Unsound

From the outset, ‘Unsound’ was not going to be like any other Mission of Burma album. As expected, the material is raw, primal and aggressive. They still have a signature knack for twisting even the most ferocious noise into complex structures. There are, of course, those killer hooks scattered throughout, but just not quite where you would expect. Yet with all three lead members resolutely making the decision to deliberately stretch their boundaries even further, they stepped out of their comfort zone to create their most rewarding, bewildering and multifaceted long-player yet. ‘Unsound’ is Mission of Burma’s 5th studio album, continuing their remarkable legacy. It seems redundant now to even call it a comeback because they’re a dynamic, current band. Originally together just four years, from 1979-83, Mission of Burma reformed in 2002 for a handful of shows…which let to more concerts, then more, and eventually the release of 2004's "ONoffON", their first new recording in over twenty years. But no one expected them to just keep putting out records, let alone records that were every bit as vital and influential as their seminal early recordings. Their first album ‘Vs’ is down in the annals of time as being one of the most important post-punk records ever. Their subsequent recordings: "ONoffON", "The Obliterati", "The Sound, The Speed, The Light", and now, "Unsound", continue to grow in scope, depth and accomplishment with every step. On "Unsound" we see Mission of Burma messing with their comfort zone by recording in their Boston rehearsal space which doubles as a recording studio: Analog Divide. As usual, Roger Miller (guitar, vocals), Clint Conley (bass, vocals) and Peter Prescott (drums, vocals) share the songwriting credits with their distinct styles. All of them tried their hand at other instruments and sounds, allowing them to take risks with their creativity and giving them a more fluid line-up. Of course, regular fourth member Bob Weston (of Shellac) was on hand to provide the tape loops and production duties. As part of the manifesto to stretch musical boundaries, Roger wrote two of his songs (“Opener” and “ADD in Unison”) on the bass rather than guitar. Another ("Dust Devil") was based on an acoustic guitar improvisation. Both Clint and Peter also tweaked their writing just enough to make them feel it was actually worthwhile making another record. They also decided to use trumpet on the record, so Bob pulled out his trumpet playing skills to oblige. Peter Prescott describes the experience: “We are a four headed hydra trying to create unity without canceling or censoring each head. So we juggle melody, groove, noise, depression, disruption, ecstasy… tension, release. I guess it’s thrilling for us to walk that musical tightrope.” Clint Conley describes being in the studio: “There were certain technological advances, as well, that might have been unthinkable just a few short years ago, in a distant time and century. During the mix at Woolly Mammoth, Peter occasionally opted for a virtual presence. From time to time a hologram of his head would appear, hovering in a darkened corner, issuing directives and encouragement. Not to say there weren't occasional glitches in the system. For a few days the hologram seemed locked in a mystifying loop, calling for more cymbals, regardless of whether the band were working on a mix or ordering Vietnamese food.” The results are spectacularly successful. With ‘Unsound’, Mission of Burma has achieved its goal of making something utterly unique and stretching the realms of musical possibility. Mission of Burma's curiosity and creativity remain undiminished. The graph just keeps rising…the boundaries breaking…and the ears ringing. Tracks : 1. Dust Devil 2. Semi-Pseudo-Sort-of Plan 3. Towards the end of the 20th century, Eleni Mandell visited a tarot card reader. At first, the Los Angeles singer-songwriter liked what she heard. "She asked, 'Are you a musician or a poet?'" recalls Mandell. "And she described my music in this incredible way that made a lot of sense to me." Within a year, critics were doing much the same thing, lauding kudos on Mandell's 1999 debut, Wishbone. The card reader also told the singer she'd marry at age 32. "Then I asked about having kids… and she had a weird response."

Fast forward to 2010. Our heroine's life was in tumult. Her seventh album, Artificial Fire, had been released the year before, as the nation was in the

throes of a deep recession. Not only was she still unmarried, but several long-term relationships—both romantic and professional—had recently soured. Starting a family without a dad at hand seemed a daunting prospect. "The fairy tale I'd thought I was going to have didn't happen, so I had to make something happen for myself," she admits. After much soul searching, she forged ahead on her own, and engaged the services of an anonymous sperm donor. "I can tell you that he's an astrophysicist and likes classic rock." She played Led Zeppelin and Bruce Springsteen at the baby shower.

