postul nu este abstinenţa faţă

de hrană, ci fuga faţă de păcat.

A nu vedea în post decât o

privare de mâncare înseamnă a

-i face o mare nedreptate. Dacă

voi postiţi, arătaţi-o prin

faptele voastre! Care să fie

aceste fapte, mă veţi întreba?

Dacă veţi vedea un sărac, aveţi

milă de el; dacă-l vedeţi pe

vrăjmaşul vostru, împăcaţi-vă

cu el; dacă prietenul vostru

săvârşeşte o faptă demnă de

laudă, nu îi purtaţi deloc in-

vidie; dacă ochii voştri văd o

femeie frumoasă, nu rămâneţi

prizonieri acestei privelişti. Nu

doar gura noastră trebuie să

postească, ci şi ochii noştri,

Sunt suficiente postul

trupesc şi semnele exterioare

ale pocăinţei? Nu. Trebuie să

fie schimbată viaţa. Vreţi o

dovadă cu privinţă la aceasta?

Ascultaţi ceea ce spune

prorocul Iona. După ce

vorbeşte despre mânia divină

şi postul ninivitenilor, el ne

învaţă că Dumnezeu i-a iertat

şi ne spune şi motivul.

Dumnezeu a văzut faptele lor

(Iona 3, 10), zice el.

T HE FEASTS OF THE WINTER

Christ is born! Glorify Him!

Beloved in Christ,

The joyous celebration of the

Nativity of Christ is fast ap-

proaching, to be followed by the

glorious feast of Holy Theophany

12 days later. Many of us do not

realize that centuries ago these

two feasts were celebrated on the

same day, January 6th. Let us

look at the history behind the

separation of the two feasts.

First of all, we must remem-

ber that Christianity was born

into a pagan world. Even the first

Christians in the Holy Land

could not escape this reality since

they were occupied by

“Glory to God in the high-

est, and on earth peace to

people of good will! “

Regarding these two events, the early

Church merged them into one feast that cel-

ebrated the various manifestations of Christ

to the world: His birth in the flesh as the

God -man; His revelation as God through the

visitation of the Magi, who worshipped Him

and offered Him gifts accordingly; and final-

ly, His manifestation to the world as the Son

of God along with the Father and Holy Spirit

during Theophany, thus manifesting the Ho-

ly Trinity to the world.

As mentioned above, January 6th was the

day assigned to this great feast of the Lord.

During Roman pagan times, December

25th was the celebration of the winter sol-

stice, the shortest day of the year after which

hours of sunlight would begin increasing.

The focus of the feast was worship of the sun

god, Sol Invictus (the Unconquerable Sun).

This pagan holiday was notorious for de-

bauchery and wild celebration. Unfortunate-

ly, the influence of pagan society continually

affected many Christians of the time. They

would get caught up in the revelry of the hol-

iday which was truly unfitting for Chris-

tians, especially in light of their spiritual

preparation for the upcoming feast of the

Lord’s birth and epiphany 12 days later.

In the 4th century through an act of great

wisdom, when Christianity become a free re-

ligion in the Roman Empire, the Church sep-

arated the celebration of the Nativity of

Christ and the visit of the Magi from the cel-

ebration of His Baptism and Epiphany to the

world, creating a new feast to focus on His

birth and related events.

This new feast of the Nativity of Christ

was superimposed onto the pagan feast of

the sun on December 25th. This clever ma-

neuver created a correct focus on worship-

ping Christ the Sun of Righteousness, the

true Light of the world, instead of the pagan

god of the sun. The troparion, or central

hymn of the Nativity, clearly reveals the cor-

rect focus for the newly formed feast of De-

cember 25th: “Thy Nativity, O Christ our

God, has shone upon the world with the light

of knowledge; for thereby they who adored

the stars through a star were taught to wor-

ship Thee, the sun of righteousness, and to

know Thee, the Dayspring from on high. O

Lord, glory to Thee.”

