as the world’s “melting pot,” the sprawling country known as the united States is not just a single culture but the blending and co-existing of many. When you live here, you’ll explore what it truly means to be an american — in all its many forms. You may have visited before and seen the major landmarks, but if you want the true north american experience you have to go beyond the tourist sites. With Three W international you will live in our communities where you will make friends, go to school and learn the language. You will eat our food, laugh at our jokes and watch world events unfold from a uniquely american perspective.

NAtioNAl pArks

eDUCaTioncreativity is the ability to tackle and manipulate concepts in new and previously unthought of ways. but being creative is more than just being intelligent, it’s partially a product of one’s culture. north american culture, and especially its education, encourages individualism, problem-solving

and the skills necessary to address tomorrow’s problems in imaginative and innovative ways. a north american education will give you more than just facts and knowledge, it will teach you to collaborate with others, to think original thoughts and to be the kind of innovator that future employers are looking for.

CharaCTeriSTiCS oF aMeriCan CUlTUreThe american mind-set is sometimes hard to understand, and often contradictory to the culture you come from. by living and learning in the united States, you’ll understand the unspoken protocols and cultural preferences that are important in north america. for example, did you know that americans prefer a certain amount of

“personal space?” asking ‘how are you?’ is a simple greeting and not a question about your health. americans smile — a lot. and when dining out, a tip of 15-20 percent is usually expected. These are just some of the things you’ll learn during your time abroad.

The lanDSCaPeas the world’s third largest country, america offers a diverse and varied landscape. There are snow-capped mountains and tropical beaches, bustling metropolitan cities

and small farming communities. in each region you will discover distinct traditions, customs and dialects.

STYleWhile climate plays a part in how people dress, american dress is typically casual. denim jeans, sneakers and sweatshirts are common for teenagers.

aMeriCan FooDThere’s no better way to get to know someone than to share a meal. One of the best learning opportunities you’ll enjoy is dining together in your host family’s home or in a restaurant. While there are some foods common to america, such as hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza, there are also regional specialties. and since america is a blending of cultures from around the world, you’re likely to find dishes from every corner of the globe.

The arTSno matter where you come from, chances are you have heard american music and watched american television. The nation’s media and movie industries are popular worldwide. but when you live in the country, you’ll get a chance to explore america’s rich theatrical history, fine arts museums and diverse music scene as well.

sports

While the ultimate aim of high school is education, there are a host of little things that color the teenage experience -- things that may seem unfamiliar to foreign students. To begin with, american high schools tend to be large, and the experiences can be just as big. There is a strong sense of community and togetherness as well. from football games to school dances, shopping at the mall to meeting up with friends, interaction is key.

american students like to:

8Study together. not only is collaboration important in school, it is also an integral part of american business.

8attend sporting events. Supporting your school and cheering for your favorite college or professional team is a huge part of american life.

8attend concerts and music events.

8connect with friends on social media.

8go to the movies with friends.

8play a sport or participate in extracurricular activities.

8volunteer at a local charity. not only is this a fun thing for students to do, but community service is vital to college acceptance and even high school graduation.

8attend school dances. prom, homecoming and sweetheart are just some of the dances offered at american high schools. most dances are formal occasions and teens often attend them with a date.

being comfortable with all aspects of american life ensures the best chances for admission to the most competitive north american and canadian universities.

Students broadcast news every day; hence, it is very suitable for students who are interested in journalism. every class is 75 minutes long to emphasize every single subject to students. One day has 4 subjects and each subject is taken every other day. There are many ways for students to participate in classes such as lecturing, collaborative learning, cooperating studying for cases, internet research, team discussion, student presentation/work presentation, and simulation cases. This helps students to study independently, think forwardly, and express themselves proactively.

The midwest region is made up of a cluster of states around the five great lakes that border the u.S. and canada. european immigrants settled here in the 1800s in search of better farmland and access to the atlantic Ocean. Today, the midwest is a cultural crossroads made up of those first waves of Western europeans and many other nationalities that soon followed. midwesterners are known for being

very genuine, friendly and straight-forward. generally conservative, the people here value family, friends and hard work.

as america’s “heartland,” the midwest region is full of extremes. it’s a place of skyscrapers and grain silos, farms and factories. There are endless miles of flat farmland and major cosmopolitan cities such as chicago and detroit. What unites the region, despite its diversity, is a strong sense of character and the genuineness of people who don’t feel the need to be anyone other than exactly who they are.

british columbia, or bc, is a province located on canada’s west coast in the pacific northwest territory. While its capital city is victoria, the largest metropolitan area is vancouver. The coastal cities and certain valley regions boast a mild climate, making outdoor recreation and tourism a big part of life in bc. “Since I started high school I wanted to live for a period abroad and the opportunity came in 2009 when I travelled to Canada and attended Abbotsford Christian School. Everything was new for me and I enjoyed each moment. I was placed in an amazing host family and I’m so grateful for everything they did for me. At ACS, I felt very welcomed by the staff and the students. I attended Social Studies, Foods, Drama, Physical Education, Biology, Literature and English. All the classes were very nice and besides learning the subject’s content I also had the chance to improve my English in the process, which was one of my main objectives while in Canada. I could say Drama was my biggest challenge at ACS, because I had to face my shyness and ability to public speak, and in English, but the results were very rewarding. I also had activities outside the school, like going bowling in PE class, which I adored. I made Canadian, German and Asian friends and I still have contact with some today. I can say my time at ACS was

very blessed because I had the opportunity to make friends, have a new family, travel to awesome destinations and also study and improve my academic skills.” — isabela bento

