1.4.1 ME 492 Bitirme Projesi
Topics for ME 492 Spring 2013
Mechanical Structures and Systems Projects
1. Foucault Pendulum
Suppose that someone put a pendulum above the North Pole and
sets it swinging in a simple arc. To someone directly above the
Pole and not turning with the earth, the pendulum would seem to
trace repeatedly an arc in the same plane while the earth rotated
slowly counter-clockwise below it. To someone on the earth,
however, the earth seems to be stationary, and the plane of the
pendulum's motion would seem to move slowly clockwise, viewed
from above. A full turn would be completed in 23 hours and 56
minutes. At different
latitudes, the period
would be different. Léon Foucault made the first experiment
that shows this phenomenon in 1851. The figure above shows
Foucault’s pendulum that is suspended from the dome of the
Panthéon in Paris. If the pendulum is freely suspended, its
amplitude would decay in time due to air drag. Thus, to
demonstrate the earth rotation all the time, the pendulum
should be powered through an oscillator, which ensures
constant amplitude motion without affecting its relative
rotation with respect to the earth.
In this project, the aim is to make design modifications on an existing Foucault Pendulum that will swing
in our library. The current design swings continuously with the help of an oscillator. However, the turning
rate is not constant. You will ensure constant turning rate of the pendulum.
2. Multiaxial Load Cell
A multiaxial load cell is a transducer which can measure the force
components in the 3 directions Fx, Fy, Fz and the 3 moment
components Mx, My and Mz.
The objective of this project is to design and manufacture a
multiaxial load cell. The load cell should be calibrated virtually with
Finite Element Analysis and should be optimized structurally for
maximum sensitivity. A calibration matrix should be calculated by
virtual and physical testing.
44
3. Chaotic Pendulum
For a dynamical system, if the system parameters and the initial
conditions are known, generally it is straightforward to predict the
motion in the future. However, some dynamical systems show
chaotic behavior, i.e., these
systems exhibit strong
sensitivity to initial conditions.
In that case, although these
systems are deterministic, it is
hard to predict their motion.
Your aim in this project is to design and construct a manually operated
chaotic pendulum. The designed system should be composed of at
least two links. Moreover, the system should display chaotic
oscillations for at least one minute.
4. 3-DOF Robotic Manipulator for Movements in X, Y, and Z
Human-machine interfaces (or haptic devices) require low inertia and
high bandwidth for safe interaction with humans. As parallel robots
outperform today's serial robots on several points like stiffness and
dynamics, they are also used for high performance haptic devices
(http://www.forcedimension.com/).
The goal of this project is to design and construct a 3-DOF miniature
robotic manipulator capable of providing movements in X, Y, and Z
(see Figure). A possible design could be based on parallel mechanism
but students are encouraged to come up with any ideas for the kinematic
structure. The developed robotic manipulator will be used as a finger
interface with force feedback.
5. Bionic Finger Equipped with Tactile Sensors
Functional substitution of a lost limb, such as a hand, is necessary for
persons with an amputation to perform daily life manipulations. Two key
characteristics of successful prosthetics are (1) intuitive control of
prostheses and (2) sensory feedback.
As a first step towards this goal, this project aims a bionic finger that could
be used in prosthesis (for more information: http://the-
scientist.com/2012/09/01/missing-touch/). Students will design and
construct a 3-DOF robotic finger and instrument it with tactile/pressure
sensors for contact detection.

