Peter still can’t figure out how it happened...He had known Mary since he was 12 and shewas 10. It seemed that she was always around.

When they were in their teens they were bothsort of in the same crowd but not really. Theolder they got it was always like ina group. By the time they hit the 20sshe seemed to be around no matterwhat was going on. Then one day hetook a good look at her and some-thing seemed to click. There wassomething different about her thatnow was intriguing. Maybe becauseshe looked good in high heels. Whatever it was he felt something a bitmore than he ever had before.

Before he could even figure it out, he sug-gested that maybe they should get a bit closer, maybe live together. They both had decent jobsand it might be fun.

She spent about 10 seconds thinking and thenlaid out a complete program of how it wouldwork, how the money would be split and thebills paid on the rent and utilities. He was aston-ished how she had set it up because he hadn’teven realized he was thinking about it. Nextthing he knew they had found a small apartmentand they were filling it with furniture. Then hefound out she was a pretty good cook thus sav-

ing going out to eat as much. She was also inter-ested in the sports he liked and even brought inhis buddies to watch with him.

After a few months of this, she suggested thatmaybe she could help him buy clothes thatcould fit him better. Next she sort of suggestedmaybe he could use a better barber who wouldbring out his personality. He began to marvel at

hew well she knew him since shewas quite a mystery to him. By nowhe felt that he should check with heron even his underwear and that was abit off the wall. Also she had himexercising with her by running amile or two twice a week and goingto a gym. Somewhere along the way, marriage came up to save some taxmoney doing this. Took a week ofthinking on his part and he proposed,

at which time she told him the costs of a wed-ding and who they could invite. They had asmall wedding, a nice week’s honeymoon andsomehow since she was a better bookkeepernow that they were married, she better figureout who and when to pay bills.

They’ve been married three months now. Sheis quite serene about everything and Peterknows he is married but... how did it happen? He decided to ask his married sister about thisand she just laughed.

She might think it is funny but how did ithappen?

Sunny Isles Beach is cel-ebrating its 15th anniversary– so it’s the perfect time tolist “fifteen favorite things”everyone loves most aboutlife in the city…

11:: RReeaall OOcceeaannffrroonnttDDiinniinngg:: Where else but Sunny Isles Beachcould you have lunch or dinner not just withan ocean view – but literally steps from theocean! The “Bella” Trump resort diningexperience is certainly a favorite choice foranyone who really loves surf and turf!

22:: RRiibbss aanndd RReessoolluuttiioonnss:: Having a TonyRoma’s right next door to Sunny Isles BeachGovernment Center is another favorite perk– especially during exceptionally long CityCommission meetings when you can tellwhere some people have gone during breaktimes when they come back with barbecuesauce on their face.

33:: LLuusshh LLaannddssccaappiinngg:: The swayingpalms in the medians along Collins Avenueare a favorite beautification enhancementreally appreciated by motorists who nolonger have to worry so much about jay-walking pedestrians trying to run across thestreet and present the ultimate challenge toanti-lock braking systems.

44--88:: SSttrroonngg LLeeaaddeerrss:: Five civic mindedpeople serving on the Sunny Isles BeachCity Commission account for five favoritereasons why the city is run so well: MayorNorman Edelcup, Vice Mayor Lewis Thaler,Commissioner George “Bud” Scholl,Commissioner Jeanette Gatto and

Commissioner Isaac Aelion…Let’s hopenone are ever recruited to be the running-mate for a presidential candidate in need ofgood advice!

99--1122:: PPaarrkk PPllaaccee:: Green open space is afavorite amenity in Sunny Isles Beachthanks to the plethora of city parks includ-ing Pelican Park, Town Center Park,Heritage Park and Samson OceanfrontPark…And now that even more parks willsoon be gracing the south end of the city, don’t be surprised if a major league base-ball team makes a bid to share the space inreturn for installing a retractable roof, con-cession stands and plenty of parkingspaces!

