Betty Gibson School’s Parent Council members have been hosting cooking classes. Using these classes as a way to bring together their students and parents, Betty Gibson School celebrates the diverse cultural population within their building. Each cooking class features a meal from a different country, and includes tips and recipes for families to take home to prepare healthy meals for their kids. With the help of a grant through the Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation, Betty Gibson School is “Learning & Growing Together.”

Grade 7/8 students at George Fitton School are celebrating their success with the Nutrien Caring for Our Watershed Contest. Oout of 280 submissions, George Fitton School merited TWO placements in the 10 finalist positions! Our finalists are as follows: Phoenix Stevens, Braden Patey, and Andres Rincon Cuadrado for their proposal titled

“Watershed Fest”; and Lyam Haslen and Carson Rice for their proposal titled “#saveourwatershed” In addition to our two finalists, Rooney Gopaul’s project “Habitat Fragmentation” was selected for implementation as well! Although Rooney did not place, Rooney has partnered with the Brandon Riverbank Discovery Centre to reduce habitat fragmentation by building bird houses for the establishment of a Purple Martin Colony on the Assiniboine River!

The two groups of students are now

invited to present their proposals to a panel of

judges at Oak Hammock Marsh on April 28th for the final round of the

contest!
