Second Grade Math Enrichment Activities

School Supplies • Marcus wants to give $15 to help kids who need school supplies. He also wants to buy a

pair of shoes for $39. How much money will he have to save for both?• Marcus gets $5 a week for his allowance. He plans to save his allowance every week.

How many weeks does it take him to reach this goal to buy the supplies and the shoes?• Marcus remembers his sister’s birthday is next month. He sets a goal of saving $16 for

her gift. How many weeks does he have to save his allowance to reach this goal? Howmany weeks does he have to save his allowance for all three of his goals?

Multi-Step Markers Gia has 18 markers. Her teacher gives her three boxes and asks her to put an equal number of markers in each box. Anthony has 18 markers. His teacher wants him to put 3 markers in each box until he is out of markers. Before you figure out what the students should do, answer these questions: What is happening in these two situations? How are they similar? How are they different?

• Figure out how many markers Gia should put in each box. Show your work.• Then figure out how many boxes Anthony should fill with markers. Show your work.

Array Away! 1. Roll the die twice (see handout). The first number you roll tells how many rows to make inyour array. The second number you roll tells how many counters to put in each row of yourarray. Counters can be anything you have at your house such as beans, erasers, pennies,etc.2. Draw each array you make.3. For each array you make, record how many rows, how many counters in each row, andhow many counters in all.4. Write a repeated addition sentence and a multiplication sentence that represents yourarray.

Spin an Array Materials: spinner (handout), pencils, 1 paper clip, 4 different colored markers for each player, paper Number of Players: 2-4 Directions: 1. In turn, players spin the spinner twice to decide how many rows and columns will be inthe array. The first time the player spins will be the number of columns in the array. Thesecond time will be the number of rows.2. Player draws the array and records the addition equation onto paper.3. Play continues until each player has made 10 arrays.4. Once each player has created 10 arrays, each player will add up their sums from eacharray. The player with the highest sum wins.
