Happy Grandparents Day! JOEL & BETSY EYESTONE
Becoming a grandparent marks a significant life transition. It’s a time to pause and reflect on this new aspect of parenting adult children. Parenting is now primarily the role of the next generation while you take an important but secondary role. You have the joy of watching your children function as parents and the delight of participating in the development of their little ones. You praise God for His faithfulness, mercy and grace that have allowed both you and your children to reach this point.
God gave us the privilege of becoming grandparents last year. Little Mayne was born to our second son and his wife in August of 2015. We had mixed feelings about becoming grandparents—Yes, we were excited about having a baby GIRL join the family, but there was an almost subconscious sense that this new role was going to cause us pain. “Pain?” you ask. “How could such a joyous event cause pain?”
Knowing from the start that you are going to be separated from that precious little one (and her parents) for most of her young life is painful. Even when we are here in the U.S., our granddaughter is a 6-hour drive away. But missionaries are not the only ones who experience the loss of proximity to children and grandchildren. Surely many of you, for one reason or another, are not able to be present in the lives of some of your children and grandchildren. You know the ache of wanting to hold that smiling baby in the Facebook photo and kiss her chubby cheek.
Long-distance grand-parenting is a challenge, but there are ways we can have a significant role in the lives of our grandchildren. Social media offer many ways to communicate these days. Skype has allowed us to interact with our granddaughter, and we are grateful for these innovations.
Even though we took their grandchildren to the far side of the world, our own parents found ways to love and encourage our sons and have a significant impact on their lives. They have been faithful prayer warriors for all their children and grandchildren. They have always sent thoughtful cards and meaningful gifts for special occasions. They made special effort at great expense to be with their grandsons and focused their delighted attention on them. We want to emulate them in these ways.
Lord willing, we will have a few more times with our granddaughter before we return to the Philippines in January. We look forward to being with our GCF East church family there again—we miss you—but it will be hard to say goodbye to this precious little one who will change so much while we are gone.