It was during these emotionally charged months that I Can See The Future was composed. Although Mandell characterizes this period as one of "frustration, disappointment, and intense sorrow," the word that we think best captures the mood of her eighth full-length is "bittersweet." All thirteen of these new songs are marked by the wry humor and lyrical economy that have long made her work so striking.

With the assistance of producer Joe Chicarelli (The Shins), Eleni was able assemble an impressive cast of collaborators to help bring I Can Sse The Future to life. Benji Hughes plays Lee Hazelwood to Eleni’s Nancy Sinatra on the rambling lament of “Never Have To Fall In Love Again”. While Mandell’s co-conspirators in folk-rock vocal trio The Living Sisters - Inara George (The Bird And The Bee) and Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond) - contribute backing vocals throughout. Nathaniel Walcott (Bright Eyes) provided a classic pop sensibility through string and horn arrangements, while Greg Leitz (The Blasters, Matthew Sweet), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, The Blasters) and Joey Waronker (Beck, Smashing Pumpkins) provided pedal steel, saxophone and drums to help complement and frame Eleni’s dreamy, understated vocals.

I Can See The Future is Eleni Mandell’s first release as a member of the Yep Roc family, and we could not be more excited to have her on board.

Erika Spring Erika Spring (EP)

Available via Cascine on 12” vinyl, July 10

Starting as a way to indulge her interest in big-room dance and commercial pop, Erika Spring’s solo material gathered instant momentum on the strength of its effortless craftsmanship and finesse. The debut EP by Au Revoir Simone front-woman, Erika Spring, is utterly charming and suspiciously irresistible – a premium collection of five, electronic pop gems. With more teeth than her previous material, but with the same sense of synth-driven longing, Erika takes yet another step forward as one of New York’s most important young artists.

Digitalism has done a mix for the legendary K7! DJ Kicks series. And it is not a lie, on the contrary, it is nothing short of the truth to say, this is a dream come true for two young fellows from Germany. Twelve years ago, when they orginaly met, two record store workers in Hamburg, admiringly selling the DJ Kicks series to their customers adoring not just the event of each release, the dexterity of the mix but most importantly the protagonists behind each release, the artist, the DJ, the mixer. Their favourites over the last two decades are Tiga’s (“His mix was a great essence of edgy and cold electro-techno.”), Trevor Jackson's Playgroup (“More really playful stuff.)” and Erlend Oye (“Cause he sung over a lot of stuff and had some favs like Jürgen Paape, the collab with Morgan Geist and Avenue D (2D2F) on it.”).Summer 2012 is their time, now they have to prove it themselves. To make it short, this mix has it all! They move sometimes slow and easy, in other moments ecstatic and without second thoughts through the tracks. Thereby their attitude jumps between impetuous and cocky, as the sounds hit challengingly between electro rock and synth-pop, new wave and trance, techno and disco punk and pop glamour. On this journey they include tracks by Opptimo, Alex Gopher, WhoMadeWhoe, Kölsch, Vitalic, to name a few, alongside exclusive tracks and new material from the band themselves. Moelle and Tüfekçi wanted to represent their past as DJs, their “sonic universe” as they call it. The target was to unite new Digitalism music and “timeless pieces that describe us and our sound. But how did they start with chosing the other tracks for the mix? Like everybody else would do: They made a list of all the magic tracks coming to mind over the last decade. As they used to work in a record store, they of course have it all on vinyl, but at home, and as the Digitalism were quite busy touring the last year, with 90 performances all over the world, they had to do it the internet nerd way and google themselves into a trance. The Majority of the chosen music is from friendly associated labels and producers, cleverly mixed up with tracks by models of the past. "Some stuff that we chose from the early 2000s clash era got lost in a jungle of major label licensing buerocracy, and for one or two years we've been playing our edit of Simple Minds' "I travel" and would have loved to finally pass this on to the outside world, but you know, bootleg things you've done with the real big names are usually just off the table.“ But they were both absolutely happy with the final material they got for the mix. From that point on intuition took over and led them into a very melodic mix, perfect for “a sundowner drink” as they say themselves. “We can imagine this running around late afternoon/sundown. By the time it gets dark, you can dive deeper into the music.“

