I’ve been asked to be featured in a Senior Column. Wow, I don’t consider myself a Senior (I do enjoy Senior discounts), but I guess I am a Senior, I’m 66. My daughter, Sharon, always tells me” Mom, sixty is the new forty”. So let’s say I’m 66 but i feel 46, so I dress and act as if I were actually 46.

The important thing is not the number but how you feel and act. This influences how you are viewed by others. Of course, good health and good genes are very important too; but you can do alot about how you look and feel. Four years ago I felt I was an old lady walking around with a cane. My knees had worn from me being overweight most of my life and my hypertension was uncontrollable. I went to the knee surgeon and he told me in no certain way, would he do the surgery unless I lost fifty pounds. So I left his office walking with my cane and went to work.

I lost the fifty pounds and then thirty more. I had the knee surgery and I am a new person now. As a bonus, my uncontrollable hypertension has disappeared. Losing the weight and having the surgery really changed my life. Like I said, I feel like I am in my forties and I can keep up with my thirty-something daughters.

I love Salsa dancing and fashion is my passion. I love reading books: self improvement, spiritual and novels. I do the treadmill three times a week and lift weights twice a week. I go into the office three to four days a week, just to keep my mind active and so I have to put my make-up on, do my hair and dress up. I meditate every day and write in my Grateful Journal” in which I write what I am thankful for each day. I also recently started taking art classes (an old passion of mine in my youth) and it has brought a new excitement into my life.

In conclusion, in order to act and feel young, I keep my weight down. I act and dress young and keep a positive and thankful attitude. I keep my mind motivated by reading and going to the office. I thank God every day. Most important, I do not let any opportunity to have fun, slip by me. When it comes to fun I do it now since at my age, time and good health are a gift.

An increasing number of people are now wanting to do their part to save the planet due to the worsening problems caused by global warming. Unfortunately, numerous people assume that going green is costly and time consuming. Read on to discover several immediate things you can do to get on on the path to living green.

Recycling is the top way to start. A lot of people continue to place glass and aluminum items in their normal garbage even though recycling is not that hard to do today. In the US, it's not hard to locate a trash service that offers glass and aluminum recycling choices. Many people still continue to discard these items even though recycling bins are not hard to find. It merely takes a few minutes to wash off the cans and bottles before placing them into the recycle bin.

Newspapers are another item that overburden our landfills. Virtually all people will merely take their daily paper and toss it in the garbage when they are done with it. But, there are many other uses that you can get out of your newsprint other than poring over it it. Did you know that you can keep your windows clean using newspa-pers? If you're tired of seeing small white fragments and streaks on your windowpanes after you clean them with paper towels and cleaner, try to use old newspapers instead. Several community groups run regular paper drives. Merely compilepile all of your old newspapers, put them in a stack, and see if the paper drive organizers will come to your location and pick them up.

Going Green Is So Much Simpler Than Most People Think by: Collin Rojas

Page 9: 4th of July issue

One more thing that could help you to start to live green is to begin walking a bit more. Lots of people routinely drive short distances merely to buy one thing at their local corner market. If you just walk to the store, not only could it take less time, because you won't have to locate a parking spot, but you will be saving money on gas and helping to save planet Earth by not burning those fuels.

If you wish to save even more on gas, take the chance to car pool when you can and only mow your lawn two times a month instead of weekly. A gorgeous lawn is good to have but skipping an additional week before you mow again shouldn't significantly affect it. Using a manual push mower like those more normally used many, many years ago will help to save the environment even more. Numerous hardware shops still carry this type of mower.

When people make up their mind to try green living, it's easy to make a few lifestyle modifications that will benefit our environment. Likewise, you can find lots of info all over the Internet on other ways to start living green, you only have to look for it.

Hurricane Preparedness...Be Ready

Kenneth was deployed in Iraq in 2006 and was stationed n Bagdad.

His first few months found him in the Green Zone checking IDs of people going in to the Green Zone.

