A MESSAGEFROM OUR CEO

Stephanie ChedidPresident & CEO

“I wouldn’t leave Luther Manor for a billion dollars” – wow, what a statement! When a resident says something like this, it is a true compliment and a testament to the everyday efforts we make in fulfilling our mission to share God’s love by enriching the lives

of older adults. It is an opportunity to step back and realize how important our actions are in the lives of our residents and their families, on remarkable staff and on even those in the broader community.

Rosemary’s story, which I invite you to read on the next page, is just one of the many stories of Luther Manor’s mission coming to life. Shared throughout this magazine are inspiring examples of the abundant life that is available at Luther Manor, and of the service our staff, volunteers, and donors willingly provide to make that life possible.

I hope this issue of Abundant Living inspires you to boldly step out in faith to serve others as we together to fulfill Luther Manor’s mission. Each of us has a vital role in making our communities stronger by sharing God’s love. Even the simplest act can turn into meaningful works for God’s kingdom. Thank you for making Luther Manor a priority in your life.

In this issue...HIGHLIGHTS

I WOULN’T LEAVE LUTHER MANORFOR A BILLION DOLLARSWhat would you do if you won a 1.5 billion dollar lottery?

Rosemary Link, an Independent Living resident, would stay right where she is because what she has at Luther Manor, to her, is priceless.

Rosemary was overheard telling her friends that she wouldn’t leave Luther Manor if she won last fall’s Mega Millions lottery because she enjoys her life and friends here so much. She was willing to share about her experiences in a video, explaining how she chose Luther Manor to live based on the excellent care she observed when visiting friends who lived here.

Rosemary shared in the video, “Every time it seems that I have a need, Luther Manor is able to fulfill it.” She enjoys the amenities available, such as the Manor Mart, the on-site Park Bank, and the Take Thyme Cafe, as well as all the friendly staff and the social opportunities. In fact, she met her close friend, Donna Woleben, here.

She ends the video with the conclusion, “I just would not leave Luther Manor. This is just the place for me.” We are so glad it is!

INVEST & REFRESH

Luther Manor continues our work to meet our goal to offer an ideal setting. Some of the many updates and innovations made in the past six months are highlighted below. Schedule a personal tour to see all of our updates! Call 414.464.3880 or email [email protected].

New furniture, including electric fireplaces, has

been installed in common areas in Independent

Living, Assisted Living, and the Welcome Center.

The deli was renovated and reopened as the Take Thyme Cafe. New offerings include gourmet coffee drinks and

upscale sandwiches.

Resident Eugene Howard donated 500 bulbs to further

enhance the landscaping. The bulbs were planted in

October by volunteers from Milwaukee Area Technical

College and staff.

BUILDING JOY THE FAITH & EDUCATION CENTER RENOVATION

Laughter and joy are part of life at Luther Manor. Conversation is abundant, games are played, friendships are forged, creativity soars and faith grows. The mission of Luther Manor – to share God’s love by enriching the lives of older adults – is found in all that we do, and in the physical spaces that surround the laughter and joy of our community.

One project central to our work is the Faith & Education Center Renovation. Extensive improvements will make the space more inviting, more accommodating, and more beautiful for residents and guests with age-related disabilities like vision and hearing.

CHALLENGE OF OPPORTUNITYIn October 2018, Luther Manor received a challenge grant from Siebert Lutheran Foundation for $40,000. While our application was pending, word got out of a possible renovation and momentum started to build, resulting in our first gift: a mason jar of change from a Terrace resident. By the end of January 2019, the challenge was met, and gifts received surpassed $80,000.

DOUBLE YOUR GIFTIn 2018, Luther Manor Foundation was blessed to be the beneficiary of $1.46 million in matured bequests. With appreciation of the importance of renovations to the Faith & Education Center, the Foundation board approved a challenge grant of 10% of estate gifts received last year. Gifts of up to $146,000 will be matched, so please make yours today.

HOW TO GIVEOnline: Visit luthermanor.org/give

Check: Please make your check payable to Luther Manor, and indicate it is for the Faith & Education Center Renovation.

