The past month has been a busy one with lots of events and news to report…

In early March, I attended a seminar delivered by Todd Pallett of Financial Partners Hong Kong and was surprised to learn that documents pertaining to wills and the guardianship of our son in the event of tragedy, (materials that took forever to sort out prior to leaving Australia), have little or no relevance in Macau. Success Stories…

Caring for the Babies Fran Thomas

Cradle of Hope At this time of year when the ILCM is making a concerted appeal for funds from either companies or individuals, to ensure we can support our charities in the year ahead, it is worth highlighting much of the help we give the Macau community is the skill and the time of many of our members. Members volunteer their time to help at the different homes for abandoned babies, children and the elderly.

For some it is a weekly visit for an hour a week, for others like Louise D’Aire it has been a much bigger commitment as she has assisted in creating training packages for the staff at the home for abandoned babies. The Director and staff of the home are grateful and astounded by her generous contribution of time and commitment.

Marjory from Cradle of Hope is again seeking volunteers to help as the number of abandoned babies is increasing and the ability to get staff is reducing. Volunteering your time or skills can be around your own timetable.

For further information, please contact Fran Thomas 66841497 or [email protected]

Sabrina and Louise with the little babies…

The Good Shepherd Centre Last month we received a request from Sr Juliana at the Good Shepherd Centre in Macau concerning a mother with two little boys, aged 3 and 4, who had sought refuge at the Centre.

The mother is in the process of getting a divorce from her husband in Hong Kong and even though

she is a Macau ID holder, she cannot get Macau IDs for the boys until the divorce proceedings are over and she gets custody of the boys. She herself is under psychiatric care because of many traumatic experiences and her 4 year old has not developed properly emotionally because of the family violence he has witnessed.

The mother recently took the 3 year old for his health check-up and the doctor told her the child has a serious problem and needed an operation. The boy cannot get free medical care in the government hospital because he is not a resident. The doctor quoted the cost of the operation at MOP 20,000 and Sr Juliana asked if we could make a donation towards the cost. The ILCM donated the full amount in March.

Everything went smoothly and he was out of the hospital two days later, the operation costing only MOP 8,897. The mother is now much more relaxed and is extremely grateful for all the help and support she received. It was agreed that Sr Juliana use the surplus money to buy office furniture for the new room she plans to set up for her Non-Violent Communication (NVC) project. T he 5th Macao United Cup International Ballroom Dancing Championship World Dance Ranking Award, organized by ILCM member Samantha Chiang and her husband, was held at Fisherman’s Wharf.

The evening was a huge success where we watched competitors from America, Asia and Europe compete for world titles. Samantha and her husband run a dance studio in NAPE – United Dance Studios where many of us will be undergoing intense training in preparation for the ball.

Lastly, Easter… and how Macau has changed in the past twelve months. Last year we had one option for Easter Bunnies and Hot Cross Buns. This year every supermarket we went to had a range of Easter eggs, from small to large, and something to suit the most discerning of palates.

The Mansfield family, despite the weather, enjoyed Easter in Macau with new and old friends at a couple of BBQ’s and far too many chocolates!

I hope to see you at one of the April ILCM functions.

A t 3pm on the last Friday of each month the crèche, run by the Missionaries of Charity in the north of Macau, is the venue for a birthday bash.

All members of ILCM are invited to the celebration and I would encourage you to come along as it is fun and very heart-warming to share this happy time with two to four year olds from some of the poorest families in Macau.

Each child who has had a birthday during the previous month receives a birthday hat, a medallion to hang around his/her neck and a present.

The birthday tots will be seated in places of honour at the top table and be given the first taste of the birthday cake, supplied each month by a member of the ILCM.

The pleasurable duties of ILCM members present are:

• to sing along to the songs, complete with appropriate gestures, with all the children and the nuns;

• give out hats and presents to these small children who, usually, promptly burst into tears at the sight of an unfamiliar, foreign-looking face;

• then give out cake and drinks and assist with feeding, which has a much more positive reception as by this time the children are used to us and want to interact with us.

After all this it's free time to play with the children as you like and chat with the Sisters of Charity.

This is, basically, the format of each month's birthday party and this month was fairly typical. This month's birthday cake was kindly supplied by Ana Maria Wong. We would like more ILCM members to come along to such an enjoyable afternoon. The formal part of the celebration takes only around a half an hour but you may stay longer if you wish.

If anyone is interested please don't hesitate to contact a member of the Community Services team to arrange a lift or for directions to find the venue.