Then he was assigned to the streets of Bagdad moving and cleaning for IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices).“We would look for places in the ground that had been tampered with, like new dirt or disturbance in the ground” stated Kenneth. “Another thing we were always looking for were snipers”.

“Most of the locals really appreciated that we were there. We had meals with local families and made friends with a lot of them. The Arabic name given to me was Kareem. This is how I was known by the locals” explained Kenneth.

His Lieutenant loved playing golf. He had a driver and balls delivered. They would go to a roof top and drive balls off the roof. While one would be “golfing”other soldiers would be on guard watching for snipers.

We would like to thank Kenneth for his service to our country.

Hurricane Preparedness...Be ReadyTom J. Thiel Korea

1951-52

Here s a story by Mr. Thiel. Christmas Eve 1951, a most interesting evening. We were still in that Chinese bunker, the "mansion" along the trail of a side road looking up to hill 747. Everyone was just certain that the Chinese would attack us on our "Christian" holiday. Shortly after full darkness set in, the Chaplin’s troop drove a 6-by truck up the main valley and stopped on the road about 100 yards or so behind our position. They brought with them a well amplified speaker system. The photo caption in 24th Forward reads: "Chaplains and officers of the 19th 'Rock of Chickamauga' Regiment caroled on Christmas Eve....Bitter cold did not dampen the celebrant's ardor." Soon they were vigorously singing Christmas carols for us grunts in the foxholes! My mind drifted back to family and friends, to Mass and to gifts. The last thing I wanted to be reminded of at that moment was that I was in Korea on Christmas Eve! And I yelled my displeasure as loud as I could and “suggested” they depart and leave us to ourselves. Others yelled their same displeasure. And none of us was too kind or polite either! I was sullen; I was mad! I'm Sorry. The carolers soon retreated, they probably had other places to go and grunts to sing to. Want to thank Tom and all the Korean War Veterans for their service to our country. You can find more on the Korean Veterans at http://cid169.kwva.org

The 2012 Leesburg Armed Forces Day Celebration was a very special event. Not only did it feature a parade and vendors, there was the dedication of the new Veteran's Memorial in Fountain Square and the arrival of Rolling Thunder's "Flame of Freedom". It is the first time it made a stop in Florida as it traveled across the country on its way to Washington DC.

This event included the dedication of the new 200 square foot memorial in Fountain Lake Park. The memorial took over a year to constuct and already features the names of over 7500 Lake, Sumter and Marion County veterans.

Makes one proud to be an American and extremely thankful for our men and women in the Armed Forces. Thank you for all you do.

Keeping Dogs in a Recession by Ian Nicholson

We have all done it, gone out shopping or seen something we like and we buy it disregarding the cost of keeping it and especially in a recession.

Why do we do it?

Because the urge to own what we like is greater than the urge to be sensible.

That is okay if it is an object we can stick in a shed or outhouse and forget it for a while , but if the object is a living breathing Dog then we are in trouble. That is all about commitment for the next ten to fifteen years.

“Oh no! I didn’t expect that. I’ll take it back,” you quickly retort. Your family disagrees and begs and pleads with you to keep it. eventually against your better judgement to give in.

Everyone is happy, you are happy because you made your family happy. Your family thinks you are great, but underlying this is a sneaking suspicion that you can only just afford the upkeep.

Anyway the years pass and your dog has grown into a large dog, along with a large appetite. Your family is also growing with the added expense that comes with having to buy more expensive clothes, food, equipment ect.

You have been able to just keep your head above water as far as money is concerned and everyone is happy. Then suddenly prices begin to rise and everyone including the government tells you that the country is in a recession and jobs may go. Your not unduly worried, because you know you job is relatively safe.

One morning you get a letter from your bank saying the mortgage repayments are being increased, your wife tells you she needs more money for the shopping, your dog is sick and you take him to the vet. He needs a scan costing over a thousand dollars. Your credit card is taking a bashing.

How are you going to pay your debts?

16 everythinglake.com

pups & friends

Page 17: 4th of July issue

You have to make a terrible decision:

Struggle on and hope things get better financially

Let your dog go and cut some of the expense in one go.