6. Mechanical Watch Timing Machine
A good mechanical watch is accurate to within a couple of
seconds a day. However, with aging and other
environmental conditions, a mechanical watch may
consistently run faster or slower up to 30 seconds or more in
a day. In that case, the watch can be regulated by changing
the effective length of the balance spring. This is done by
rotating a lever on the balance spring.
In order to measure how many seconds a mechanical watch
gains or loses in a day, one can wait for one day and
compare it to an accurate watch or clock. Then, make a
correction by moving the regulating lever in the appropriate
direction and see how many seconds the watch gains or loses in a day after the adjustment. However, this
method is not time efficient. To speed up the regulation process, mechanical watch timing machines are
used. These machines simple sense each
"tick" of the watch. By measuring the
time between each tick very accurately,
the device can calculate how many
seconds the watch will gain or lose in a
day. In general, these devices are quite
large and expensive. Your aim in this
project is to design and construct a low
cost, accurate and compact mechanical
watch timing machine.
7. Roll Slitting and Rewinding Machine
When soft sheet materials like plastic films and paper are
manufactured, they are wound into wide rolls. However, to sell
these materials in reasonable widths, the wide rolls have to be
slitted and rewound into narrower rolls.
These operations are done on a roll slitting
and rewinding machine. Ideally, the
rewound rolls should be in perfect
cylindrical shape. However, sometimes
conically shaped rolls can be obtained
during the rewinding process. In that case,
these rolls should be rewound in a separate
machine to obtain cylindrical shape. Your aim is to design and construct a
rewinding machine that rewinds conically shaped rolls into cylindrical shape.

8. Modal Shaker
Vibration testing is done to determine the mode shapes, natural
frequencies and damping ratios of a system. Modal shaker is a device
that excites the system according to its amplified input signal. Several
input signals are available for modal testing, but the sine sweep and
random frequency vibration profiles are by far the most commonly
used signals.
The aim in this project is to design and construct a compact modal
shaker that is able be utilized for sine sweep up to 150 Hz with at least
0.5 Hz resolution. The shaker will be used to vibrate strings and
beams.
Thermal/Fluids Systems Projects
9. Test Setup for Nano-Fluids
Nano-fluids are colloidal
suspensions of relatively
higher conductivity nano-
particles and a base fluid.
They are considered as next
generation heat transfer fluids
by many researchers due to
the anomalous enhancement
observed in conductivity of nano-fluids with respect
to that of the base fluid. In this project a test setup to
characterize the convective heat transfer behavior of
nano-fluids will be designed and manufactured.
Internal forced convection through a pipe must be
considered and the convective heat transfer coefficient must be measured within reasonable uncertainty.
The setup will be assembled and it will be used to conduct sample experiments to measure the forced
convection heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids.
10. Instrumentation and Control of Wind Tunnel
Wind tunnels are widely used for testing thermal and flow behavior
of engineering systems, such as missiles, aircrafts, automobiles, heat
exchangers or computer heat sinks. In this project, instrumentation
and control of an existing small laboratory scale, wind tunnel is to
be designed and implemented so that controlled experiments can be
carried out. The wind tunnel should be controlled through a PC and
flow/thermal measurement experiments must be performed to
demonstrate the use of wind tunnel.