Delicate Steve’s debut album Wondervisions was critically hailed across the board-from a lead review in The New York Times, to NPR, to blogs like Stereogum and The Fader. The record made a minor ripple… but those who heard it fell in love with it. It made NPR’s year end list, and made Delicate Steve a favorite among a cadre of bands including Yeasayer, Ra Ra Riot, Akron Family, and Dirty Projectors - many of whom either brought the band on the road with them, or went out of their way to turn folks on to the burgeoning instrumental unit.

Positive Force explodes the promise of Wondervisions. A response to taking a bedroom record out into the world and performing in front of large crowds, Positive Force is a much bigger record sonically than the debut. What is becoming a signature command of melody- that thing that allows you to sing these wordless songs out loud, and rejoice while doing it- is front and center here. Positive Force is a world unto itself. Written, recorded, and mixed by Delicate Steve’s namesake Steve Marion, it’s a record that wraps itself around you and brings it to its own place. Listen to it now.

Chatham County LineSight & SoundNATIONAL reLeAse dATe: 07.10.20121xCd/dVd ANd 2xLP/dVd: On a recent summer evening in downtown Raleigh, NC, Chatham County Line set up shop at a stately theater filled with hundreds of their most devoted fans and captured for the ages what they do best: gathering around a single microphone to play and sing their own songs.

The result, the two-disc audio and video collection Sight & Sound, is an essential document of one of the finest acoustic ensembles North Carolina has ever produced. In a state rich with bluegrass, folk and country legends, this quartet stands out for its left-of-center approach, bringing a rock ’n’ roll sensibility to roots forms in a manner that appeals to traditional and contemporary camps alike.

“I really feel like you get the best out of something by holding it back a little bit,” guitarist and primary singer Dave Wilson explains in an interview segment on the DVD. “We are just dying to be louder than all get-out and go crazy — but you don’t plug any of us in, you put us behind a microphone. It keeps us under control so much that it’s just kind of bristling.”

You can feel the energy throughout Sight & Sound, which includes 20 tracks drawing from all five albums of the band’s decade-long career. Nine songs appear on both the audio CD and the DVD; four are exclusive to the DVD, while the CD expands the collection with seven more tracks (including two taken from a Christmas-tour show in Atlanta).

“It was something the fans have always asked for,” Wilson says. “A lot of people think we sound better live and in-person than we do on record. They’ll say, ‘We wish your records sounded like you do live!’ And there was a thought of this kind of being a loose ‘Greatest Hits,’ if you will, so it has songs from each record gathered all in one place.”

Thus they go all the way back to the beginning — “Closing Town,” the leadoff track on the very first Chatham County Line record in 2003 — as well as revisiting three songs each from 2005’s Route 23 and 2006’s Speed of the Whippoorwill. There’s a bit more focus on the band’s two most recent albums, 2008’s IV and 2010’s Wildwood, perhaps a reflection of how much the band has come into its own in the past few years.

TRACKLISTING CD 1

Strut presents an all new compilation placing the spotlight on early house music and acid emerging from the UK during the mid to late ‘80s, ‘This Ain’t Chicago’. Compiled by respected DJ / producer Richard Sen (Padded Cell, Bronx Dogs), the album celebrates the heady era when UK producers were responding to the first wave of Chicago house and documents the underground clubs that first championed the music – as the early rave scene and acid house kicked in at London clubs like Shoom and Spectrum, deeper and darker house nights thrived like RIP at Clink Street, Confusion and The Jungle and in warehouse parties around East London. Manchester too adopted house music at an early stage, most famously at The Hacienda’s Nude night. As well as an in-depth look at the music and the accompanying scene through the DJs and producers that were there, ‘This Ain’t Chicago’ investigates media and clubland's attitude to the emerging sound during house music’s early days, as early resistance from London’s rare groove and hip hop scene gave way to an explosion of dance music and rave culture. Musically, the album draws on both underground classics and lesser known tracks including early outings by producer Julian Jonah, A Guy Called Gerald, Trevor Fung’s Playtime Toons, Eddie Richards and Ian B’s Rio Rhythm Band and Baby Ford. The compilation also celebrates a host of excellent but short-lived UK DIY labels including Ruby Red from West Midlands, G-Force out of Essex, Rhythmbeat, Chill and Catt. “This album features many personal favourites and the tracks were particularly inspira-tional to me as a DJ and clubber at the time,” reflects Richard Sen. With current productions drawing heavily on early house sounds and production techniques, this album brings to light many previously unsung classics from the UK underground, still sounding as vibrant and relevant as during the early days of house.