1133:: FFrreeee TTrraannssppoorrttaattiioonn:: If shopping isyour hobby, the Sunny Isles Beach shuttlebus fleet could be your favorite means oftransportation – especially since the busesare big enough to fit all those boxes of newshoes!

1144:: FFuunn iinn tthhee SSuunn:: The city’s Culturaland Human Services Department is alwaysplanning a great variety of activities andprograms for the whole community to enjoy– but of course, the biggest turnouts arealways when the event features everyone’sfavorite free food!

1155:: FFrreeee WWii--FFii:: For residents and visitorsaddicted to social media sites, free Wi-Fi incity parks is a favorite bonus – so in returnfor the complimentary connection, the CityCommission should make it mandatory foreveryone online to update their status toread “Loving life in Sunny Isles Beach,Celebrating 15 Years of Success – Wish YouWere Here!!”

HOW YOU CAN HELP: Public Support is essential for the survival of

sea turtles. Here are some ways you can help: • Never approach turtles emerging from

the sea or disturb or harass nesting turtles. Nomatter how quiet, humans will often - andunknowingly - frighten nesting sea turtlesback into the sea.

• Use caution while boating to avoid colli-sion with turtles.

• Stay clear of marked sea turtle nests onthe beach.

• Keep bright lights from shining onto

the beach. If you have security or safetylights near the beach, build shades aroundthe light so the beach is not directly illu-minated.

• Call the Florida Fish & WildlifeConservation Commission (FFWC) toreport someone disturbing a sea turtle nestor an injured, dead, or harassed sea turtle.Call: 1-888-404-FWCC or Cell phone:*FWC or #FWC

There is a natural tendency in animalsand human beings to hide things. Amongthe things that are hidden are secrets; hid-den hurts, hidden tears, hidden fears. Youmight have hidden them because theycaused painful feelings or because theycaused feelings of shame and embarrass-ment. You might have learned to hide cer-tain things when you were young becauseyour family may have told you to hide themby word or inference. Regardless of thecause you probably have one or more hid-den secrets.

If you seek out those secrets you willundoubtedly find that you no longer have tokeep them hidden. Looking for them andfinding them is part of becoming yourauthentic self. The energy involved in hid-ing them would be available to you forother things. You would be free of the bur-den they impose.

While you are seeking hidden secrets

you might as well look for hidden happi-ness. Just as you have hidden secrets youprobably have hidden happiness that is justbelow your level of consciousness. Seek itout. Learn to become more aware. Hiddenhappiness often does not shout. It has a ten-dency to whisper.

Right now, this second, on a scale of 1-5, “How do you feel?” If you answer “ok”that is a good rating. Any number even a 0is a good number. Many people carryaround mediocre feelings from day to dayand never notice that there are momentswhen they are relatively happy. It is impor-tant to realize that you can have majorissues going on but you do not have to liveactively unhappy every moment. Beingunhappy can become a habit of thought.

Science has shown that your thoughtsrelease hormones in your body. The stresshormone cortisol, over time will make yourhippocampus get smaller. Your hippocam-pus gives you the ability to experiencepleasure so you want it to be normal in size.

Playing hide and seek will improveyour quality of life and make you happier.

but the bright future was beyond anyone’swildest imagination

Revitalization quickly resulted as promises made came true

Sunny Isles Beach was a new mecca for “Life With a View”

A benefit of incorporation and having adestiny to control

was starting a Police Department withmore officers on patrol

The city’s new shuttle bus system was next to arrive

creating great services was always theCommission’s drive

With so many multi-million dollar properties staring to rise

the city forged a Comprehensive Plan to keep things the right size

“Beach access,” “tall and skinny” were zoning key phrases

were among all the new projects addingjust the right touch

City departments created streamlined consolidation

from Code Enforcement and PublicWorks- to Zoning Administration

Great City Managers were hired with a talented knack

for balancing the budget and staying “in the black”