Portuguese first arrived Macau, they found themselves getting married to the local men. As good wives as they were, they wanted to cook for their husbands; therefore, they would cook what they knew as Portuguese food but with only what they could find here… Chinese ingredients and that is how the term Macanese came about.

They like to call the food fusion, and it truly is, as it has influence from China, Malaysia and India. Our luncheon menu consisted of:

• Minchi, which is pork mince, onions, soy sauce and potatoes.

• Capela, also known as meatloaf

• Vaca Estufada is beef stew with potatoes

• Roast Lamb

• Fried Rice Noodles, which they call Lacassa

For dessert, we had a beautiful coconut gelatin, mango pudding and the well-known marble cake.

We would like to thank Sonia for organizing such a beautiful lunch and it was great to have some of our founding members joining us. A fun day had by all.

Owned and run by ILCM member Sonia Palmer, the restaurant has been in her family for 18 years and Sonia gets all her inspiration and recipes from her 92-year-old mother.

During our lunch, Sonia gave us an insight into what a Macanese person is. For example, when the

Xian

X ian is the ancient capital of China and has an incredible history. A wander through the Shaanxi Provincial Museum is a walk through time with incredible pottery

pieces, most as burial items, from 3500 years ago through to early Ching Dynasty 200 years ago.

Most people visit Xian to see the Terracotta Warriors and indeed they exceeded all my expectations. The Terracotta Warriors are a life-sized army of 7,000 figures built to defend Emperor QinShiHuang and accompany him into the afterlife. There are soldiers of different rank; standing and kneeling archers; and horses and chariots in battle formation. The detail in the figures is fantastic, with each face unique, archaeologists have not only been able to discover much about the art of war 2,200 years ago, but also the different ethnic groups in the Emperor’s army in Xian at that time. Over ten different weapons have been identified and when uncovered, they were shiny and very sharp, as if only buried recently. Testing has shown that the weapons were coated in a chromium compound – a technique not discovered by the Germans until 1937 and the Americans in 1950 and yet the Chinese knew how to do it 2000 years earlier!

Xian still has i8ts city walls – built during the Tang and Ming Dynasties and it is possible to cycle around the top of the wall in a complete circuit (13.7km). A less energetic option is an electric cart.

Xian is famous for its dumplings and there are many restaurants where you can experience this delicious option. There is also a large Muslim quarter and the area’s dining options reflect this.

Xian is an exciting ancient and modern city. The only difficulty is that you cannot fly direct from Macau. However, there are flights from Zhuhai Airport that is located just 45 minutes in a taxi from the Gongbei border (cost 130 yuan).

We visited Xian as part of a longer customised tour that we booked through Linda at Odyssey Tours. See www.chinaodysseytours.com.

After a short seven months in Macau, we are back in Sydney. We had a fabulous time and packed in as

much travel as possible. I enjoyed being a member of ICLM and will visit when I come up for holidays.

pain are common It is very important to call your healthcare provider BEFORE you go to see them if you have been in contact with live birds and suspect avian flu

Diagnosis • Your Doctor will ask for a sputum specimen and

- Lyn Davis, NZRN HOPE Medical Macau www.hopemacau.com

S everal people have asked recently for information about Avian or Bird Flu (H5N1) since the reporting of a death in Guangzhou of a person who contracted the disease.

While there seems to be no threat in Macau at present, it is always good to review one’s practices and information.

What is it? A contagious disease that normally affects birds but in recent years has spread to humans.

Prevention • Avoid places where birds are raised, live, sold or

slaughtered

• Always keep raw meat separate from cooked or ready to eat foods

• Always wash your hands after handling poultry (as you should with all meat)

• Always wash food preparation surfaces after use

• Wash your eggs in warm soapy water when you bring them home and before storing

• Ensure that all poultry is well cooked before eating, including eggs

Breast Cancer Prevention

Demonstration & Lecture Breast self-examination to detect breast changes early is vital. All women of all ages should do this exam weekly. Do you know how?

Lyn Davis, a New Zealand trained nurse from Hope Medical Clinic, will give a lecture and demonstration on the how and why, and what to look for.

your reservation, or cancel too late, the

venue will still charge us and we must ask you to pay for your

unused spot.

ASAP.

Selling items and sales pitches Please respect our policies and relationships with sponsors… and please do not ask to sell items during coffee mornings. These mornings are strictly social and asking for special favors puts everyone in an embarrassing position.

If you would like to sell items for charity, promote your business, or if you have ideas and time to organize activities that might interest members or benefit charity, please let us know and we will see how we can make it happen.

Please contact a committee member or email [email protected].