Dead Rat Orchestra have become the slow burning backwater of British music; perpetually hovering on the fringes of distinct scenes, yet never fully on-board, they remain their own mutable paradigm. They perform with violins, harmoni-ums, logs, axes and pigeon flutes; folly snow-boxes, semi-strung guitars, home-wired glitchers and record player clunks; they use organ pipes like hunting horns, which are overblown like great whales; and with shards of metal, cast to the floor in shimmering joy. For nearly a decade Dead Rat Orchestra have effortlessly remained the most original and unconventional live act around, both challenging the tradi-tional concert setting and bringing a powerful and innovative performance aesthetic to their music whilst never falling into the trappings of novelty. Over the past two years they have performed or collabo-rated with the likes of Baby Dee, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Marc Almond, Eric Chenaux, David Tibet, A Silver Mt Zion, Natural Snow Buildings, Sandro Perri, Trembling Bells and many others. The Recording Process: To record the soundtrack for The Guga Hunters of Ness, the band converted a decommission LightShip (Light House Ship) on a tidal river in Essex in to a recording studio, which is probably the only studio in the world whose acoustics changes with the rising and falling of the tide. The band extensively researched old melodies from Ness in conjunction with Malcolm Taylor at the Vaughn Williams Memorial Library. The director also took field recordings of the Ness Church Choir, where they performed a unique form of psalm singing, which appears on the track “Saltslide”.

BEAK> , formed by Geoff Barrow, Matt Williams and Billy Fuller in 2009 re-corded their debut album in Bris-tol, created out of 12 days of improv ses-sions and then edited into song form. The band then went on a successful tour including festival dates across Europe and the U.S. Buzzing from the tour Beak> then returned to the studio to start work of the second album only to find that the time on the road had taken its toll on the bands delicately sensitive and creative nature. And, by conse-quence had turned them into a truly awful-sounding pub prog-rock band. The magic had gone. It seemed that the band were thoroughly moribund. Until...one rainy afternoon in Bristol after many tortured, truly terrible re-cording sessions something changed. It may have been the diesel fumes from the bands tour bus had worn off, others say that the band simply turned their amplifiers down. We will possibly never know but the band began to play and once again their bleak wobbly anti-blue note sound had returned, but this time with added synthesisers. And so..recorded in one room live (with very few overdubs) Beak>> is upon us. Double heavyweight vinyl comes with embossed sleeve and 2 extra tracks.

1995 : The Sea and Cake’s second studio album Nassau is released. Out of print on vinyl for over a decade we are happy to finally offer it again. This 2012 edition was remastered to vinyl by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering and pressed on high quality virgin vinyl. The two LPs are packaged in a jacket fully replicating the original artwork and includes a double sided insert and for the first time a download coupon!

Nassau was recorded by John McEntire at the now defunct Idful Studios in Chicago. The album moves the band away from the more immediate pop leanings of their self-titled debut and sees them begin to experiment as a band in production and songwriting. Nassau was featured on many 1995 year end lists, moving the band into the spotlight and out of the shadows. Nassau lives up to the promise of their debut and raised the bar for things to come.

2012 marks 20 years of Thrill Jockey. We will be celebrating by re-pressing and re-issuing many classic titles on vinyl. June brings us two classics from The Sea and Cake. Both have been out of print on vinyl for many years.