Then almost as fast as day turns to dark the city started dedicating lots of new

In Aventura, it’s never dull or boring andjust when you think you know how yourday’s gonna go - anything can happen whenyou least expect it…

CLICKER WAR You never expected you wouldn’t have

cable for almost a month due to a “facilitiesissue.” So you come up with the great idea towatch the American Idol finale on the bigscreen in the building’s exercise room…afterall, who will be in there at 8 p.m. at night??Turns out there’s one guy holding the clicker, tuning into a basketball playoff game. Don’tdare ask to change the channel - unless youhappen to be a super model; have a lot of cashon you; or you’re muscular enough to win the“clicker war.”

HOUSE BEAUTIFUL After searching for the perfect sofa, you

find just what you’re looking for and get a

great deal on the floor sample. Unfortunately, a couple of days after it’s

delivered, you notice a damage and can’treturn it. But then, you see an ad inAventura Magazine for a new furniturestore and when you stop by, you unexpect-edly find another sofa you fall in love with.So you give away the first one and when thenew one is delivered it’s in perfect condi-tion – too bad they damage your door andwalls while moving it in!

WATER LOGGED Leaks happen – but when they cause mold

you’re allergic to you may have to move to anew home. Once you’re settled in, you’ll startto feel much better…until there’s an unex-pected knock on your door and the buildingengineer informs you that your new place hasa new leak. The good news is Aventura’sSports Authority has a great selection ofwaterproof gear - and Aventura Mall storessell very fashionable raincoats and galoshes!

EXPECT THE BEST: Unexpected things can happen – but when

you live in Aventura, you can always expectsome of the best things in life - like free valetparking while they’re renovating the plazawhere your favorite bagel place is!

For budgetary reasons last fall, theMiami-Dade County Library Systemreduced library hours across the county, including at the Sunny Isles BeachBranch Library. The library was able toreduce staff and cover one eight hourshift each day, but in the process com-pletely eliminated service on one day.As a result, patrons who arrive onFridays find the library completelyclosed.

This new arrangement did not makeour residents or visitors happy. Vice-Mayor Lewis Thaler contacted thecounty library system to find out whatour options were, and then with theCity Manager negotiated a new agree-ment with the County to re-open ourlibrary branch on Friday afternoons. InNovember the City Commission passedthis agreement to fund an additional 4

hours a week on Fridays from 2:00pmto 6:00pm. The Miami-Dade CountyCommission ratified the agreement onJanuary 23, 2012 and will move for-ward with staffing the library again onFridays. That gives our residents back asix day a week local branch library tovisit and enjoy.

The revised hours will begin onFriday, February 10, 2012 as follows:

• Monday, Tuesday, Saturday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm• Wednesday, Thursday 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm• Friday 2:00 – 6:00 pm• Sunday, Closed

Special thanks go to Miami-DadeCounty Commissioner Sally Heymanfor supporting the City and facilitatingthis change for the better.

BY CHIEF FRED MAAS AND SUSAN SIMPSON, CHS DIRECTOR

What better way to send our graduating high school sen-iors off to their respective colleges, than with a smile ontheir face and a check in their hand? That is exactly whathappened on the night of April 18, 2012, at the NewportHotel during the 2nd Annual College Scholarships AwardsDinner for Sunny Isles Beach and Golden Beach Students.

After a year long wait to become eligible as senior stu-dents, the eligible city residents for both Sunny Isles Beachand the Town of Golden Beach submitted applications tobe reviewed by a select committee. The process is easy, the reward is significant. Ask the students themselves, some of whom received $2,500. towards their collegeexpenses, others receiving, $2,000. for theirs.

