4.0 Welcome to the manual for the RSS channelThis manual explains the functions of the RSS Channel, including the specific characteristics of the channel and the

different options it offers.

This manual is part of InfoBoard® version 11.0. The content of the manual will be updated regularly. InfoBoard®.

4.1 Introduction to the Channel

RSS is a channel type which can be identified by its icon: . All channels can be assigned an individual title, making

it possible to distinguish between channels of the same type. This way it is possible to have 4 RSS channels with 4

individual titles. Only administrators can name and rename channels. The channel icon makes it possible to distinguish

between the different channel types.

The channels you have access to will appear in the menu “Edit channel” found in the left side on the InfoBoard®

administration page.

RSS is short for Really Simple Syndication. An RSS feed is like one piece of information which is continuously updated

automatically. In this way, RSS-feeds make it easy to keep an InfoBoard® updated as it is updated automatically via the

RSS feeds. Most news agencies and many large companies offer RSS feeds on their webpage.

An RSS channel consists of several RSS units. Each RSS unit contains an RSS feed. This means that if you want to display

an RSS feed from 3 different news agencies, you need to create 3 RSS units.

In a RSS channel it is possible to time control the display period for each unit/RSS feed:

• Set a start and end date for the display

• Set a start and end time for the display

• Choose between daily, weekly, monthly and annually display

4.2 RSS Channel PageEach channel has a channel page. The channel page contains a list of the units created in the particular channel.

[Figure 1 shows the channel page for an RSS channel and a list of units]

On the channel page you will find the following channel features:

Create a new unit

Shows a preview of how the specific channel will look on the InfoBoard®

Add the channel to your “Favorites“ - a shortcut will be created on the InfoBoard® administration page

4.2.1 What defines a unit?

An RSS unit is a time controlled unit, which contain a single RSS-feed.

[Figure 2 shows a unit as it appears on the channel page]

4.2.2 Create a new unit

To create a new spot, press on the “New” button , located to the left on the channel page. You are then asked to

specify a link and a rank for the link. Here after the date and time settings are determined.

[Figure 3 shows the characteristics of the unit you can determine]

Link: This is the link to the RSS-feed. Fig. 3 illustrates an example of an link to an RSS feed. Note: It is necessary to type

in “http://“ before the link.

Rank: Determines the rank of the RSS feeds. If you type in 1, it will always be the newest story that will be displayed

on the InfoBoard®. Note: There should theoretically always be typed 1 in rank, unless you want more than one RSS feed

from the same link. If you want more RSS feeds from the same link, you create multiple RSS unit with the same link and

enter different ranks, e.g. 1, 2, 3, which is the 3 latest stories.

Show time in sec.: Determines how long the unit will be shown on InfoBoard® before the next unit takes over.

Date: Determine which day(s) you want the unit to be displayed. Mark “Repetition” to get the option of an end date.

Mark “Never ending” and the unit will run all day, every day all year. There will not be an option to choose an end date

when you choose this.

Start and end time: Determines the start and end time of the display. Mark “All day” and the unit will run for 24 hours.

Repetition: Daily, weekly, monthly or yearly. When choosing one of these you also get the option to set an end date.

4.2.3 Active and inactive units

appear on the InfoBoard® screen. Inactive units are not included in the display, but can be activated by pressing the lamp

and they will be included in the display. In the same way active units can be inactivated.

Notice: if a unit is inactive (red) it will not be shown on the InfoBoard® even though it is set to a specific date or time.