11. Design and Manufacturing of a Gas Turbine Blade
Gas turbines are widely used to
produce useful work based on a
thermodynamic cycle known as Brayton
cycle. Most common applications are
in power plants, civilian and military
aircraft engines. In the Brayton cycle,
fuel burnt in a combustor is ejected
towards blades positioned around a disk
connected to a shaft. As the ejected hot
gas rotates the blades and mechanical
work is produced as rotation of the
shaft. The optimization targets
maximizing the power generation, while thermal management and
mechanical strength of the blade are also considered. The design of
the blades will be re-visited briefly, considering the thermal and structural aspects of the design, and the
designed blade will then be manufactured.
12. Hybrid Solar-Thermal/PV Panel
One of the major global
problems is the
availability of sustainable
energy sources that has
minimal impact on our
eco system. Use of
renewable energy sources
constitute one of the
most widely accepted
solutions to the energy problem and solar energy is one of the
major resources that can be utilized to meet the need. In this
project you are expected to design and manufacture a hybrid
solar-thermal/PV collector for laboratory demonstration that
will provide electrical work and warm water. The
performance of the prototype will be tested and compared
with targeted performance.
48
13. Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Collector
To address the similar
problem indicated in the
previous project, this project
focuses on concentrating
solar power (CSP) systems
that are used to produce
electricity from solar thermal
energy. You are expected to
design and manufacture a modular laboratory scale CSP
collector test/demo unit that can be used in testing of various
solar coatings or components, and for various demonstration purposes. This semester, the design of the
system must be finalized and a prototype must be manufactured. The prototype will be tested by using
proper instrumentation and its performance will be compared with targeted performance.
14. Bulk Heating Processes for Materials Processing
Thermal processing techniques are widely used in materials processing. While the conventional
techniques rely on heating the entire work piece based on conduction and convection through an external
heat source, bulk heating processing techniques rely on creating internal heat generation locally. Through
proper selection of mould and composite material, these processing techniques enables bulk heating of the
material without heating of the mould and surrounding processing environment, and results in substantial
savings in time and energy. Bulk heating for composite matieral curing via induction heating that was
investigated; the processing technique will be finalized, by determining the materials and cure schedule
for a model material. The designed process will be implemented and the success of the implemeted
process recipe will be tested through qualitative inspection and quantitative characterization of the cured
work piece. Energy savings will be noted comparing with process through conventional techniques.
15. Design, Fabrication and Characterization of a MEMS-based Thermal Actuator
MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) technology is enabler for novel
sensors and actuators for a wide range of applications. In this project a
thermal actuator was designed for in-fluidic operations. Finite-element
method based models was developed for the design phase. Designed
micro-devices will be fabricated using
surface micromachining technology in
clean room. An optical setup will be
designed and built to characterize the
fabricated devices. Characterization
experiments will follow.

16. Test setup to measure the thermal conductivity of liquids
Although there are many tabulated data available for thermal properties of existing
liquids, characterization of properties for liquids is still a critical task for both design and
analysis of devices relying on various engineered liquids. In this project, you are expected
to design and manufacture a test setup to measure the thermal conductivity of nanofluids,
which are colloidal suspensions of nanoparticles in a base fluid. The device must have a
means of controlling temperature of the nanofluid tested so that temperature dependent
measurements are possible. Besides, it should be capable of measuring thermal
conductivity of nanofluids different base fluids such as ethylene glycol (EG) or water.
You are expected to determine the measurement accuracy and precision of the device both
theoretically and by testing the nanofluid and base fluid conductivities and comparing the
measurements with literature.
17. Phase Change Heat Transfer Test Setup
In this project, a modular test setup will be designed and
manufactured to characterize the boiling performance of
nanofluids, in conjunction with different surfaces that can be
used to enhance the boiling heat transfer rate. It is desired
to measure the boiling heat transfer coefficient, and
determine important parameters such as the number of
nucleation sites and
bubble departure
frequency. The utilization
of the test setup will be
demonstrated performing
measurements using
nanofluids and various
surfaces that might have
different levels of
roughness, micro-structures or special coatings.

1. Chassis Design for Boğaziçi University Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car
Boğaziçi University hydrogen fuel cell car (BUHAR) is
very energy efficient vehicle so that it can travel 1367 km
with 1 liter gasoline equivalent hydrogen fuel. In order to
have a better vehicle, its chassis should be improved in
many ways. Currently, it has two wheels in the front and
one wheel at the back. This configuration will not be
changed. However, a new chassis material may be
selected to make it lighter and stronger (currently it is
made of aluminum). A safe roll bar and an ergonomic
pilot seat will be designed. Optimum locations for the
electronic system, safety belt connection points and
chassis & shell connection points should be found. Overall
the chassis should conform to the safety regulations of the fuel cell vehicle race. The stress analysis of the
chassis should be made by using the finite element method. Once the new chassis design is completed, it
will be manufactured.

hydrogen fuel cell car (BUHAR) need to be improved.
The vehicle has two wheels in the front and one wheel at
the back. Currently, it has rear wheel steering and this
causes rollover problems. The vehicle should have front
wheel steering with a maximum turning diameter of 12
m. The braking system should be designed such that it
provides even braking torque on the two front wheels to
have stable deceleration performance. Before the race, the
vehicle’s brakes are tested by putting the vehicle on a
ramp. One should ensure that it will be stationary on this
ramp. Finally, drivetrain of the vehicle should be
improved so that the electric motor power is transferred
to the rear wheel with maximum efficiency.