If there was one word that adequately depicts the reac-tion and captures the moment of these wonderful youngpeople it would be “GRATITUDE.” That was the themeof the night in describing the efforts and personality profileof each student being recognized, a single word used todescribe them. For Example:

• Stephanie Bensadoun “DETERMINED”• Skylar Henry “GRATEFUL”• Samantha Iglesias “CONFIDENT”• Kelsey Roman “SENSITIVE”• Laura Mayor “PASSIONATE”• Sveatoslav Gleanco “GIVING”• Mark Fridman “LIFE-CHANGER”• David Schiumerini “LOYAL”

The tone for the evening was set with a lovely receptionprior to the dinner, and opening ceremony by the PoliceHonor Guard for Sunny Isles Beach, opening remarks byChief Fred Maas and the Introduction of the CelebrityEmcee for the evening, Mr. Ari Odzer of local media famefor NBC – 6. Mr. Odzer is an acclaimed, Emmy Awardwinning newsman and investigative reporter. He wasdelighted to have been a part of such a special evening andexpressed his feelings about the students, the city, the pro-gram. “I wish they had scholarship programs such as thiswhen I was off to college. Every bit helps in today’s cost-ly era of college tuition,” Mr. Odzer was quoted as saying.

He brought seriousness, levity, personality and a real gen-uine sense of caring about the event to the evening.

The Guest Speaker for the evening was the Vice Provostfrom Florida International University, Dr. Steven Moll, who spoke on what to expect as they embark on their col-lege careers. Dr. Moll was dynamic, funny, intuitive andvery informative for the honored students.

Members of the Sunny Isles Beach Community SchoolTrust were on hand and did a wonderful job of support plan-ning, and preparing for the night. Also in attendance were thehonorable City Commissioners, Vice Mayor and the Mayorof Sunny Isles Beach as well as a Commissioner and residentsof Golden Beach who jointly participated for the first timethis year. This should be a grand partnership for many years.

There were a host of other dignitaries, sponsors, specialguests and residents as well as city officials including theCity Manager and State elected officials. In essence, therewere many, many friends to the City of Sunny Isles Beach

Scholarship Program. But probably the greatest group in attendance, those

most moved and most grateful for the City and its pro-gram, were the parents and family members of the stu-dents. “GRATEFUL” to the point of tears and smiles andhugs, because for many, this is ALL the help they will getas they move on to their respective college careers.

Finally, Susan Simpson and Chief Maas would like tosay “THANK YOU” for all the nice things that were saidabout our efforts on this most beneficial program. It is ayearlong effort, with many behind the scenes efforts that allcome together for one very special night. But receiving avery heartfelt thank you, or an acknowledgement from thestudent and their family, make every bit of our effort worth-while. And for the current day juniors in high school,“get busy” for your senior year so that you will be on thehonored list of Sunny Isles Beach or Golden Beach schol-ar recipients.

• DEFINITION OF AFLAG: Usually a piece ofcloth, oblong or square, bearing the distinctivearrangement of symbolsand colors of a Nation, orState, or having a mean-

ing as a signal; in the U.S. “Old Glory” or“The Stars and Stripes” or “The StarSpangled Banner,” the colors; ourNational trademark.

• “The Republic, never retreats. Its flagis the only flag that has never knowndefeat. Where that flag leads, we follow, for we know that the hand that bears itonward is the unseen hand of God.”Albert J. Beveridge, speech inPhiladelphia. February 15, 1899.

• “The Flag is the embodiment, not ofsentiment, but of history. It represents theexperiences made by men and women, theexperiences of those who do and liveunder the Flag.” President WoodrowWilson, speech in New York, June 14,1915.

Nobody knows who devised the firstflag, but there is a story about how it hap-pened.

“Seems that one warrior got hurt in afight between two tribes, and held up hisbloody garment to show that he neededhelp, and everybody followed him. That’swhy so many flags use the color red, saythe mythmakers.” “Because it’s so easy tofollow…” “Oh, say does that StarSpangled Banner yet wave/ o’er the landof the free, and the home of the brave?”(Francis Scott Key, “The Star SpangledBanner,”) September 1814.

Jambo! It’s more or less the equivalent of “Hey,

what’s up? How are you?” It’s most oftendelivered with gusto and a warm, friendlysmile. It was the greeting heard most oftenduring 8 days spent experiencing a side ofNairobi, Kenya most tourists probably neversee.