Gifts of appreciated stock and pledges are also welcomed. Please contact Cherie Swenson, Executive Director of Luther Manor Foundation, at 414.831.8950 or at [email protected].

Every gift matters. To meet the Luther Manor Foundation Challenge, gifts of all sizes are needed. From $10 to $25,000 (and more!) your support makes this project possible.

A months-long process to find a new Director of Pastoral Care for Luther Manor culminated in the installation of Pastor Laura Gerstl-Beukema on the afternoon of October 17, 2018.

The call committee included four residents, an ELCA pastor, CEO & President Stephanie Chedid, and Chief Resident Experience Officer Patrick Hansen. The committee gathered feedback from other residents about spiritual needs, prayerfully created an objective to find a pastor to help reinvigorate our mission so it could truly be felt by everyone, and diligently interviewed, debated, and strategized until they found the right person to lead Luther Manor in faith.

Pastor Laura received her Bachelor’s degree from Marquette University and attended seminary at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago. She served for more than seven years as the pastor at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lansing, Michigan. She is excited to continue her ministry here; she shared, “I wanted to work at Luther Manor because of the organization’s ethics, values, and mission of sharing God’s love by enriching the lives of older adults. Luther Manor has a very strong reputation in the community as a premier senior living community, and I consider it a privilege to help provide leadership and spiritual care in such a great organization.”

Previous life experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant in senior living

communities helped assure Pastor Laura that working with older adults was part of her calling. In her words, “I loved working in a senior living community but felt God calling me to ordained ministry. Coming to Luther Manor as the Director of Pastoral Care enables me to fulfill both of these callings and truly feels like the perfect opportunity that my previous experience has been preparing me for. I feel very blessed to serve in this new role here at Luther Manor.”

HERE’S THE SCOOPSue Rowe is one of over 20 dedicated Ice Cream Parlor volunteers. When Sue was growing up her family owned an ice ceam shop and she worked there through high school - her talents were the perfect match for our Ice Cream Parlor! Sue shared the “scoop” about this light-hearted volunteer opportunity, “The Ice Cream Parlor is fun and the customers seem happy.”

A CONVENIENT OPPORTUNITYRose Fowlkes has gifted Luther Manor with over 360 hours of volunteer service and has been instrumental in referring Luther Manor to loved ones. She decided to volunteer after retiring from a Materials Management career. With her background, she is a great fit for cashiering in our on-site convenience store, the Little Shoppe! She enjoys the opportunity to socialize with her co-volunteer and the customers.

375+ volunteers play a vital role in creating the sense of home, community, and well-being that unifies Luther Manor. To learn about volunteer opportunities call 414.831.8964 or visit luthermanor.org/volunteer.

WALK A MILE IN HIS SHOESEd Steinhaus transports residents and Rehabilitation guests to and from their campus appointments. He really enjoys his Therapy Transport volunteer position and had no idea he has volunteered for eight years! Ed wants to keep as healthy as possible; walking is great exercise and one benefit of his volunteer service is to have the opportunity to walk indoors during the winter months. Ed also enjoys getting to know his co-volunteers as well as the residents.

TO HONOR & REMEMBERVETERANS DAY

On November 9, 2018 Luther Manor veterans and friends remembered the resident veterans who passed away during 2018. This special memorial program was attended by over 100 family members, residents and employees. CEO Stephanie Chedid introduced a special funeral pall that will be used to cover deceased resident veterans when they are taken from Luther Manor. This covering was donated by the Peace by Piece quilting group at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Glendale.

A bus load of Luther Manor veterans, spouses, and friends participated in Milwaukee’s 55th Annual Day of Honor & Parade on November 10, 2018. They enjoyed a warm bus trip down the parade route waving to hearty folks that braved the cold and wind to thank the veterans for their service. Upon returning home the bus riders were treated to a special luncheon in the Redwood Room sponsored by Luther Manor.

Learn about the ways we honor & remember our veterans every day at luthermanor.org/veterans.

“They fought for us and all our rights.

