INTRODUCTION

Hosting Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) on the AWS Cloud is a cost effective solution for your enterprise resource planning. There are many choices that need to be made as you develop your cloud environment. These include the selection of the best server and storage configurations for your workloads. The following five technical considerations will guide you as you make your plans.

NETWORK ACCESS –AMAZON VIRTUAL PRIVATE CLOUD (VPC)

Many of our clients are continuing to invest in enhancements to Oracle EBS, but are tiring of the high cost and slow speed at which they are able to make these improvements. Here are a few examples of how our clients are improving EBS:

• Deploying Oracle Business Intelligence, or similar apps, to improve the quality of business reporting that they provide to their users

• Implementing new EBS modules and customizing their applications to improve functionality

• Integrating a broad range of applications such as Salesforce.com with their EBS solution

However Oracle’s focus is now on the cloud and new functionality developed solely for EBS on-premises will be limited, so many business users are looking for new solutions.

SERVER INSTANCE TYPES

Oracle applications are memory intensive and this will affect performance. As a result we will select powerful server instances for these applications in order to deliver the perfor-mance required. Oracle or Red Hat Linux are the operating systems that we recommend on AWS. For larger implementa-tions we would tend to choose Red Hat and for smaller or more cost conscious implementations we would choose Oracle Linux.

For large environments the database tier is supporting a lot of transactional workloads and integration with many other applications. These intensive workloads will require larger AWS instances types. We recommend that you use the same version of the operating system that you used in house. We typically use one database server instance because of the requirements for direct storage attachmentbut the applica-tion server can be run on a single or on multiple instances.

Four criteria need to be considered when choosing storage for Oracle applications in the Performance, Durability & Availabili-ty, Cost and Scalability.

i) Performance - Amazon Provisioned IOPS allow users to configure storage size and performance. This gives users performance stability.

ii) Durability & Availability – Amazon offers users up to 11 9s of durability for their S3 storage with the ability to repli-cate data across regions

iii) Cost – users only pay for what they need with AWS so they don’t require a large capital expenditure for new storage hardware

iv) Scalability – The AWS cloud offers instant storage scalability (either up or down) as the needs of the business change over time.

Storage best practices for Oracle applications on AWS

i) We recommend use of the Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) feature which is a logical storage manage-ment system for your Oracle database

ii) You can increase redundancy and durability by distributing your entire dataset across multiple Elastic Block Storage volumes using the SAME (Stripe And Mirror Everything) feature of Oracle ASM

iii) Oracle ASM along with Provisioned IOPS EBS volumes from AWS can provide robust storage performance on AWS that will scale automatically

iv) We also implement Oracle Secure Backup which enables backups to be sent directly to Amazon S3 storage using the RMAN backup utility

Cloud security is a shared responsibility between the IaaS (Infrastructure as a Services) provider and the user. AWS has all the security certifications that you would expect from a global cloud provider but their responsibility for security only covers the infrastructure and hypervisor layers. The OS, application and data layers in the stack are the user’s responsibility or the responsibility of the user’s managed services partner e.g. Apps Associates.