How did I end up in Nairobi? TheBozeman, Montana-based company TheHabiHut invited me to join their team todocument the unveiling of a new product:a GE Solar Powered Water Kiosk station. What exactly is it and what does thatmean?

The kiosk is a lightweight, modular, portable structure which houses a new GE-designed water filtration system. As a jour-nalist and a woman, I was instantlyintrigued by this new concept, because thegoal is to install HabiHut kiosks in loca-tions throughout Nairobi and eventuallyacross Kenya. The kiosk provides resi-dents access to a manual pumping and fil-tration system which can offer clean, safedrinking water.

Day one in Nairobi, a thriving moderncity with skyscrapers, technology anddevelopment, quickly became an assaulton my senses. Our driver snaked his waythrough one of the cities wealthiest com-munities, filled with oversized mansionsand curved driveways. We then came to anunpaved, muddy road tucked between two

large brick walls topped with barbed-wirefencing. Smack dab in the heart of wealth, the dirt road opened up into one of thecities known slums, KAWANGWARE.

Thousands of people call the area home. But not home like we think of home. Wefound small, cramped shelters devisedfrom sheets of corrugated metal heldtogether with wire. In other cases, dwellings were splintered wood toppedwith make-shift roofs. There is no solidflooring; simply clay, mud and dirt.Garbage and debris clutters the area andclogs the nearby creek. There is no elec-tricity and the few sources of water tricklein from old, cracked and often contaminat-ed pipes. Imagine paying to have access tounclean water?

It is difficult to comprehend that in ourday in age, in a world with such wealth, that individuals live in such squalid condi-tions.

Water. Clean, SAFE water. A resourceand commodity we here in the UnitedStates take as a given. The HabiHut is nowlike a beacon of hope. In Kawangwarewomen are being trained how to filter thewater and create their own water-sellingbusinesses.

Clean water and economic empower-ment for the women! And the water? It’sjust one piece of the puzzle! Stay tuned...

BY RABBI YISRAEL BARON

Yellow lights at inter-sections seem a lot short-er than they used to bewhen I was a kid. I amconvinced that they makethose lights shorter sothey can catch you withthose red light cameras. When I told my kids

about my thoughts, my daughter challengedme. She said that maybe time goes byquicker as you age, so you experience theyellow light to be shorter, whereas in realitynothing has changed.

Does that mean I am having fun?Because they say that time flies when

you’re having fun. Or maybe it’s more like a great line I once

read. “Life is like a roll of toilet paper. Thecloser you get to the end... the quicker it goes.”

As time indeed does feel like it is goingby at a quicker pace, we need to learn thetools to manage time properly. I have real-ized that if I want to manage my time, I needto respect it for what it is.

Although you cannot see time with aphysical eye, because it is more abstractthan any physical entity, it is helpful if youcan visualize time as a physical space, witha beginning and an end. Then you chose tofill this space of time with whatever youdesire. Now remember, since time is mov-ing, if you don’t fill it as it comes, the oppor-tunity is gone forever.

“What did I do today?” “How did my dayfly by so quickly?” Sound familiar?

It is helpful to visualize that the activitiesyou put into the space of your time are likefog or smoke. No matter how much spaceyou give that fog or smoke, whether large orsmall, it always expands or contracts to fillthe space into what it is placed. It’s much thesame way with the space of time. Whateveryou put into a span of time, whether big or

small, trivial or great, it will expand to fillthat space.

A friend of mine prays that he shoulddie healthy. He doesn’t want to livethrough the misery of winding down withailing health. Imagine dying like that:healthy one day, and gone the next day, with absolutely no warning. It happensall the time. But hoping for this type ofsudden death deprives us a particular per-spective on life. There would be no timeto get really serious about life. Ironically, our nature is that we take things for grant-ed, and only appreciate something whenit is limited or is taken away from us alto-gether.

