Tchaikovsky was a brilliant and resourceful orchestrator, and probably the greatest writer of ballet music the world has ever known. An excellent disc from one of the world’s most accomplished concert organists.

Festive music for the holiday season performed by an outstanding mixed chorus with pipe organ, harp, flute, and bell-ringers. “Magical” (Fanfare).

Features German Baroque works by Praetorius, Altenburg, Hammerschmidt, Buxtehude, Schütz, Lübeck, Scheidt, Schein, and Tunder.

All the traditional characters of the Nativity are here, with angels, shepherds, Wise Men, and the time-honored sounds of Christmas brought to life by bagpipes and other pastoral instruments.

The three Christmas cantatas brought together here belong to the same period, notably the first months after J.S. Bach’s assumption of his new duties as Cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

This recording brings together several Christmas cantatas from the almost 1,400 composed by Graupner. Their rediscovery now completes a chapter in music history that was once almost totally unknown.