3. Energy Harvester for Vehicle Suspensions
The shock absorber or damper is an
energy dissipating device that is used in
parallel with the suspension spring to
reduce the vibrations due to road
irregularities, vehicle acceleration and
braking. Generally, shock absorbers
contain oil, which is heated while the
vibrational energy is dissipated.
L. Zuo, B. Scully, J Shestani, Y. Zhou, Smart Materials & Structures, 19(4), 045003, 2010.
The aim of this project is to design and construct a prototype vehicle suspension system that can extract
vibrational energy and convert it to electrical energy.
4. Magnetic Tuned Mass Damper
External vibrations can harm the operation of
structures, machines, devices, etc. A tuned mass
damper (TMD) is a device consisting of a mass,
a spring, and a damper that is attached to a
system in order to reduce the vibrations of that
system. The natural frequency of the TMD is
tuned to a particular resonance frequency of the
system, so when the structure is excited at that
frequency the TMD will suppress the motion.
J. Bae, J. Hwang, J. Roh, J. Kim, M. Yi, J. Lim, Journal of Sound and Vibration, 331(26), 5669–5684, 2012
The aim in this project is to design and construct a magnetic TMD (see the links:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuCdZLQOrAw, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuTqX5YMGyk). The TMD
should be able to damp the vibrations of a steel beam. The stiffness and damping characteristics of the
TMD should be tunable.

5. Self-Balancing Device for Rotating Machinery
When there is unbalance in a rotating
machinery (turbine rotor, drum of a washing
machine, engine flywheel, etc.), noise and
vibrations can occur, which reduce the life of
shafts and bearings. If the rotating system is
planar, then static balancing and dynamic
balancing are equivalent. However, if the out-
of-plane thickness of the rotating system is
large, then dynamic balancing may be
required (see the figures on the left).
Your aim in this project is to design a self-
balancing system for unbalanced rotating
machinery. It should at least correct single-
plane unbalances.

6. Prosthetic Hand
Functional substitution of a lost limb, such as a hand, is
necessary for people with an amputation to perform daily life
manipulations.
Towards this goal, a bionic finger was developed last year. As
a continuation, the students will design and develop a 1-DOF
prosthetic hand for grasping objects. The hand will have 3
fingers (thumb, index, middle) which will be instrumented
with sensors for contact detection. Movement and force
output performance of the prosthetic hand should be similar to
the human hand.

7. Optimized Composite Structure for Gangway Pass
Gangway passes are used as a bridge to
access to a boat from the shore. An ideal
pass is stiff enough to carry heavy loads
safely, with minimal weight. To achieve
this goal, composite materials are used that
are made up of multiple-materials used in a
smart geometrical configuration. The goal
of this project is to design such a smart
geometrical configuration for a composite
gangway pass so that it has proper stiffness
with minimal weight.
8. Navigation Aid for the Visually Impaired
For the visually impaired students, navigating in the campus has
constant challenges. Researchers are working to change that by
developing vision, GPS or RFID-based mobility aid systems.
The goal of this project is to design and develop a cane handle
for communicating direction cues to the visually impaired
through tactile feedback. The students will design a 2-DOF
device that is providing fingertip skin stretch (shear feedback)
for directional cues (forward, back, left, right etc.). The students
will be interacting with GETEM (Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Görme
Engelliler Teknoloji ve Eğitim Laboratuvarı).