So I asked myself, “Why should we waitto be frail, when the opportunities are fewerto live life to the fullest? What if I lived asif this was the last week, month, or year ofmy life? Would things be different? Yes,there would certainly be more urgency, toaccomplish what is important. All distrac-tions would no longer be able to competefor my time. My order of priorities willemerge and make itself clear very quickly.Once and for all, the little voice of self-con-sciousness and that inner critic who voicesself-doubt would be silenced forever...That’s why we are told to consider everyday as if it was our last.

I wonder, are we capable of doing justthat?

Returning from an evacuation

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK is thethird generation of this iconic little sportscar, one that rocked the automotive worldwhen it unveiled the first modern automat-ic retractable hardtop back in 1997.

This latest SLK incarnation has severalnew wrinkles, including a wide SLS-inspired front grille with a sweeping hood, relatively long doors and a short rear section.Even with its futuristic look, its nose is rem-iniscent of the classic 190SL of the 1950s,considered by many as “the original SLK.”

The interior of the SLK also has beenrefreshed and includes such new standardequipment as rain-sensing wipers, powerfolding/auto dimming mirrors, power mem-ory seats with enhanced lumbar support,HD Radio, an integrated garage door open-er and a rearview mirror with an integratedcompass.

Our test car for the week was theSLK350 model, powered by the new 3.5-

liter V-6 engine with direct injection andmulti-spark ignition. With even morepower and better fuel economy than itspredecessor, the new SLK engine generates302 hp and 273 pounds-feet of torque.

Also available is the SLK250 with a newturbocharged 1.8-liter direct injection four-cylinder engine that produces 201 hp and229 pounds-feet of torque.

The 2012 SLK line also has a new trans-mission with a more advanced torque con-verter lockup clutch that provides even bet-ter fuel economy, more responsive driving, quieter operation and increased durability. The new transmission is designed to workbest with a new type of low-viscosity ATFtransmission fluid (colored blue instead ofthe usual red). Together with new planetarygears, bearings and internal seals, the “FE-ATF” fluid provides less friction andimproved fuel mileage.

This latest SLK continues with its distinc-tive retractable hardtop. With the top up, it’sa quiet, weather-tight coupe; push a buttonand in about 20 seconds later the car is top-less. Thanks to a pivoting rear window, thefolded roof of the SLK takes up relativelylittle trunk space. Like the retractable hard-top of the larger SL model, the rear windowof the SLK pivots to match the curvature of

the top as it’s being lowered. An optional AIRSCARF system can

extend the convertible open-air driving sea-son into the cooler months. Built into theseatbacks of the SLK, the neck-level heat-ing system blows warm air from the driverand passenger-seat head restraints, allowingyou to cruise comfortably with the topdown in cooler weather.

AIRSCARF even compensates automati-cally for changes in vehicle speed. A stan-dard fabric air deflector mounts to the SLK

roll bars, helping to reduce air buffeting.Going a step farther, an optional AIR-GUIDE Plexiglas wind deflector mounts tothe back of the roll bars.

Pricing on the 2012 Mercedes Benz SLKstarts at $43,375.

Tucked away in the luxurious AcqualinaResort & Spa in Sunny Isles Beach is one ofMiami’s finest restaurants, Il Mulino NewYork. Upon arrival, you become instantlyaware that you are about to embark on a lux-urious experience. You are immediatelygreeted by an army of resort staff who openevery car door simultaneously and providered carpet-style assistance.

The resort’s parking lot is adorned with ajaw dropping lineup of luxury vehicles thatseem to be on display as eye candy for thecar lover inside us all. I could go on for daysabout the resort’s stunning decor and helpfulstaff, but the focus here is about the experi-ence in the restaurant, and it leaves me withquite enough to rave about on its own.

I have enjoyed Il Mulino’s dinner serviceas well as the weekly Sunday Jazz Brunch. Both experiences were phenomenal and areon my personal recommendation list!

