Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise Page | 1 President Greg’s Sword of Destiny fell upon my shoulder last Tuesday when he anointed me to represent him while still absent with work commitments. Hey, and what at blast this meeting was. Our special guest speaker was the Club’s original Wild Child, Sandy Sumsion. Sandy and husband Craig were stalwarts of our club before a business opportunity took them off to Roxby Downs. Roxby and surrounds had no Rotary presence, so suffering from Rotary withdrawal symptoms, Sandy decided to create a club that also incorporated Woomera and Andamooka. There is no such concept as the Tyranny of Distance in the Bush and a trip from one edge of the boundary to the other is around 140 km and that’s just one way. If you thought Sandy was wild in our club then it doesn’t take much imagination to guess what she got up to as inaugural president of Roxby Districts. Mari and I also had the pleasure of attending her inaugural dinner and quickly picked up that FUN would be big on the Club’s agenda. Apart from the pub, Andamooka may not have too many salubrious venues to hold functions, but it does have oodles of space underground. International visitors and city folk alike can take away some treasured memories when attending one of Roxby Districts functions held at Andamooka. The photo below shows Marie Dorrington DG for District 9500 attending one such meeting. We really enjoyed Sandy’s anecdotes, her presentation on her club’s history and its current activities. I can recommend attending one of their Change Over Dinners and even better if you can arrive a day or two ahead of the function. Fines for this week raised $23.30.

President Greg’s Sword of Destiny fell upon my shoulder last Tuesday when he anointed me to

represent him while still absent with work commitments. Hey, and what at blast this meeting was.

Our special guest speaker was the Club’s original Wild Child, Sandy Sumsion. Sandy and husband

Craig were stalwarts of our club before a business opportunity took them off to Roxby Downs.

Roxby and surrounds had no Rotary presence, so suffering from Rotary withdrawal symptoms,

Sandy decided to create a club that also incorporated Woomera and Andamooka. There is no such

concept as the Tyranny of Distance in the Bush and a trip from one edge of the boundary to the

other is around 140 km and that’s just one way.

If you thought Sandy was wild in our club then it doesn’t take much imagination to guess what she

got up to as inaugural president of Roxby Districts. Mari and I also had the pleasure of attending

her inaugural dinner and quickly picked up that FUN would be big on the Club’s agenda.

Apart from the pub, Andamooka may not have too many salubrious venues to hold functions, but it

does have oodles of space underground. International visitors and city folk alike can take away

some treasured memories when attending one of Roxby Districts functions held at Andamooka.

The photo below shows Marie Dorrington DG for District 9500 attending one such meeting. We

really enjoyed Sandy’s anecdotes, her presentation on her club’s history and its current activities. I

can recommend attending one of their Change Over Dinners and even better if you can arrive a

day or two ahead of the function.

Fines for this week raised $23.30.

Andamooka

If you thought that Sandy dressed up as a clown especially for her presentation to her old Club,

then think again; it was for a work seminar with Raine & Horne: WILD

Ron Burton World RI President Elect’s Luncheon

Bronny, Lindsay, Sue, Trevor and myself also attending a luncheon on Thursday, organised by the

Adelaide Club for visiting RI President Elect, Ron Burton. The venue was the Adelaide Oval and

Governor, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce (not a Rotary Governor, but the real one) and Mrs Scarce also

attended. Acknowledging the distinguished guests sometimes took as long as some of the

speeches, but never the less we were given an insight into Ron Burton and his values. My own

assessment would be ‘a down to earth academic’ and coming from Oklahoma there’s just a touch

of cowboy too. We got bang for our buck with the catering; Lindsay enjoyed his medallion of steak

so much that he decided to take much of the gravy home on his shirt.

This function also gave us a chance to catch up with old mates

such as our own Club PP Sue McKay, now of Victor Harbor.

Conference 25 – 28 April 2013

The Rotary District Conference is a great opportunity to:

Listen to great guest speakers on topical subjects

Learn more about Rotary and the clubs in our district

Catch up with old friends and make new ones

Spend time with your fellow club members in a more social setting

Get inspired to do great things!

We are very lucky that the 2013 Conference will be held relatively close by and I encourage all club members

to attend. Accommodation in the Barossa will be in great demand and short supply, so will need to be

booked quickly.

I will be booking accommodation for our club and if you would like to be included please let me know as

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of a worthy enterprise and in particular to encourage and foster

The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by every Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve

society.

The application of the ideal service by every Rotarian to their personal, business and community life.

The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

The Four Way Test of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth? Is it Fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

For good food, good fellowship And the opportunity to serve through Rotary

…we give thanks.