You know that the last decision is going to be unpopular and cause trouble in your family. It can even cause the break up of your marriage. Don’t make hasty decision without exploring all the possibilities. What can you do to cut the cost of keeping a dog? Here are some suggestions:

Prepare your own food.

Ask friends and family to help look after your dog when you go on holiday.

Don’t let your dog become obese. (Health and extra food issues)

Use alternative veterinary services like the PDSA(UK) and American Animal Hospital Association in the US.

Do an inventory of where your dogs main expenditure is like food, vets bills, kennelling, grooming, ect.

Try and find cheaper alternative sources for your dogs food without compromising on quality.

Stop buying tip bits for your dog like hide chews( they are expensive) look for alternative there are plenty about.

Stop buying expensive play toys and concentrate on cheaper alternatives.

Do not let dog food manufactures persuade you that you want their new product when your dog is doing okay on the old one.

What ever you decide if you are faced with this situation it takes great strength of character to keep your dog. The only way you can do this is to have the full backing of your family. Without their help and commitment you can have even more problems that just debt.

Remember there are organisations that can help you before making a rash decision. I hope you are never faced with this dilema because it can be heartbreaking.

The 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship took over Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills on May 15-18.

The favorite Methodist was top ranked when the championship started and the field of 41 schools rolled in. At the end Oglethorpe University cruised to its second national championship on Friday. They led wire to wire. Oglethorpe’s Anthony Maccaglia was the proud winner of the individual title.

“I was more focused on doing it for the team,” said Maccaglia, who had two 68s this week. “We came here as a team to win and we were able to do that. Winning medalist, that was just icing on the cake.”

My name is Megan. I’m the third child in my family.I just graduated from Mount Dora High School and also from Lake-Sumter Community College with myAssociates Degree.

I played volleyball and tennis on my high school teams. I love sports and staying active. I also love little kids and having fun.

One of my goals is to get my registered nursing degree. I love my family and my friends, but most of all I love helping people.

Being a teenager can be tough, but I’m so blessed for the opportunities I’ve had to grow and become who I am today.

I hope one day, when I’m old and gray, I can look back at my life and be able to say that I helped make the world a better place.

This summer, I will be turning sixteen years old! For my birthday, I get to go to New York City to see some Broadway shows. Then, I will spend the whole month of July at a prestigious musical theatre workshop called the Broadway Theatre Project. I really look forward to having the best summer ever before I become a Junior!

Wade Lopes18, Mt. Dora High School

Class of 2014

I will be a senior next year, I am looking forward to graduating and starting a career in film. I have been acting since I was 11 and am currently directing my first play, The Vampyre, with a local acting group, Keyhole Society Productions. I have been with this group since it started two years ago and had one of the starring roles in their first production, the very play I am directing now.

I am going to spend my summer working on plays and looking for employment. I also want to start applying to Universities in hopes of continuing working in film but more as a director rather than actor. Directing is my passion.

Hi, my name is Daniella. I just graduated from Altoona School and will be going to Mt. Dora Middle School next year. I love art and hope to become a renowned artist. My favorite thing to draw is Japanese anime. I’ve also taken a liking to drawing animals. This will be my third year going to two different camps: Mt. Dora Center for the Arts (MDCA) and LSCC Kids’ College. At MDCA, I hope to learn more amazing drawing techniques that will increase my talents. So far, we have been doing crafts related to China and Japan and learning their art cultures. I’ve also made a clay dragon and a clay bowl. Some of the courses I’m taking at Kids’ College are acting, art, archery (lots of A’s!) , Nintendo battle and my all time favorite, Let’s Play Ball! Nevertheless, I am also looking forward to the few weeks my Mom has given me to just chill out. Thanks Mom! I love you! During this time, I will mostly play video games, hang out with my friends and practice drawing. And what would the summer be without a few day trips to Busch Gardens? (We have fun passes – yeah!) I’m excited about entering middle school and meeting new teachers, but I need to overcome my fear of math, which is the Godzilla of all subjects! In the meantime, I’m going to have a great summer! Thanks for reading about my plans.

