The first antecedent of A. C. Davis High School was established in 1890 in a building now occupied by the administration staff at Fourth Avenue and A Street with an initial enrollment of 13 students. North Yakima High School, as it was called, offered one course each to the ninth, tenth and eleventh grade pupils. The first class graduated in 1895.
By 1896 it was necessary to find larger quarters for the school that had grown to an enrollment of 40, and a move was made to the Central Building. The total enrollment had increased to 91 and the first four-year class of seven students was graduated in 1901.
Anticipating the growth of the community, the board of education had purchased a three and one-half acre tract west of town in the early 1900’s and it is on this site that the present A. C. Davis High School stands. Yakima High School was completed and occupied in 1908 with a growth capacity for 690 pupils.
Acreage was purchased in 1917 for an athletic field, now Davis Field; in 1919 two floors of the Sixth Avenue structure were added, along with the gymnasium; in 1923 shops for woodworking and auto mechanics were built; and in 1927 a room was added for classes in music and dramatics
During the depression of the 1930’s, the enrollment jumped to almost 1,700. A third floor and the present auditorium were added in 1937. Vocational education received special emphasis in 1949 with the acquisition of classrooms and equipment for training in industrial courses
The fifties saw reorganization in the high school system for Yakima with the addition of another high school and the renaming of old Yakima High. A decision was made to honor a man who had come to Yakima in 1909 as a teacher, became the
principal of North Yakima High School and served as superintendent of the entire school system from 1913 to 1947.
When further revisions and additions became necessary in 1965, it was decided that a completely new school should be designed for construction on the same site. The first stage was completed in 1967, the second in 1972, and the final stages in 1976, giving the old site a completely new and modern look.
There was extensive remodeling of the science facilities beginning in 1996. Phase I of the building plan, was completed in August 1995 and phase II, completed in 1996, included remodeling seven science rooms. Twelve portables were installed on campus in the 1996-97 school years.
Renovation and construction of the current Davis began October, 2012. A new building was erected across the street (7th Avenue) from the original Davis Campus and the road was permanently closed. A new commons/cafeteria area was built where the administration building once stood. C building was torn down and a new building that houses administration, library and classrooms was built. B & D buildings were renovated along with the old gymnasium. A new state of the art gymnasium was built with updated locker rooms, fitness labs and team rooms. The completion of construction took place in 2015 with a growth capacity of 2,400 students.
The years that have spanned the growth of Yakima’s original high school have seen many changes in location, physical appearance and educational approach, but always the foremost consideration has been the preparation of the student for a successful role in society.

“Kristy and I are proud to have provided a small part in helping to ensure the infrastructure for our Yakima students by supporting a successful Bond campaign which has resulted in two new high
school facilities (Eisenhower and Stanton) and the stunning remodel of Davis, formally Yakima High, the cornerstone of our educational community. The whole Yakima community can take pride that
they rallied around our children to establish this wonderful foundation upon which we can address the community’s educational needs. Bricks and mortar do not ensure a successful educational
environment, but without it the growth is inhibited and diminishes our community’s opportunities to attract the brightest and the best.”
Paul Larson (and Kristy), Bond Committee Co-Chairs
