Director’s Desk On the move again! Thank you all for the positive emails and comments about the new shopping bags, we really do appreciate your feedback and support. Just a reminder, feel free to send any of our state offices or Head Office an email. Please go to our web site for email addresses.
In February 06 Step into Life Head Office moved from first floor offices to bigger downstairs offices within Caulfield. In less than 18 months we are unfortunately on the ‘move’ again! Due to the terrific growth of each Franchise location and the growth of new Franchise locations we have had to move again. Our group is now 118 Franchises strong.
But this move is not meant to be repeated any time soon! We have moved to office / warehouse facilities in a suburb called Moorabbin in Melbourne. Wow, what a job! Having not had any experience in warehousing prior to this move and having to learn how to operate a forklift and pallets it has been a fun week – not! I must have crashed every wall and pallet and box at least once.
The need to move to bigger premises is obviously due to the support from you our valued clients - thank you.
On July 26th – 29
th saw the entire Step into Life group congregated at the
Sebel Resort in the Hawkesbury Valley, NSW for the annual Franchise Conference. It was a fantastic weekend and I am sure you have noticed your Trainer has some new training programs to punish you with, and a renewed spark. It is amazing how some networking with fellow Trainers and a bit of time to think about their business and their role as a trainer in a different light can have such a great impact.
We had some very funny moments. Apologies to Athena Liakopolous, Step into Life Camberwell for sharing this story but it is too funny to keep confidential. Athena found herself a little late for an outdoor group training segment and she was running to get to the field. However the pathway to the field is best gained by going over a walkway bridge which goes over a big pond on the left and a brown swamp on the right. Athena thought the swamp was sand and continued to run to get to the field! Yes, she thought she had more powers than the rest of us and could walk on water. We love you Athena! (see photo below)
…and now I’ll try the fishes and loaves trick At Conference we rolled out the new merchandise catalogue to all trainers and hence part of the reason for the move to bigger premises. We plan to increase our range and hold more stock in order to facilitate the needs of an ever growing Step into Life national client base. Please ask your trainer for the latest catalogue. The shopping cart is 99.9% complete with a few tweaks to be made based on feedback from Franchisees at Conference.
September will see better weather arrive in most states and you will notice your trainer upping the anti a little in order to have you lean and mean ready for summer.
All the best Forklift driver and Director Larry Cohen

Questions….. Where were you born? Waverley Private Hospital
What is your current profession? Test Strategist / Team Leader at ANZ
What sports have you been involved with during your life / best achievement? As a child, netball, gymnastics, ballet (does that count???). As an adult, basketball. Best achievement? Managing to play basketball for 20 years and still being really hopeless at it.
What is your favourite naughty treat when your instructors aren't looking? What isn’t? Potato chips and dip, chocolate (especially white chocolate), D’Lush chocolate biscuits…and I’ve just found these yummy gluten free cinnamon donuts!
What primary & secondary schools did you attend? Chartwell Primary School in Wellington, NZ, Mount View Primary in Glen Waverley, Glen Waverley High, and MacRobs (MacRobertson Girls’ High). I also spent a year at school in Japan where I went to Otsuma High School.
What is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you? This is a stupid question (well, ‘cos it’s hard to think of an answer…and to think of an answer that doesn’t offend anyone who I haven’t managed to think of in the 2 minutes I’ve spent writing this). Ummm…I’ll get back to you some time in the next few years ☺
What is your goal for the next 6 months - exercise or other? To try and get some work / life balance back…in other words, try not to do too many 60+ hour work weeks. If I can get that down I might actually be able to get to some more sessions and get some of my fitness back! Exercise wise I would like to try and regain some of the ground I lost after injuring my ankle in December.
Interests and Hobbies? Scrapbooking, reading, watching footy (GO HAWKS!!!) and basketball (Go Melbourne Tigers!), listening to music, talking…
What results have you seen since you started with Step into Life? I had seen really good results up until last December….things have been going downhill since then, although my ankle has been a lot better lately, so hopefully it won’t be long until I’m back using it fully again. I completed the Spring Into Shape Fun Runs last year – when I would have sworn that I would never, ever, EVER compete in a fun run in my life (by the way, the name is a total misnomer – they are NOT fun!), and I had lost about 15 kilos. I know I was heaps fitter, and was feeling better for it.