1997 : Following on from their 1995 albums Nassau and The Biz The Sea and Cake spent most of ‘96 touring and returned in ‘97 with The Fawn. Again unavailable on vinyl for nearly a decade this 2012 edition was also remastered to vinyl by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering and is pressed on high quality virgin vinyl. The LP is packaged in a deluxe old-style tip-on gatefold jacket fully replicating the original artwork and includes a download coupon for the first time!

With the core line up of Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, Eric Claridge and John McEntire in place, the band recorded The Fawn after spending most of 1996 on the road with tours of the US, Europe and Japan. Whilst many of the songs were tried out first live, they soon became after thoughts of the studio. What is most striking about The Fawn is the continued exploration of recording techniques which has long been a trademark of the band. With each release they have remained very much a pop band, but have embraced technology to augment their sound. The band broadened their range of texture and sound (strings, percussion and synthesized sounds) and spent more time in the studio than ever before. Refining and redefining the songs to make it their most diverse and accomplished record to date.

It was 24 Years ago that Tyla wrote an album by the name of…‘A Graveyard of Empty Bottles’, It was his concept piece at the time, an emotional journey through Life, Love and Death. The Dogs D’amour began recording in an East London stu-dio on the 9th December 1988. With just 8 days to record and mix they got to work and it didn’t take long before she emerged from a sea of cigarette smoke and red wine. China records would only initially press 15,000 numbered 10’’ vinyls And so in 1989 she came to surpass expectations and sailed into the UK album charts anchoring a position of sweet 16. With the 15,000 pieces of black Gold treasure hunted by the faithful she sailed into the sunset morphing into several thousand 12’’ vinyls and tens of thousands newly born Compact Discs. A sea of worthy hearts engulfed her then she sank to the bottom of the deep blue. Much talked about in the music press and on rock forums alike ‘A Graveyard of Empty Bottles’ became the thing of myth and legend. It was an album that not only entertained, it enthralled its listeners and encapsulated those who dared.. Like a mermaid on the rocks people would be drawn to the tales of heartache and stories of woe. In a clever twist rock minds were subtly broadened by listening to something a bit more poetic and tender than the systematic commercial rock of the day. What happens with good poetry is that it inspires others, stands the test of time…. And get better with age Over the years fans of the Dogs D’amour have remained dedicated, growing up with Tyla they turn up at shows relig-iously, often bringing their offspring to experience the heartfelt performances mixed with banter and booze. Collecting every piece of art, poetry and limited albums and treasures alike. Now from the depths up she rise’s, re-recorded by Tyla with all the vitality a soul can muster up cloaked in fifty years of singing, strumming and strolling this earth has pro-duced. We give you ‘A Graveyard of Empty Bottles MMXII’ Track listing: I Think It’s Love Again; So Once Was I; Comfort Of The Devil; Saviour; Errol Flynn; Bullet Proof Poet; When The Dream Has Gone; Angel; English Outlaw; Gone Are All The Angels; Dead 'Fore She Got Young; Stealin' From The Devil; Wont You Let Go 10" vinyl track listing: A Side - I Think It’s Love Again; So Once Was I; Comfort Of The Devil; Saviour / B Side - Errol Flynn; Bullet Proof Poet; When The Dream Has Gone; Angel – The 10” is limited to 300 copies worldwide

Sober Minds

Jon Windle releases his eagerly awaited follow up to 2010’s STEP OUT THE MAN, on 28th OF MAY 2012 with 10 infectious new tracks packed full of the classic wit, humour, twists and turns that have become synonymous with a Windle tune. Recorded once more with Alan Smyth at 2Fly studios, this album charts the journey of several imagined characters through a life changing weekend of drunken debauchery, ro-mance, regret and libatious pleasures. With frank and deliberately ironic humour and subtle poetry, Sober Minds has a definite sixties psyche influence, whilst maintaining a contemporary edge in its lyrical content. Windle’s growing maturity as a solo recording artist is evident in the style and subject matter of the tracks offered on this second release. His ability to recall his youth, with joy and just enough cynicism to keep us interested alongside his talent for writing solid, danceable pop music ensures this album will find a place in the hearts of fans old and new, local and international. Lead Single, THE BOY WITH THE GINGER HAIR, will be released for free on 16.04.12 with the video to give you a flavour of the new sound that has been creeping it’s way into Win-dle’s live set. AND IF THAT’S NOT ENOUGH!!!!!!! JON will be celebrating the release of the new album with a very special and intimate live show in Shef-field at QUEENS SOCIAL CLUB, QUEENS ROAD on FRIDAY 1st JUNE 2012. Fossil

