78 rpm INSTRUMENTAL Sets do NOT have original albums unless indicated.

If matrix numbers are needed for any of the items below in cases where they have been omitted,

just let me know (preferably sooner rather than later).

Albums require wider boxes than I use for records. If albums are available and are wanted, they

will have to be shipped separately. U.S. postal charges for shipment within the U.S. are still

reasonable (book rate) but out of country fees will probably be around $25.00 for an empty album.

ALDO FERRARESI [violinist]. Ferrara, Italia, 1902-San Remo, 1978. He began studies at the age of five at the Frescobaldi Institute of Music in Ferrara. At the age of twelve he was admitted to the Parma Conservatory as a student of Mario Corti and three years later received a degree in violin from the Accademia di Santa Cecilia. Upon a suggestion from Jan Kubelik, he was accepted as a student by Eugène Ysaÿe, who considered him one of his best pupils. He subsequently performed internationally.

The record’s labels below note that he was “the most eminent living pupil of Franz Liszt”. In addition to studying with Liszt he also spent a year preparing with Anton Rubinstein. He also composed (including two operas) and taught in England, Canada and New York. An obituary noted that he returned to New York in 1915. “After considerable financial difficulties he gave a recital in Aeolian Hall on April 3, 1916.” It would have been during this period that his odd Emerson record, below, was made, probably with the need of financial assistance in mind.

RUDOLF FUCHS [violinist]. 1908 - Glenview, IL, 1933. A pupil of Albert Vertchamp, Fuchs was originally a noted New York area ensemble player. He made his solo debut in New York’s Town Hall on Jan. 12, 1929. That evening, the uncredited NY Times reviewer noted that “correct intonation, a warm tone and considerable facility in the execution of brilliant display passages won him an enthusiastic reception”. Among his other performance venues was The White House in a concert for President Coolidge. Fuchs’ sole (two) private recordings were made on July 17, 1929. He was killed at the age of 25 in the crash of a Sikorsky sightseeing plane flying over the Chicago World’s Fair. At the time he was returning to New York from California by train from a radio engagement and decided during a stopover to see the Fair from a bird’s eye vantage. At some point between 1930 and his death he had, according to his brother, Morris (in an obituary notice), “anglicized his name” from Fuchs to Fox. LEOPOLD GODOWSKY [pianist]. Vilna, 1870-New York City, 1938. The son of a physician, Godowsky made his debut at the age of nine after only two years of formal study. His success was such that a tour of Russia and Germany was then arranged. He was heard by a wealthy German banker, who financed four years of study for Godowsky at the Berlin Hochschule following the completion of his tour. Subsequently (1884) he visited the United States, appearing in concert companies with Clara Louise Kellogg and Emmy Thursbay, as well as accompanying violinist Ovide Musin (whose only records were listed here last year). He returned to Europe in 1887 and for three years prepared further with Saint-Saëns. For the next forty years he was active inter-nationally as a pianist and teacher, and was also noted for his compositional work. In 1930 Godowsky suffered a stroke that affected his right hand, but for a period he continued writing for, and playing with, the left hand alone. He chose to end his public career following the death of his wife in 1933, although he continued writing until his death in 1938 following surgery. -from Musical America obituary.

JOSEPH HASSID [violinist]. Suwalki, Poland, 1923 – Long Grove Hospital, Epsom, England, 1950. A remarkable prodigy, Hassid (raised by his father after his mother’s death when he was ten) was strongly encouraged by most of the virtuosi of the time who heard him. He came to England in 1938 at the invitation of Carl Flesch and made his public debut at Wigmore Hall (London) on 3 April 1940. His final concert was 1 March 1941 at Queens Hall, playing the Beethoven Violin Concerto. It was apparent that he was suffering from a “severe mental disorder” which was diagnosed as “schizophrenia” and was admitted to St. Andrew’s Hospital in Northampton. After a brief period of improvement, he was “certified insane” and remained institutionalzed for the rest of his life. A lobotomy was eventually attempted but postoperative infection set in, progressing into meningitis, which led to his death. Pianist Gerald Moore commented in the Gramophone magazine (April, 1973) that Hassid was “the greatest instrumental genius I’ve ever partnered.” He made only eight issued sides, all in 1940, all extremely scarce, and all accompanied by Gerald Moore. – Wikipedia