Jog Your Brain
Exercise can stimulate creativity that lasts for hours.
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN was a fitness buff centuries before it was cool. He swam daily in the Thames while living in London, wowing passersby with his moves. He was posthumously inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
MARIE AND PIERRE CURIE Using money from a wedding present, the Nobel Prize-winning duo bought bikes and took long, adventurous rides.
ALBERT EINSTEIN loved meandering walks around Munich. Later, he took up sailing. When the wind died down, he would take out his math notebook.
GARY KASPAROV is a gym rat and a mental giant. He has credited his physical fitness with boosting his chess prowess.
Fitness buffs of all professions have long known that the best way to unlock creativity is to go for a bike ride, run or swim. Now science is proving that eureka moments during exercise are more than mere anecdote. Stephen Ramocki, a marketing professor at Rhode Island College, found that a single aerobic workout is enough to kick the brains of college students into higher gear—and that the benefit lasts at least a couple of hours. To function optimally, each person's brain needs a physically fit body, Ramocki believes.
Creativity tends to be the result of a two-stage process, says R. Keith Sawyer, a psychologist at Washington University in St. Louis. The first stage is data gathering. That's when you're working hard to bone up on background material that you'll need to solve your problem. But the moment of insight tends to come when, having worked hard, you take time off for a change of pace.
Perhaps that's because during the preparation stage, the mind is so narrowly focused that it ignores random-seeming associations percolating in the subconscious. Yet creativity is, by definition, the process of making unexpected leaps. When you're deliberately working on a problem, such thoughts seem like distractions, so you tune them out. To free up the mind, Sawyer says, creative people tend to schedule "idle time" in which to do something…..
completely different—such as listening to music or taking a bike ride.
Sport psychologist Jeff Simons of California State University, East Bay, compares this to a meditative state. Essentially, it's a means of putting the analytical left brain on hold and giving supremacy to the sensing, intuitive right brain.
In the short term, exercise unlocks creativity, but in the long term, it does much more. Torrey Lindbo of Portland, Oregon, was abiology major whose track practices cut deeply into his study time. Luckily, he says, "it didn't take me long to realize that running pumped enough blood to my brain that I could focus. It increased the quality of my studying. Running is my NoDoz."
In part, it may truly be that simple. The brain needs huge amounts of energy. Imaging tests confirm that workouts flood the brain with blood and oxygen. Exercise also increases activity in the frontal lobe, the part of the brain involved in complex reasoning and attention.
Rats that exercise learn mazes faster than sedentary ones. The same goes for monkeys. When taught to use treadmills, they learn twice as fast, says Judy Cameron, a neuroscientist at Oregon Health and Science University. Their neurons grow new connections—useful protection if the brain needs rerouting in old age.
Biochemically, exercise stimulates the production of important brain chemicals, such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which encourages the growth of new nerve connections. That means exercise actually keeps the brain young, which may be one of the reasons that athletes have lower rates of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
The existence of such chemicals proves that the brain benefits of exercise aren't "just some voodoo thing" that works for some people but not others, says Thomas Schwenk, a professor of family medicine at the University of Michigan.
And if you want to stir those chemicals into new, creative patterns, all that may be required is a bit of old-fashioned sweat.

Healthy Recipe At Last - Guilt Free Eating!
Mexican Chicken Lasagne
spray canola or olive oil 400 g lean minced chicken 1 red capsicum, finely chopped 1 teaspoon finely chopped red chilli 440 g can red kidney beans, rinsed and drained 575 g jar tomato-based pasta sauce 400 g can crushed tomatoes 375 g fresh lasagne sheets 375 g low-fat ricotta cheese ½ cup grated reduced-fat cheese
Preheat the oven to moderate (180°C or 350°F). Spray a nonstick frying pan with oil and heat. Cook the mince over high heat for about 5 minutes, or until browned, using a wooden spoon to break up the lumps. Add the capsicum, chilli, beans, pasta sauce and tomatoes and stir to combine. Spray the base of a large lasagne dish lightly with oil. Cut the pasta sheets to size and arrange a layer of pasta over the base of the dish. Top with a thin layer of sauce. Continue layering the pasta and sauce, finishing with a layer of pasta. Spread the ricotta over the pasta, and sprinkle with the grated cheese. Bake for 30 minutes or until the lasagne begins to brown around the edges. Stand for 5 minutes before cutting into squares to serve.

SUSPENSION / MISSED CLASSES
Funny thing . . . if you want to enjoy the fitness benefits of the program, you actually have to BE AT THE
CLASS. We know there are sometimes unavoidable time conflicts, but we would much prefer you to make up a class than to miss a session entirely. Missed classes need to be made up within the same calendar month, or you will find yourself charged for the extra session. Please call your Trainer if you plan to attend a session other than the one for which you are booked. If you are going away, and require Suspension, please complete a Suspension form, or inform your Trainer in writing at least 24 hours prior to the Suspension period.
City to Surf Step into Life Member Fiona
Fairlie Raises the Most Amount of Money for Her
Charity!
Fiona Fairlie, a Step into Life member at Queens Park, raised in excess of $30,000 for charity in last month’s City to Surf. The funds will go towards The Shepard Centre which helped Fiona and her family after her son, Hamish, was diagnosed with a profound hearing loss when he was only eight months old. The centre has an early intervention program that teaches children who are hearing impaired to listen and speak using either the hearing they have, or with devices such as hearing aids and cochlear implants. Hamish, who is now 7, has a cochlear implant and he stayed with the centre until he was 5. He then went to a mainstream school which was the Fairlie’s goal. Fiona, as a result of the competition, won a trip to Hawaii which she then donated back to raise more funds for the foundation.
