Illinois’ 8501 offers a cost effectivesolution for those who need accurate,uncomplicated measurement of oxygentransmission rates (OTR) throughpermeable films.
The 8501 features state of the artelectronics that allow the user to initializetest or calibrate with the touch of abutton. Scaleable analog outputs allowthe user flexibility when connecting to achart recorder.
A standard RS232 port enables datalogging capabilities. The unique LIFEparameter indicates when the internaloxygen sensor needs to be replaced.
Illinois’ 8501 combines trace oxygensensitivity, rugged dependability, andexceptional ease of use in a compact,single chamber, precision oxygenpermeation analyzer.
The 8501 utilises our proprietary sensorto detect oxygen transmission ratesthrough flat film barriers. Flat filmsamples are clamped in a diffusionchamber. Pure oxygen (99.9%) is thenintroduced into the upper half of thechamber while an oxygen free carrier gasflows through the lower half. Molecules ofoxygen diffusing through the film into thelower chamber are conveyed to thesensor by the carrier gas.

The proprietary sensor design of the8501 allows for extremely fast, accurateresults. In a head-to-head comparisonbetween the 8501 and its competitors,the 8501 was proven to be up to 4 timesfaster.
With a purge time of only 30 minutes andtest times as short as 20 minutes, the8501 is a must for high volumeproduction facilities.
With 2 button operation, the 8501 issimple to operate and requires littleor no special operator training. Theunit is easily calibrated to a certifiedNAMAS / N.I.S.T. traceablecalibration gas. This makes the testresults traceable to current NAMAS/ N.I.S.T. standards.

Although the 8501 is a stand-aloneinstrument, an RS232 port is provided forconnection to a PC. Supplied softwareallows users a graphical interface fordisplay, storage, and printout of the data.
The stored data can also be exported toa spreadsheet program such as Excel®or Lotus®. These programs allow you tograph and print the data or incorporate itinto analysis reports for customers ormanagement.

The data plot below illustrates that a testfilm of 340cc/100in2/day and a test run of60 minutes yields only about8cc/100in2/day (2.3%) increase. This iscompared to the 332cc/100in2/day sensedwithin the first 20 minutes.
Many applications will find that a shorter20 minute test routine will consistentlyproduce reliable and adequate results.
