Breakout Sessions ……………………………………………………… 11:15 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.

2015-301 Playground Equipment and Surfacing Safety and Inspection

Speaker(s): Mariam Hootstein, Recreation Plus LTD

Description: This session will inform facility managers of inspection and safety

guidelines to prevent injuries on school grounds.

2015-302 Successful Leadership Through the Effective Delegation of Work

Speaker(s): David Hart, Senior Vice President, Public Finance, D.A. Davidson

Description: You’re so busy managing your day-to-day, you don’t have time for

strategic planning or for policy work, right? Wrong! If you want something done,

you got to do it yourself, right? Wrong again! In order to distinguish yourself as an

effective manager and a successful leader, you must become a skilled practitioner in

the art of delegation. Recognizing various levels of delegation – from assigning

ministerial tasks to granting full project independence – is among the aspects of this

important managerial practice that are to be discussed during this session. Be

prepared to join in the discussion about what constitutes authentic delegation and

how one becomes a skilled practitioner.

2015-303 Enterprise Risk Assessment – a practical approach to mapping and

understanding the risks facing your organization

Speaker(s): Kevin Sear, Paragon Audit & Consulting Inc. and Shelley Becker, Adams 12

Five Star Schools

Description: Enterprise risk assessment is a systematic process for identifying and

evaluating events that could affect the achievement of objectives, positively or

negatively. Such events can be identified in the external environment and within an

organization’s internal environment. When these events intersect with an

organization’s objectives—or can be predicted to do so—they become risks. Risk is

therefore defined as “the possibility that an event will occur and adversely affect the

achievement of objectives”. The enterprise risk assessment process is designed to

help identify and quantify the existing risks.

2015-304 Parent Teacher Organizations – what every school official should know (and

it’s more than you think!)

Speaker(s): Anton Dworak, Lyons Gaddis Kahn Hall Jeffers Dworak & Grant, PC.

Description: Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO’s) can generate tens of thousands

if not hundreds of thousands of dollars for schools and school districts, not including

countless volunteer hours given for school activities. Unless school districts take an

active role in encouraging and monitoring PTO’s, problems can arise that may cause

liability and PR issues for the districts. This seminar will give tips on how to create

and foster healthy PTO’s and give you the tools on training the PTO boards and

officers. The seminar will describe how a PTO is formed properly, liability issues,

sales tax issues, the relationship between district policies and PTO activities,

internal control tips, and compliance forms..

2015-305 GASB 68
