PRIMARY STUDENT VISITS

As part of our transition program, each year the college invites

primary school students from the local area to come up to Newcomb

Secondary College and participate in some fun activities in a

secondary school setting. Over the last two weeks we have hosted

approximately 450 Grade 5 & 6 students from East Geelong, Tate St,

Newcomb Park, Whittington, Moolap and Leopold primary schools.

The students participated in a broad range of activities including

technology, science, the arts and physical education. They were able

to work with experienced secondary school teachers and make use

of our college’s excellent specialist facilities for these learning areas.

The excitement the students expressed and their enthusiasm for the

activities presented was rewarding for all involved in the program.

Each student left the college with a stronger understanding of the

programs on offer at Newcomb Secondary College, an invitation to

our open night, information on PTech, a scholarship application and

a Newcomb Secondary College pen.

A big thank you to Mr Klingberg our transition coordinator and the

team of teachers who volunteered their time to be part of this

program.

Did you know that Geelong is one of the top five growth areas in Victoria and that Geelong's population growth rate is

forecast to increase substantially over the next 20 years? (Skilling the Bay - Geelong Regional Labour Market - a snapshot) What will this mean for

employment in the future for our young people?

Our PTech project is a collaborative partnership between education and industry and is about supporting a pathway for

our students to achieve a qualification that strengthens their employment

prospects.

Newcomb Secondary College is fortunate to have

Barwon Health as one of it's PTech industry

partners. Barwon Health offers a diverse range of

employment opportunities in such fields as Nursing,

Allied Health, ICT, Business, Aged Care, Laboratory

Technology and Community Services to name a few.

Recently members of the PTech Project team toured Barwon Health's

University Hospital (formerly Geelong Hospital) with a view to organising a

visit for all Year 9 students to see first hand what future employment pathways

may look like at Barwon Health. Members of the team were shown a vast

range of job pathways that were both diverse and exciting - including a visit to

the Training and Simulation Ward.

This proposed Year 9 visit to Barwon Health is an exciting opportunity for our students to experience the world of working

in the Health Industry and it will give our students the opportunity to consider a career in health as they move towards their

course selection process later on in the year.

HEAD LICE We have had a number of Head Lice cases recently.

Please make sure you check hair regularly and if so treat hair thoroughly before returning to school.

Be alert to symptoms and signs of measles

Measles usually begins with a fever, sore throat, red eyes and a cough. A rash typically develops around

three to seven days after the first symptoms, generally starting on the face and then spreading to the

rest of the body.

Children who are not immunised against measles can be immunised through their usual vaccine

provider such as their general practitioner (GP) or the local council immunisation service. From 1 January

2016, all states and territories can provide free catch-up vaccines - including the Measles-Mumps-

Rubella (MMR) vaccine - for all children up to and including 19 years of age.

new ’QR Code’. By scanning this code with your smart phone you will directed to view

the digital version of the college newsletter, in all of its clear, bright glory!

The phone automatically scans the code.

On some readers, you have to press a button to

snap a picture, not unlike the button on your

smartphone camera.

3. If necessary, press the button.