TAVARES— Grab a book and log on to your computer. A new series of “Summer Read Along” videos from Lake County Schools encourages students and parents to continue reading during the summer break while learning important reading strategies. This week the Curriculum and Professional Development departments at Lake County Schools unveiled the collaborative “Summer Read Along” project, which features teachers reading aloud 14 different books in videos available through the District website at www.lake.k12.fl.us/summerread. “For parents it models how teachers read out aloud and teach different reading strategies,” said Kimberly Natal, the K-5 English Language Arts Program Specialist in the Curriculum Department. Natal, along with Dale Delpit, Director of Curriculum, came up with the idea to help bring new attention to the importance of reading throughout the summer and to stress the skills needed to be a good reader, such as thinking out loud while reading and asking questions before, during and after reading. The group selected a stable of books targeting growing readers in grades K-3 using suggestions from Lake County teachers, such as the book of the month program at Round Lake Charter Elementary. “Mostly these books are award-winning, classic trade books that teachers consistently use in the classroom,” Natal said. “The read-along videos are quick and easy, and they help to extend the understanding of the book.” The idea was brought to life by a couple of Lake County Schools’ own outstanding storytellers, Julie Wienecke, Teacher at Groveland Elementary, and Valarie Rogers, Teacher at Grassy Lake Elementary. Their interpretations of the classic stories were filmed and edited by Jon Redding, Online Specialist in the Profes-sional Development Department. While it’s not necessary to have the book in hand while watching the read-along videos, it definitely helps the experience. All of the books are available at local libraries, as well as for purchase at online or local bookstores. “It benefits the student to have the book in hand,” Natal said. “Students can follow along with the words and it deepens the interaction.” In addition to the read-along videos, the “Summer Read Along” webpage at www.lake.k12.fl.us/summerread features additional activities that will enhance students’ study of the books and give them great opportunities for family fun over the summer break.

business of the month

Page 25: 4th of July issue

In 1997, after a terrible boarding experience with their own dogs, Marni decided to build the first luxury pet resort in South Florida. Tail End Pet Resort was a 15,000 square foot boarding, grooming and day care facility in Davie, FL. Tail End had a 120 dog capacity and was featured many times in the Sun Sentinel, was on the front page of the Miami Herald, was voted “Best Place to Pamper your Pet” by City Link Magazine, and was the first choice for several Miami Dolphin players and Miami celebrities. Marni and Paul sold the business in 2008 to a national pet boarding company.

The Green K9 opened in July 1, 2010 with a mission to help pet owners find the healthiest products for their pets and the environment,as well as offer a safe, clean and fun day care facility for dogs to exercise and socialize. As grew business, the need for a bigger facility became a pressing need. On June 1st 2012, the Green K9 moved to Mt Dora. The new facility offers:

DAY CAREWe provide an exciting day of supervised, off-leash group play. Dogs are temperament tested and play groups are organized by size and energy level. For safety reasons, harnesses are required for all dogs in day care. You can bring one, purchase one from us or rent one for a $1 a day.

BOARDINGOur indoor pet suites are the most spacious and comfortable suites you will find! All suites include the following: raised bed or couch, soft blanket, two daily feedings and all day play in the day care program. For dogs not suitable for group play, three private daily playtimes are included. We highly recommend that you bring your dog’s own food. Changing a dog’s diet suddenly can cause them stomach upset or unwillingness to eat.

The comfort, safety, health and happiness of our pet guests is our #1 priority!24 hour staff on site. Our spacious pet suites are the largest in town and comfortably accommodate multiple family pets. Our 1/2 acre, grass play yard and 1,500 sq. ft. indoor play room allow for continuous exercise for all of our pet guests. Our boarding rates include all day play in day care and medication administration.

We provide security and fire monitoring with smoke detectors. We are located less than 1 mile from two veterinary hospitals. Our HVAC system has fresh air returns and ultraviolet lights, which kills airborne bacteria and viruses.

They also host Pups on the Patio, which takes place every 1st Saturday of each month until September 1, 2012. The next Pups on the Patio is July 7th @ 6:00 pm.