[JULIUS] DUCI DE KEREKJARTO [violinist]. Ungarn, Hungary, 1900-Los Angeles, CA, 1962. A pupil of Hubay and referred to as a “brilliant, charismatic Hungarian violinist,” Kerekjarto made his American debut in Carnegie Hall in 1920. Writing of him shortly after that evening, his enthusiastic publicist gushed, “Such exhibitions of violinistic technique as his had been offered by no newcomer before him since the memorable debut of Jascha Heifitz. Kerekjarto is said to have everything that a violinist needs to win popular acclaim. His tones are lustrous, refined and delicate. The critics found him to have command of all the intricacies of violin technique accompanied by a tone that was at all times melting and flowing. He was particularly enthusiastically received for his feats of wonderful finger work and digital dexterity.” After such an auspicious beginning, his career seemed to have slowly waned. ANGEL REYES (CAMAJO) dir. 13th SOUND ENSEMBLE OF HAVANA. Reyes (1889-c.1941) was particularly interested in sonic experimentation. The recording below is played in quarter, eighth and sixteenth tones. Reyes’s son, also Angel, was a noted violinist. The name of the ensemble comes from composer Carrillo’s system of dividing the octave beyond the normal 12 half-steps into quarter, eighth and sixteenth tones. A clipping listing the artists’ names and instrument is attached to the envelope. This is scored for wordless soprano and five instruments and was recorded in 1930.

Born Lucy Mary Olga Agnes Hickenlooper, she studied in Paris and became the first woman to win a scholarship to the Paris Conservatory. She abandoned her career from 1900 to 1904 during an unsuccessful marriage and returned as Olga Samaroff, making her professional debut under that name with the NY Symphony in Carnegie Hall. Another career hiatus took place between 1911 and 1923 during her second marriage, this to conductor Leopold Stokowski. An arm injury in 1925 caused the ending of her full-time performing. She subsequently was involved in various musical activities, including writing and, in particular, teaching.

ALFREDO SAN MALO (ALFREDO DE SAINT MALO) [violinist]. Panama City, 1898-Austin, TX, 1984. He began serious musical studies in 1907. In 1915 the Panama government granted him a scholarship to study violin at the Paris Conservatoire. He graduated in 1919, receiving the Premier Prix de Violin. In 1926, his U.S. debut took place, where for the next three years he appeared in a number of recitals, including one in Boston, 1927, with Maurice Ravel at the piano. This included the U.S. premiere of Ravel’s 2nd Violin Sonata (Enesco having given the world premiere earlier that year). In 1929 he gave a tour of Italy and the following year returned to Panama. After years associated with the Panama National Conservatory of Music, founded in 1941, the Conservatory was closed in 1953 “by a government with no vision for the future”. Two years later, San Malo accepted a position as Professor of Violin at the University of Texas in Austin, where he remained until his death, returning to Panama quite often to give concerts. The record below is apparently his only issued solo recording. – Internet sources.

SADAH SHUCHARI [violinist]. Enfield, CT, 1908 - ? . Born Sadie Schwartz, a child of Roumanian imigrants, Shuchari made her debut at the age of 13 with the Hartford (CT) Philharmonic. She was at some point a pupil of Leopold Auer as well as Paul Kochanski and in 1927 was the winner of a Naumberg Foundation award. In 1928, she received her diploma from the Juilliard Graduate School, also that year making her recital debut at NY’s Town Hall. The same year she also played the Brahms Violin Concerto with Mengelberg and the NY Philharmonic and won the Schubert Memorial Prize. She wed W. Parker Start, and they had two children. The family then settled in Burlington, VT, 1944, where she taught (privately as well as at the Vermont Junior College and then the University of Vermont) from 1944 to at least 1966. One source also mentioned that she spent a period in Dallas, TX, teaching and performing, apparently after her Vermont years.