Thermal/Fluids Systems Projects
9. Temperature controlled magnetic stirrer
A magnetic stirrer is a laboratory equipment that is used to stir a fluid in a container
relying on magnetic forces. A rotating magnetic field is used to rotate a stir bar
dipped in a fluid that rotates and mixes the fluid. Once the stir bar is rotated, the
fluid is mixed or stirred. The device that is to be designed is expected to stir
different fluids with different viscosities within a given rpm range. Moreover,
while the stirrer is in operation, the temperature of the fluid must also be controlled.

10. Liquid microprocessor cooling
Thermal related problems are the leading cause of failure for
microprocessors. Liquid cooling systems has been
increasingly adopted for cooling of micro-processors due to
their improved performance and silent operation. The coolant
or working fluid used in the system have significant impact on
the performance of liquid cooling system. In this project, first
a liquid cooling system will be designed and then the coolant
used in the system will be optimized for the designed system.

11. Wind tunnel control and instrumentation
Wind tunnels are widely used for testing thermal and flow behavior of engineering systems, such as
missiles, aircrafts, automobiles, heat exchangers or heat sinks. In this project, instrumentation and control
of an operating laboratory scale, wind tunnel
located in the ME Laboratories in the ground
floor of New Hall is to be designed and
implemented so that controlled experiments can
be carried out. The wind tunnel should be
controlled through a PC and a flow/thermal
measurement experiments must be performed to
demonstrate the use of wind tunnel.

12. Heat engine based on organic Rankine cycle
Heat engines based on organic Rankine cycle are used for producing useful work from low temperature
heat sources as in the cases of solar/thermal or geothermal energy systems. These engines operate on the
same principles of a regular Rankine
cycle but as they rely on a lower
temperature heat source, refrigerants or
hydrocarbons are used as working fluid
rather than water/steam. In this project,
you are expected to design a small scale
heat engine working on the principles of
organic Rankine cycle that should be
operating with a concentrating solar
system.

13. Solar power tower with heliostat reflectors
Concentrating solar
energy systems rely on
concentrating solar
energy to a smaller area
to heat the working fluid
to high temperatures. Solar
power towers are a major
kind of concentrating solar
energy system. In these
systems, heliostats that are solar tracking mirrors that are used to reflect solar rays to a power tower
throughout the day. In this project you are expected to design a small solar power tower with a small
number of heliostats demonstrating how such systems work on a bench-top unit. sources: http://large.stanford.edu/publications/coal/references/patel2/ (left),

14. Solar desalination
source: http://solarcps.com/Desalination_Systems.htm source: http://desalination.edu.au/2013/08/desal-directions-august-2013/
With increasing population and diminishing sources
of clean water, access to clean water is considered as
one of the major challenges we must tackle in the
upcoming decades. Desalination plants are
considered as one of the solutions to the problem;
however, the energy required for these plants constitute a roadblock for their use. Solar desalination
systems offer a solution by using solar energy. In this project, a small scale prototype of an industrial
solar desalination plant is to be designed. This unit must operate with no external energy source, differ
from a solar powered desalination plant and should be able to produce fresh water from sea water
continuously.

15. Wave power
Sea or ocean waves constitute a great potential as an energy resource for replacing carbon based
resources. However, designing and building an efficient, economically feasible system is very
challenging as the structure converting the energy
stored in strong ocean waves must be built very
strong to survive strong these waves leading to a
significant initial cost. One of the solutions
considered for the challenge is building these
structures to shallower regions of concentrated wave
spots where the wave sizes are limited. In this
project, prototype that is capable harvesting sea
wave energy and produce electricity is to be
designed.

16. Human powered flying machine/glider
Redbull Flugtag is a competition where simple flying machines without engines, relying on human power
are used to take-off from a platform to “land” in the sea. The aim of the race is to fly the longest distance
over the sea. Therefore, the design of the
flying machine/glider is very critical and
should be optimized for its aerodynamic
performance, strength and weight. While the
ultimate goal is to design, manufacture and
participate in the Redbull Flagtag that takes
place in June 2014 (need to confirm the
event) in Caddebostan Istanbul, the objective
for this semester is design the machine/glider.
