78 rpm INSTRUMENTAL Sets do NOT have original albums unless indicated.

If matrix numbers are wanted for any of the items below in cases where they have been omitted,

just let me know (preferably sooner rather than later). Albums require wider boxes than those I use for records. If original albums are available and are wanted,

they will have to be shipped separately. U.S. postal charges for shipment within the U.S. are still

reasonable(media/book rate) but out of country fees will probably be around $25.00 for an empty album.

Most albums sets, both instrumental and vocal, are listed further on in this catalogue.

Born Gizella Zucca- Manoff of Polish émigrés, she began piano studies at the age of seven with Alexander Lambert, who taught at the New York College of Music. The following year her progress was so swift that she performed as soloist in the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 and subsequently studied additionally with Ferruccio Busoni and Leopold Godowsky. She was successful in Europe as well, touring as a soloist and in joint performances with Spanish violinist Juan Manén over a three-year period. As a singer she first appeared in 1914 in Lehár’s The Count of Luxembourg. She was also a prolific composer. 1517. 10” Blk. acous. Regal 9168 [41906-6E/41956-2C]. VALSE

YOLANDA MÉRÖ [pianist]. Budapest, 1887 – New York City, 1963. Yolanda Mero was born into a Jewish family in Budapest of parents Salamon Mérő and Rozalia (née Pick). She studied from the age of 8 at the National Conservatory with Augusta Rennebaum, a pupil of Franz Liszt.. Her debut was at age 15 with the Dresden Philharmonic. She then toured the world for four years. She moved to the United States in the early 1900s, first appearing in New York in 1909, with the Russian Symphony Orchestra. In the US she played concertos under the batons of Gustav Mahler, Leopold Stokowski and others. She later held a teaching post at her alma mater in Budapest. Her verve and bravura, but also her wayward approach, were noted by the press. In a review of her concert at New York's Aeolian Hall in January 1919, James Huneker wrote that "... she transformed Chopin preludes into veritable typhoons", and "... in the Barcarolle, instead of gondolas and the vows of lovers, moonlight and soft Adriatic zephyrs, we were shown a huge warship that steamed through the Grand Canal, sirens screaming, cannons booming, and a band playing a Hungarian Rhapsody

His mother, who in 1914 neglected to collect the principal of a trust fund created by her father (a Standard Oil millionaire) for her 30th birthday, shot herself in 1919. The money was, in turn, passed on to her only son, Cameron, who was a composer, author, and hockey player. He married in the 1920s. He and his wife had two children, but a very acrimonious divorce soon followed, apparently the childen ending up in Mexico through the father’s machinations. Maître FRANCIS PLANTÉ [pianist]. 1839-1934.

“Francis Planté was, after Chopin, France's most important nineteenth century pianist. He started his concert life at age seven in Paris, where Chopin was also performing, and so he heard him play. By 1850 Planté had won a First Prize from the Paris Conservatoire. He went on to befriend Rossini, through whom he was introduced to most of the important musical figures of the day, many of whom he got to know and with whom he formed lasting friendships. During the 1860s he duetted with both Saint-Saëns and Liszt, and established himself as the leading French pianist of the day. He recorded at age 89, rather past his best no doubt, in a single set of specially arranged recording sessions in his retirement villa over a few days in 1928. https://www.youtube.com/user/d60944 1235. 10” PW Eng. Lesche- tisky is mentioned as one of her teachers. Her career seems to have centered in the New York area. Reviews in the NY Times are positive. An Aeolian Hall concert review in 1917 mentioned that she “proved herself as a pianist of engaging qualities, as indeed she has before”. Of another Aeolian Hall performance, this in 1920, the reviewer advised that she “has long since ‘put away childish things’ and outlived the name of prodigy. The difficulty, which is a real one even with the greatest artists, seems to have been conquered so far as her public was concerned, by merit …”. A 1925 review of a Town Hall recital considered her as “one of the best woman pianists of the season”. Her Chopin group was admirable in its structure and its romantic idealism.” She taught for a number of years. She died after a long illness in the Jewish Hospital and Home for the Aged on 105th Street in Manhattan. This particularly effective (to my ears) performance below seems to be her sole recording.

CHARLES GILBERT SPROSS [pianist]. Poughkeepsie, NY, 1874 – 1961. Dr. Spross was a noted organist, pianist and composer. He accompanied many artists, including Anna Case throughout the U.S., Eleonora Di Cisneros, even Caruso (the first time he sang in English … Sullivan’s The Lost Chord). His songs were sung and recorded by many prominent artists of the period. I corresponded with Dr. Spross in the mid- 1950s and would ask him many questions about singers active early in the century. He knew nothing about me but finally asked if I were a concert manager. When I replied that I was a high school freshman, that apparently put an end to the informative and enjoyable correspondence!
