Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu greetings to friends andfamily of Nelson Central School.

The earthquake on Saturday was enough for us all toreflect on our personal and institutional readiness to copewith a disaster. Our school has two major preparednessplans one for Civil Defence type emergencies seewww.nelsoncentral.school.nz/files/ncs%20civil%20defense%20procedures%20.pdfand another for aninfluenza pandemic see short form atwww.nelsoncentral.school.nz/files/ncs%20pandemic%20planning%202.pdfand full documentation atwww.nelsoncentral.school.nz/files/ncs%20pandemic%20planning.pdf.

None of us really knows how good our planning is until weare tested and we need to continually reflect on thearrangements we have made. According to one websitethere are four components of preparedness: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. Mitigation isanything done to lessen long-term damage to people andproperty. Preparedness itself is any action taken before adisaster that would make for a better response. Theresponse is what is done immediately before, during, orimmediately after a disaster to minimize damages.Recovery is short-term action taken to bring activitiesback to a manageable standard as well as long-term action

Student writingThroughout the year children are taught and they practice awide range of types of writing. This week Room 6 hasbeen practicing diary writing. Here are two examples oftheir work.

My fun weekend! It was a hot afternoon after school. Josie, Isi, Stella, Joshand I went home to get dressed into our togs to go to thewave pool. As soon as we got home we ran into our

bedroom (because we sleep in the same room) and grabbedour togs to get changed. You ready? dad asked. Yes!we all said at the same time.

We got into the car and dad drove us to the wave pool inRichmond. We saw Josies car there already. Stella, Joshand I ran into the pool entrance. The floor was as slipperyas a snake and the pools were filled with people. Josiewalked past and we power walked to the wave pool. Thewater was freezing. Beep, Beep, Beep! the wavesstarted. Stella, Josh, Isi, Josie and I went to the shallowend and the waves bashed against us. After the waves hadstopped we went to the spa. This is so warm! Josie said.

A few hours later we went back to our house and gotchanged because we were gong to Josies house for dinner. We brought popcorn and a bottle of wine. Sacha made

    macaroni cheese and boiled broccoli.

After dinner we went on the trampoline.

A few hours later we drove home.On Sunday at four oclock we went to Step uped! We gotmedium popcorn and a large pump (water).

It was about dancing. An hour later we went back to home.I hope we can watch another movie again. (Mia, Room 6)

San FranciscoOn Saturday I went to ballet we learnt a new dance itscalled San Francisco. Its funny because San Francisco is aplace! After that dad took me and my brother to RiversidePool. First me and Sam (my brother) were playing a gameto see whose board could go the farthest? and I won!

On Sunday it was Fathers Day. I made ginger bread men.My sister and my brother made chocolate cake it wasyummy. Then I fell asleep on the sofa! (Charlotte , Room 6)

Ministry of Health Swineflu Update - Protectingyourself and othersSaturdays earthquake has temporarily relegated swineflu tosecond place but lets not forget about it all together sinceinfluenza can be a very serious illness. The Ministry ofHealth updates remind us that the main measures to protect

    yourself and others are:

Know the symptoms of influenza, which can

include a high fever, headache, cough, sore throat, tiredness and generally aching all over.

Phone for medical advice quickly (call your GP orHealthline on 0800 611 116) if you have influenza-like symptoms, including consideration of whetheryou need antiviral medicine treatment. Antiviralmedication may lessen the severity and length ofyour illness, but is best started within the first 48hours. Antiviral medication is currently availablefree of charge for people who are prescribed it forinfluenza treatment.

Seeking early medical advice is especially

important for women who are pregnant, severelyoverweight people and those with underlyingmedical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart and lung disease and other conditionsincluding autoimmune diseases.

Wash and dry hands frequently, cover coughs andsneezes and stay home if you are sick.

The Ministry of Health advises that the seasonal influenzavaccination programme is now winding down. Over 1.045million doses of seasonal influenza vaccine a record for

continued from page 1.volume were distributed this year. But lets notdismiss it too soon!Subsidised vaccine remains available for eligiblepersons, with two brands on offer - Intanza (approvedfor those 18 to 59 years old) and Vaxigrip (for all ages). However, uptake has slowed markedly in recent weeks. This is expected given that the subsidised vaccine hasnow been available for six months and we are now wellthrough the normal flu season.

at the Olympics. I go to the track most weekends, and in the season I sometimesspend 2 hours day training really hard. I have to travel to other places to race. At

the South Islands in Dunedin this year I came first and at the Nationals in Auckland I

    was 7th.

My mum and dad help me as much as they can, but going to other places costs a lot of money. Ive been invited to

go to a special Training Development camp in Rotorua in September and the man said I was probably the onlySouth Island boy who would be asked. It would be fun and Id learn lots about how to race better. I would spendthe Aim High money on going to Rotorua and learning new skills. Then Ill get better and better, and in a few

years Ill be good enough to go to the Worlds and the Olympics.