Eventually, a 40-day fast period became

the norm in the preparation for the feast of

the Nativity of Christ; when the faithful pre-

pare themselves (by fasting, prayer & good

deeds) to receive Christ through Holy Sacra-

ments (Confession & Communion) and in

their homes.

For many centuries, Orthodox Chris-

tians have been celebrating the Nativity of

our Lord on December 25th. On the eighth

day after the Lord’s birth, January 1st, His

circumcision and naming are celebrated,

along with the memory of St. Basil the

Great which was added after his canoniza-

tion. Then on January 6th the Church ad-

vances to the Lord’s baptism in the Jordan

and manifestation as God in the flesh, along

with the Father and Holy Spirit. It should be

noted that in keeping with historical accura-

cy, on the 40th day after the Lord’s birth,

February 2nd, the feast of the Meeting (or

Presentation) of Christ in the temple is cele-

brated. With this feast we close the entire

Nativity related period, and in most years

the beginning of the Triodion (the 10 weeks

preparation for Easter) promptly follows.

I hope that I have enlightened you with

this interesting history of the feasts of the

Nativity and Theophany of Christ. In addi-

tion, hopefully you can appreciate even

more, why the Orthodox Church holds that

the true and correct celebration of the Lord’s

Nativity begins on December 25th and culmi-

nates on the feast of Theophany, January

6th, the climax of this holy season.

May you all have a blessed feast of both

the Nativity and Theophany of our Lord!

lor cernită? Nimic din toate acestea,

pentru că el nici măcar nu le pomeneşte.

În schimb, prorocul zice: „Toţi s-au întors

din căile lor cele rele. Şi I-a părut rău

Domnului de prezicerile de rău pe care li

le făcuse şi nu le-a împlinit”. Vedeţi, nu

postul i-a smuls din calea pieirii,

ci schimbarea vieţii lor a potolit mânia

Domnului şi El le-a fost astfel binevoitor.

Dacă eu vă spun aceste lucruri, nu o fac

ca să dispreţuiţi postul, ci dimpotrivă, ca

să-l preţuiţi mai mult.

Ceea ce ne face evident postul nu este

abstinenţa faţă de hrană, ci fuga faţă de

prin faptele voastre! Care să fie aceste

P OSTUL SE TINE ÎN ASCUNS, DAR SE VĂDEșTE PRIN

SCHIMBAREA VIETII

Nu doar gura noastră trebuie să

postească, ci şi ochii noştri, urechile

noastre, picioarele, mâinile noastre, tot

trupul nostru. Mâinile noastre să

postească, adică ele să fie curate de

orice furt, de orice folos obţinut

necuvenit şi de orice avariţie.

Picioarele noastre să postească, adică

să se abţină de la alergarea spre

spectacole neîngăduite. Ochii noştri să

postească, adică să se obişnuiască ca

niciodată să nu arunce priviri

neruşinoase, ca niciodată să nu fie

ţintuiţi în mod curios asupra celor

indecente şi periculoase… De

asemenea, urechile să postească, iar

postul lor constă în a nu asculta bârfe,

nici calomnii. „Să nu iei aminte la zvon

deşert; să nu te uneşti cu cel nedrept,

ca să fii martor mincinos”, spune

Scriptura (Ieşire 23, 1). Gura să

postească abţinându-se de la orice

cuvânt imoral şi nedrept. La ce bun să

ne înfrânăm de la carnea păsărilor şi a

peştilor, dacă noi sfâşiem, dacă noi

devorăm pe fraţii noştri?

D E CE APRINDEM LUMÂNAREA ŞI CANDELA?

De ce, totuşi, ardem lumânări, de ce

ardem candela? Pentru că vrem să

aducem jertfă, adică ne lipsim de ceva,

pentru Dumnezeu. Jertfa noastră este

bine primită doar dacă înţelegem ce este

jertfa; iar dacă nu înţelegem, atunci

fumul jertfei noastre, dacă putem să ne

exprimăm aşa, nu se urcă la ceruri,

ci se răspândeşte.
