New Year – New Look
Millarville Community School 130 Millarville Road
403-938-7832 http://millarville.fsd38.ab.ca
Principal’s Message
Welcome back to another exciting year here at Millarville Community School. We hope you all had a fantastic and restful summer. This year I am excited to have three new staff members to introduce to our families. Mr. Matthew Hanson comes to us with 5 years teaching junior and high school humanities in northern Alberta and will be teaching our junior high humanities courses. Mrs. Brooke Sillers comes to use with over 13 years of experience teaching math and physical education in Saskatchewan and will be taking over our physical education program. Mrs. Twila Collyer (not new to many) will be a new educational assistant in our kindergarten classroom. Please help welcome these new members of our MCS Staff at the upcoming meet the teacher night. Please note that due to the new Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) our Blue News is being printed for the first publication this year. As the FSD technology and legal teams work together to ensure our compliance, the newsletter will be posted onto our school website every two weeks rather than being directly emailed. When a strategy is in place, emailed newsletters will resume in addition to posting on our school website. Paper copies will always be available in the office if you prefer. I’m looking forward to a great year! As always, my door is open if you need anything. Feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Sincerely, Glenn Gibson

Millarville Saddle Sores 4-H Light Horse Club The Millarville Saddle Sores 4-H Club is looking for new members. This fun and family-oriented organization is for youth (ages 7 to 20) with a passion for horses. Focussing on the 4-H motto, “learn to do by doing,” the club develops life skills, team building, goal setting and leadership skills through monthly youth-run meetings, record keeping, public speaking, community services, riding instruction and other horse events. The club meets once a month on Friday evenings at the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society, and has two or more rides each month. Instruction focuses on basic western horsemanship, and we are excited to have a new instructor, Lachlan Bell. We have 3 or more clinics each year, chosen by the kids. Past clinics include bomb-proofing, English, cowboy challenge/trail, flags and polocrosse. Other activities include gymkhanas, English, showmanship, trail, and game nights. Participants must provide a horse and transport. The 4-H program also offers camps, district and regional events, travel, and award opportunities and scholarships, making it one of Alberta’s best youth organizations. The 2014-2015 club year kicks off in early October. For more information, contact Marilyn Collard at (403) 256-1902 or [email protected].

Awesome News from around the School The Kinders are excited to be in the big room and being with their classmates in the big school! They are finding out about how people change over time and also noticing the changes in the season. This is Who we are! Grade 1s are investigating how print and text in our environment gives us information. There are lots of signs and labels to read out there! Their unit is under the PYP theme of How we organize ourselves. Grade 2s are inquirying into how insects interact with their environment. They have a lot of wonderful questions to research. They are going to the zoo to a special “bug” program on September 23rd. Grade 3s are looking into how humans respond to our constantly changing planets. There are many types of rocks and geological forms in their classroom too! This inquiry is under the PYP theme How the world works. Grade 4s are once again spearheading the recycling program at MCS. They will host the assembly this week to give us some information about how to make this program a success. This relates to their science topic, Waste in our World, and connects to the PYP theme Sharing the planet. Grade 5s are looking into special relationships with a novel study of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulaine. This PYP unit of Who we are is a wonderful way to explore our own relationships and our identities as Canadians. Grade 6s are busy with their own novel study, Hatchet. Their science topic of Trees and Forests will see them exploring the wild woods of Millarville in the near future. Grade 7s are really excited to have Mrs. Sillers as their homeroom teacher! They have been focusing on the Learner Profile attributes and have made some very personal posters. Grade 8s think their homeroom teacher, Mr. Hanson, is really awesome! They are excited to begin inquiring into The Renaissance in Humanities.