At dinner, we were greeted at the door andoffered an escort to any table of our choos-ing. Though the interior is stunning with anold world Italian decor partnered with softmusic and lighting, my wife and I chose tosit on the patio overlooking the palm treesand ocean. Our waiter was quick to arrive atour table and introduce himself as a team ofrestaurant staff filled our table with freshbruschetta and mussels, spicy fried zucchini,a basket of assorted breads and a chunk offresh parmesan to jump start our appetite.

Dressed in tuxedos, well versed in foodand wine and extraordinarily friendly, thestaff answers your questions and caters toyour every need. With precise anticipation, they appear when you need them and disap-pear when you want to be left alone to enjoythe moonrise over the ocean with your din-ner date. I recommend the Breaded ScampiOreganata as an appetizer, and the Ravioli aiPorcini in signature champagne truffle sauceas a main course.

The Sunday Jazz Brunch offers choicesfrom a select menu and will not disappoint. Ican close my eyes and still taste the sweetand spicy focaccia bread with caramelizedonions. It will be a difficult decision, but atbrunch you will choose one appetizer, onesalad and one main dish. For dessert, no suchpressure exists as you are provided an assort-ment of cakes and sweets for each guest atyour table. The tiramisu is perfectly light andthe flourless chocolate cake is intensely rich.Ignore your conscience and indulge yourself.

Whether you visit for dinner or brunch, IlMulino offers a one-of-a-kind Italian menuand pairs it with personal and friendly serv-ice that places the restaurant in a rare andelite class of fine dining establishments inSouth Florida. Treat yourself and a date or aclient to a meal at Il Mulino and you willearn a few brownie points, guaranteed.

Il Mulino New York is located in theAcqualina Resort & Spa in Sunny Isles Beach,17875 Collins Ave. For reservations for brunchor dinner, call 305-466-9191. For more infor-mation, visit <www.acqualinaresort.com>.

You don’t have to be a fitness modelor trainer to look like one if you learn whatthe pros know when it comes to imple-menting the most efficient training tech-niques and nutrition plans…

Aliciaa Marie,, Figuree ChampionTailorr Yourr Workoutt forr You – recognizethat what may work for your training part-ner may not work for you – do what yourbody needs; Eatt forr Yourr Bodyy Type –your nutrition plan also needs to cater toyour own personal goals and needs. A 5’3”woman doesn’t need the same caloricintake of a 5’10” woman; Bee Patient – ifyou’re starting something new, one or twoweeks may not be enough time to confirmthat something just isn’t cutting it; TrainEfficiently – the more you stimulate a mus-cle group, the more likely it is to grow inresponse. You can attain toner legs withspecific exercises such as walking lunges,Plyometrics or exercises with explosivemovements that build power and strength.

Jamiee Eason,, Fitnesss ModelI believe the government’s food pyra-

mid is a good general guideline for healthyeating, but it doesn’t take into accounttraining-specific needs. Here’s my “updat-ed” version of the food pyramid for fit peo-ple leading active lifestyles: Protein: Depending on the intensity andfrequency of your workouts, your proteinneeds could be as much as double those ofthe average person. Women want to aimfor 0.75 grams of protein per pound ofbody weight. The key is to distribute theprotein intake evenly throughout your dayto make sure you’re always building up,

not tearing down muscle. Starchyy Vegetabless andd Wholee Grains;; 2-66servingss perr day: Your needs for grainsand vegetables, which are sources of car-bohydrates to fuel workouts, will vary withyour training. If you’re going heavy oncardio or you’re involved in endurancesports, include foods like oatmeal, quinoaand sweet potatoes at each meal. If you’retrying to lose weight then you can bringyour intake down a few notches. Fruits;; 2-44 servingss perr day: It’s a miscon-ception to ban fruit due to its sugar content,as most fruit actually has a limited impacton blood glucose levels, and the amount ofslimming fiber and disease-fightingantioxidants are tough to beat. Goodd Fats;; 2-44 servingss perr day:: If youwant a healthy metabolism, strong heartand less belly fat, include one monounsat-urated fat source in each meal. Optimalchoices include egg yolks, avocado, flaxseed or coconut oil, wild salmon andraw nut butters.