What our students say

“The original plan was to attend The Rock School for just a year as a 16-year old international student from Brazil. However, I did not know how much the school would change and impact my life. Part of my my success in adapting so well to the school and the environment is credited to my extroverted personality and my want to get to know people. Part of it was also the group of students, alumni and faculty that welcomed and embraced me. I had my fair of challenges as a new student, but given my drive and my open-minded mentality, I was able to overcome all of them. Personally, time went a lot faster while I was involved as the captain of the high school soccer team. All the training and traveling we did, though exhausting, was all worth it. The time I got to spend with coaches and teammates is truly something I cherish. The academics during the school periods, incentive days, senior week and other activities really distinguish The Rock School from others. The sense of family and comradery at the school is something to be proud of. I owe a lot of who I have become to the staff, administration, and the student body. I came to Gainesville, FL with an open mind and positive attitude, and that in the end paid off immensely. The timing was perfect and I wouldn’t have changed a thing in both of my years as a student at The Rock School. Finally, one of the things I will always cherish was the award I was given at the annual Awards Ceremony. I was honored to be selected as the recipient of the Bob Carter Award for Outstanding Leadership. That was one of the highlights during my career at the school. To be seen by many as a leader and someone to follow is the legacy I sought after. I trust many more students, like myself, will want to take this opportunity and experience what the school has to offer.” — fernando da Silva – The rock School

“I first heard about The Rock School through some friends of mine that used to attend. After they told me about it, it sounded like a great school to go to. After talking it over with my parents I decided to attend The Rock. At first I was nervous moving to a different school, I didn’t know anybody yet. But, everybody at The Rock made it really easy to adapt, all the students came up to me and introduced themselves and asked about me. All the teachers and the administration made sure I was taken care of, and were always ready to answer my questions and help me with anything I needed. At The Rock you aren’t treated like just another student, the teachers truly care for you and are concerned with your learning, preparing you for your future. My experience at The Rock has been nothing but great.”—— ricardo bassit

“My name is Carla Fernandes, I live in Campinas in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and my youngest son, Pedro Fragoas Fernandes, 16 years old, has been a student at GRA for 3 semesters. My husband and I supported his own decision to study at GRA wholeheartedly, and we couldn’t be happier with the results that this big change represented to our family. It hurts that he is far from us and we miss him dearly, but to notice his evolution makes us incredibly glad!! He’s maturing as a young man, he’s more disciplined, focused and is in control of his own time and decisions. Apart from the practical results, such as the grades, he has shown good performance on sports and easy adaptation to everyday challenges, while living in a completely different environment from the one he was used to. Pedro plays soccer ever since he can remember and he loves it! He also practices basketball, wrestling....He is very interested in sports and GRA offers amazing facilities to our full-of-energy kids.

When classes restarted in 2013, I went to see the school with Pedro, but especially to personally meet all those that would look after my child for me so well... I call them Guardian Angels.

I got to see it all: Pedro’s dorm, his favorite places, teachers’ houses, their impeccable lawns, but what I liked the most was the people...Especially Angela! They are competent professionals as well as sweet and caring people...They are lovely....It is a true home for Pedro. He is happy and we are even happier by witnessing his achievements. He is already getting ready for college, under GRA’s supervision, of course!!”

Who we are

founded by anna and Jason Wang, Three W international has served schools since 1998. from its humble beginnings, Three W international has maintained one vision: to provide an international program that produces the best possible experience for students and schools. ever mindful of their goal, Three W international has seen tremendous growth in the number of students and schools it serves. Today, it has become an industry leader in the field of international student program management, representing over 80 schools in the united States and 10 in canada. although the number of students has increased, the philosophy and quality of service has never faltered. With the largest student success rate in the industry and unprecedented satisfaction of schools, Three W international bridges cultural boundaries and expands educational opportunities.

from the very beginning there were absolutes that this exchange must offer: quality schools, exceptional students and reliable host families. This combination resulted in several unique outcomes. Schools benefitted academically and financially. Students were exposed to a first-rate educational and cultural experience. and host families not only enjoyed a wonderful learning experience, they were compensated generously for their hospitality. The idea worked so well that by 2012, Three W international had 1,500 students studying in more than 80 u.S. schools.

The key to a successful international program is knowledge of the students and understanding their cultural and academic environments. We are heavily focused on this and invest our time and resources to further deepen our awareness.

Three W international’s unique process ensures your school’s international program success by managing the screening, application, educational and environmental process from beginning to end. Our implementation process is second to none - we are there to assist your school in program start-ups, admission, home-stay selections, parent communication, educational programs, and any other questions that arise.

Our primary objectives for the duration of a student’s enrollment include:

zcreating a positive experience for both our students and the academic institution

z Setting attainable goals for program implementation

zmobilizing the local faculty and providing them with the tools necessary for programmatic success

zmaking recommendations for the cultural integration of students into the school and community

Three W international’s results speak for themselves which is why we boast a program attrition rate of less than 1% and homestay repositions of less than 2%.
