From t i m e t o t i m e equipment i s returned t o t h e Naval Observatory from t h e F lee t and from naval s ta t ions , which has been surveyed as u n f i t f o r use, Recently 12 soxtants wero surveyed as iaseless because t h e marks on the arcs had been p a r t i a l l y o r wholly ob l i t e r a t ed by t h e use of some improper kind of c leaning pas te t o pol i sh the sextants . In such a case it i s probable t h a t these instruments can be re-etched a t a reasonable pr ice , and rezdered again f i t f o r use.
This information i s of pa r t i cu la r importance a t t h i s t i m e and i s given pub l i c i ty so that sex tan ts un f i t f o r use may be returned t o t h e Naval Observatory where an e f f o r t w i l l be made t o have them res to red t o f i t condition.