Original debut solo album by Melanie Garside (aka Maple Bee) Contains both singles “Big White Room “ & “She Knows “ This album has been out of print for 10 years and to coincide with the brand new Maple Bee album “These four worlds “(due this summer) and also the brand new Huski album “H” a limited amount of this album will be made available. The record was well received by the music business achieving Album of the Month in Music Week and re-ceiving critical acclaim from the broadsheet press - The Sunday Times likening Garside's musical force and talent to that of Annie Lennox. The alternative press who had previously championed Garside, did not take to the new direction. London Underground stations were full of promotional posters for the first sin-gle and BBC Radio 1 gave Big White Room extensive daytime play. The videos for the single featured on Saturday morning TV show, The Chart Show. Garside also appeared on The Big Breakfast (Channel 4) with cult puppet act Zig and Zag, she made an evening appearance on The James Whale Show, GMTV and sang with The James Taylor Quartet on The Gaby Roslin Show. Staff-ing issues at the record label meant that although Big White Room was well received the record was not actually available to buy in the shops and it disappeared fairly quickly. The second single She Knows was available to buy but received very little press. Garside spent the next year touring and travelling in South East Asia, promoting Fossil in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, North Korea and Taiwan. Track listing: 1/Centred Sideways 2/Big White Room 3/Broken Fingers 4/She Knows 5/Has And To Do 6/Stay 7/Sick On Words 8/Hide9/Learn To Learn 10/One for now 11/Smile 12/Besides 13/Snow Shoes

C I S 1 0 5 0 : S E L F - T I T L E D The name of a band can say so much about its sound and the

personalities that create it. There's no better example of this than with the Vienna-based group

known as theclosing.

"theclosing is written together like that because we are not a "band" and our music is about three

very different personalities getting close and communicating through sound. It's more about things

coming together than coming to an end."

So says Alexander Hengl, one of the core members of theclosing alongside fellow musicians/artists

Lukas Lehner and Daniela Auer. The three have been working together since 2004 towards the goal

of making beguiling and original electronic music that mixes analog and digital sources, including

self-made samples, found sounds, and field recordings.

Just as their three personalities and talents combine towards the singular goal of creating music

and art that evades easy genre classification, so too has theclosing honed in their efforts to bring to

life their self-titled record.

The group's debut self-titled release for Portland independent label Circle Into Square embraces a

wide variety of influences. The sputtering pulse of modern hip-hop comes out in tracks like "rrroar";

"nyejreska" takes on slow simmer of a steamy downtempo IDM come on; ambient roots start to show

on the pinging album closer "m4".

The songs may come from different parts of the band's collective brain, but they connect perfectly on

record. It's even more surprising how well things lock together considering their loose working

methods.

"We try to channel the subconscious through mouse clicks," says Hengl. "Playing around with

samples, our voices, and instruments; letting things happen 'til there is something. At some points

we try to lead things in a certain direction but never too much. As soon as we think too much about

it, things get worse."

That kind of theorizing about creation should be familiar to anyone who, like the members of

theclosing, went to art school. Hengl, Lehner, and Auer all met while studying at the Academy of

Fine Arts in Vienna, and all three work on various art projects outside of the fold of the band,

including short film work and computerized visual art.

theclosing's music is visionary and instantly accessible. Anyone with a pulse and a pair of hips can

find something to sway about on the record. The beats are strong and vibrant and dominate the 14

songs found here. This is a record for the head nodders and the deep thinkers alike. Not that the

two are mutually exclusive, but there's something for mind and body here. An indescribable and

palpable energy that you'll be itching to tap into.