Hurricane Preparedness...Be Ready

Two keys to weather safety are to prepare for the risks and to act on those preparations when alerted by emergency officials. These are essential pieces to the Weather-Ready Nation.

Refer to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) ready.gov/hurricanes for comprehensive information on hurricane preparedness at home and in your community.

Know if you live in an evacuation area. Assess your risks and know your home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind. Understand National Weather Service forecast products and especially the meaning of NWS watches and warnings. Keep a list of contact information for reference.

Local Emergency Management Office, County Law Enforcement, County Public Safety Fire/Rescue State, County and City/Town Government, Local Hospitals, Local Utilities, Local American Red Cross, Local TV Stations Local Radio Stations, Your Property Insurance Agent, Risk Analysis, Online hazard and vulnerability assessment tools are available to gather information about your risks.

Be Prepared...Tips To Help!

26 everythinglake.com

Page 27: 4th of July issue

Plan & Take Action-Everyone needs to be prepared for the unexpected. Your friends and family may not be together when disaster strikes. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children or parents are safe? You may have to evacuate or be confined to your home. What will you do if water, gas, electricity or phone services are shut off?

Supplies Kit-Put together a basic disaster supplies kit and consider storage locations for different situations. Help community members do the same.

Protect yourself and family with a Family Emergency Plan. Be sure to plan for locations away from home Business owners and site locations should create Workplace Plans. Make sure schools and daycares have School Emergency Plans. Pet owners should have plans to care for their animals. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention offer information on animal health impacts in evacuation shelters. Prepare your boat and be aware of marine safety if you are on or near the water.

Consider your protection options to decide whether to stay or evacuate your home if you are not ordered to evacuate. When waiting out a storm be careful, the danger may not be over yet...

Be alert for:Tornadoes – they are often spawned by hurricanes. The calm "eye" of the storm – it may seem like the storm is over, but after the eye passes, the winds will change direction and quickly return to hurricane force.

BE PREPARED & STAY SAFE!

Hurricane Preparedness...Be ReadyThai Sushi AmericaMy culinary taste buds took me to this charming Thai restaurant located in the heart of Eustis. “We combine Thai food, Sushi and American food into one enchanting experience” stated co owner Jason. “Each order is prepared with the freshest ingredients, natural herbs and spices with no MSG” explained Jason.

Thai Sushi America opened in 2010. They have been in the restaurant business for over ten years. Co-owner Jason runs the sushi bar and his wife Ann and co-owner runs the Thai side. The restaurant is elegantly decorated with far eastern décor.

“Most of our Thai recipes are from family recipes. Our Thai food is cooked with an American flare. Our sushi uses the highest quality fish. Our menu has a lot of vegan dishes” said Jason.

“The Jellybean Roll is one of our popular sushi items on the sushi menu” Jason said. This roll is made of eel roll, cream cheese, topped with tuna and escolar. The presentation was spectacular. The fish was fresh and the sushi has quickly become this writer’s favorite.

On the Thai side, I tried the Sweet Potato Puffs, the Crab Rangoon and the Pad-Woonsen.The Sweet Potato Puffs are filled with diced chicken, sweet potatoes and onions and served with a cucumber sauce. The puffs were light, crunchy and had great flavors. The Crab Rangoon, filled with crab meat and cream cheese were excellent. The Shrimp Pad-Woonsen, are made of glass noodles, eggs, celery, cabbage, onions and shrimp. The shrimp was cooked perfect and the combination of the whole dish was delicious and light.

These were just a very small sample of their menu. I can not wait to come back and try more. The food and service at Thai Susi America was excellent. Go unwind with them and let them take care of all your culinary needs with the help of their highly experienced service staff.

The crowd was huge and the corn even more plentiful this year at the Leesburg Corn Festival, which has become a local favorite.

There was plenty of Zellwood sweet corn which organizers say was double the amount from last year. Festival goers enjoyed live music while chowing down on some buttery goodness.

There were games and rides for the kids to enjoy as well.