They fought through many days and nights. And though we may not know each name, we thank all veterans

just the same.” - excerpt from

Luther Manor’s mission is to “share God’s love by enriching the lives of older adults.” Below is a collection of some stories which highlight the incredible people who make our mission possible!

SNOW REMOVAL WITH A SMILEAfter a massive snowstorm, a rehabilitation patient was scheduled to be transported home. The family had already shoveled to clear the driveway. Unfortunately, a snowplow drove past, leaving a mountain of snow and made entry impossible! Family members were now at work and unable to shovel - the

patient would not be able to go home after all!

When Shaun Nummerdor, Director of Buildings, Grounds, Housekeeping, and Laundry, heard of the debacle, he was ready to help without hesitation. With a smile, Shaun drove to the home with his plow and made sure all areas were cleared for entry for a very appreciative patient and family.

ACHIEVING THE IMPOSSIBLEA skilled nursing resident had been at Luther Manor for 14 months following a stroke. He was unable to maintain balance, required assistance to stand, and the use of a mechanical lift. After hours of therapy, it was determined he had reached his maximum recovery potential.

A return home seemed impossible until Luther Manor launched a new restorative care program designed to help improve indepdendence and quality of life through continued daily activities. Enter, Restorative Aides Dori Kannady-Adams, Debra Jones, and Mildred Thompson! With their support, encouragement, and education, he was able to diligently focus and put in some very hard work. Six months later, he had improved enough to move back home - something he never thought possible!

Visit luthermanor.org/missionpossible to see more stories of our mission in action!

THANKS A MILLION!Gifts to Luther Manor Foundation surpassed $1 million in 2018! This is the result of legacy gifts from the estates of generous donors.

When residents, families and volunteers remember Luther Manor Foundation in their estate plans, it is after thoughtful consideration. Compassionate staff who provide excellent care, supportive neighbors, and others in the Luther Manor community inspire their support, often without ever knowing of the impact they have on the lives of those we serve.

This year, generous bequests were received from longtime residents who were the second and third generation in their families to call Luther Manor home. For one resident, his estate gift was his first gift to Luther Manor Foundation. One generous bequest came from the daughter of a resident who lived at Luther Manor decades ago. She remained grateful for the care he received. Another gift was from the estate of a dedicated volunteer and Friend of Luther Manor. Another was received from a newer resident grateful for the camaraderie of his neighbors and friends.

These gifts would not have been possible without people like you - residents, friends, and family members - who bring joy to the Luther Manor community central to our mission to share God’s love by enriching the lives of older adults. Thanks a million!

For information on becoming a Heritage Partner Society member with a legacy gift, please contact the Luther Manor Foundation at 414.831.8950 or [email protected].

Resident Jim Kurtz continued to enjoy the outdoors despite the snowfall this winter!

His advice for everyone is, “Slow down and enjoy the scenery. Not enough people take the time to step away and relax!” See the view he was taking in at bit.ly/LMGrounds

Skilled nursing residents used proceeds from Luther Manor’s annual Thanks and Giving Sale to purchase toys for

the children of Bethany Church. They had enough to buy enough gifts for 39 children! It is wonderful to be able to spread Christmas cheer with others.

Happy Year of the Pig! Assisted Living residents celebrated the Chinese New Year with fun facts, trivia, making &

“Ho ho ho and Merry Christmas,” said Santa and Mrs. Claus! Independent living residents Rusty Tym and Sharon Novak-Tym embodied the famous couple to the

delight of other residents and very special guests on December 1, 2018.

Andrew Gray, one of our University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Artists in Residence (SAIR), talked with resident Ed Burhop after leading a Frank Sinatra jazz concert with a friend. As a SAIR,

Andrew lives at Luther Manor in exchange for providing workshops for residents.

Independent Living residents including Barb Lohr and Inga Harwick volunteered to sort, check expiration dates, count, and pack the more than 150 non-perishable items collected during Luther Manor’s

annual food drive. The items were donated to Tosa Cares.

Residents across Luther Manor’s care continuum performed a beautiful Christmas pageant on December 19, 2018 complete with scripture readings, solos, handbell

choir performances, and more.