Jenniferr Nicoolee Lee,, Celebrityy TrainerHere are some of my secrets for “flatabs”…To totally target your entire ab sec-tion, vary your exercises and try addingresistance. I coach my VIP clients to maketheir abs work twice as hard by holding aweighted plate, dumbbell or even a towelwhile doing their core exercises. Propernutrition is also key to revealing a sexy six-pack. Abs aren’t made in the gym, but inthe kitchen! Make sure you get enoughmuscle-building protein; eat whole grainsbefore 4 p.m.; and refrain from eating com-plex carbs at night. Ensure proper proteinabsorption at the right time - most impor-tantly, drink a protein shake within 60 min-utes after your workout.

BY LINDA RODRIGUEZ BERNFELD

Newspaper columnist Leonard Pitts, who won the Pulitzer Prize for commen-tary in 2004, has changed gears with hislatest book, Freeman, which takes place afew weeks after the end of the Civil War,

“Freeman has probably been in myhead for years,” Pitts says, “ever since Iread about former slaves and their history, and trying to reunite their family.”

The book’s protagonist is on a quest tofind his wife, whom he hasn’t seen in 15years.

“It’s a testimony to the power of loveand family,” Pitts says.

This book is close to Pitts’ his heart. Heis a fan of historical fiction and hasalways wanted to write a historical novel.Freeman touches on an aspect of historythat is little known.

“A lot of people don’t know what it waslike after the civil war.” Pitts says. “It wasa mess; it was not just a civil war and600,000 men dead; right after that, youhave the president assassinated, two greattraumas right on top of each other. It’sremarkable that the country survived.”

In Freeman, protagonist Sam Freemanhas been away for 15 years after escaping

from his owner. There was an ill-advisedescape attempt that left his son dead.Freeman’s wife, Tilda, blames Sam fortheir son’s death.

“That was their only child and it is 15years later when he returns to look for hisTilda,” Pitts says. “She has been sold, buthe doesn’t know it. The original ownerwas relatively humane and enlightened;she allowed her slaves to learn to read anddidn’t believe in separating families. Thatwas why the wife didn’t want to run. Butthe humane slave owner had financialtrouble and had to sell her property, including the slaves.”

Tilda is sold to a brutally cruel manwho is slightly crazed from the loss of hisson in the war. While Sam is traveling tothe south from Philadelphia, the slaveowner is forcing Tilda at gunpoint to walkwestward from Mississippi in hopes offinding territory where his rights as aslaveholder will be upheld.

“Sam and his wife didn’t get a chanceto see each other to grieve, Pitts says.“There is this pain and he needs her for-giveness or for her to slap his face. Thatadded an extra level of emotional com-plexity. He’s going back not justbecause he loves her, but because of the

emotional pain.”Pitts says he is fascinated with the

idea of what people will do for love andfamily.

This is Pitts’ third published novel andthis time he is working a book tour thatwill take him to Virginia, North Carolinaand four cities in Florida, including asigning date at Books and Books in CoralGables on June 9 at 7 p.m.

“There’s nothing like being in a bookstore,” Pitts says. “When you write abook, you’re saying something like,‘Boy, they’re going to love this!’ Butyou don’t get feedback until three yearslater after it is published. I’m lookingforward to listening to what peoplehave to say.”

Pitts says that when he writes a column,he gets feedback almost immediately;some good, some bad. Still, even though ittakes years for a book to go from conceptto publication, Pitts says he would ratherwrite fiction full time.

“But I have been in the middle of thingsfor so long,” says Pitts. “I am sure that ifI gave up writing a column there would betimes when I would miss being able toinsert my opinions into the public dis-course.”
