From our PresidentWelcome! It is good to have you with us for this exciting show.

CODS is well known for its great summer musicals at The Everyman and this year’s show continues in the line of those successes.

I have had the privilege of watching some of the production in rehearsal and I am filled with pleasurable anticipation of what lies ahead. I am delighted that you are here to share in the experience and I am confident that you are going to have a very enjoyable time.

With lots of actors, some of them very young, who have worked hard over the last few months for this moment, this has all the colour, movement, music and romance you could ask for. Let’s just sit back and enjoy ourselves!

Chris Lammiman

Chairman's Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Cheltenham Operatic & Dramatic Society’s production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Following last year’s hugely successful production of Oliver! – which was nominated for the NODA South West Award for Best Musical Production – we are delighted to be presenting this Disney classic. Based on the 1991 Oscar-winning Walt Disney film, our version of Beauty and the Beast contains all of the well-loved characters, the same delightful – and at times extremely powerful and dramatic – music and much more besides.

In the 12 months since Oliver!, we have produced two shows at the Playhouse Theatre, Calendar Girls and Little Shop of Horrors, both of which proved very popular with our audiences and our members. For 2013/14, we believe that we have put together an equally strong programme and I am delighted to announce that our future productions include the award winning musical, Avenue Q, Alan Bennett’s National Theatre version of The Wind in the Willows and a musical version of The Full Monty. There really is something for everyone and we hope to see you again soon.

CODS’ chosen charity for 2012 was the Cheltenham-based leukaemia charity LINC and, through the generosity of our audiences, we were proud to be able to present them with a cheque for £1000. This year, we are delighted to be supporting Age UK Gloucestershire and there will be collections after each of our performances.

Thank you for supporting Cheltenham Operatic and Dramatic Society. If you are sitting comfortably, then we will begin…

“Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a young prince lived in a shining castle…”

Jonathan Dyer, CODS Chairman

Choreographer Sara HarwoodSara trained in ballet, tap, modern and ballroom dance. Her teachers have included Arlene Phillips and Peggy Spencer. She was a dancer for many years with CODS. Sara has choreographed for The Playhouse Theatre, Gloucester Academy of Music & Performing Arts, Leckhampton Players, The Cotswold Savoyards & The Everyman Youth Theatre. Sara has been at the helm of choreography for many CODS productions including: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; Gigi; Hello, Dolly!; Me and My Girl; High Society; Calamity Jane; Singin’ in the Rain; Blitz!; Scrooge the Musical; Annie Get Your Gun; Mack and Mabel; West Side Story; The King & I; The Railway Children and The Wizard of Oz.

Director Jonathan DyerNearly 20 years after the opening of Disney's first stage venture, here we are with our own interpretation of what is now a classic. From the very beginning, we were keen that our production would be true to the Disney original whilst at the same time giving our audiences a spectacular Broadway musical in the best traditions of CODS. I hope that you feel we have succeeded in doing both.

Bringing the show to the stage has been hugely exciting but also technically challenging. Nothing in theatre happens by accident and I am extremely grateful to everyone involved in our production – both onstage and backstage – for the hard

work and commitment that has been required in producing this show. I am particularly indebted to both ‘Gillie’ and Sara for their support, patience and, above all, endless talent. This has been a team effort and, together, we hope that you are as enchanted by our story, as we are proud.

Musical Director Allan GillespieAllan studied music at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now Royal Northern), before embarking on a career in the Civil Service. He is currently a peripatetic music teacher at Cheltenham College, in addition to running his own music teaching business in partnership with his wife, Karen. Since joining CODS in 1979, Allan’s stage roles have included Dr Falke in Die Fledermaus and Steve in Paint Your Wagon. He has been MD for several CODS' productions including Die Fledermaus, Carousel, Crazy For You and The Wizard of Oz. He has also

appeared with The Cotswold Savoyards and Promenade Productions and conducted Candide, Into The Woods, Hot Mikado and several of the G & S operettas.

National Operatic & Dramatic AssociationCODS is affiliated to the National Operatic & Dramatic Association (NODA), which was formed in 1899 by amateur societies in the north-west of England for the purpose of bringing together members of amateur operatic

and dramatic groups for their mutual assistance and combined benefit.

Each year the Association holds national and regional conferences, together with competitions for poster and programme design. It runs a Summer School, with courses ranging from make-up design to stage management, giving NODA

members the opportunity to improve their craft. The Association also awards long service medals to those members who have given active and unpaid service over many years.

Today, the Association has around 2300 affiliated societies and over 2500 individual members throughout the UK and Northern Ireland. It is the only organisation of its kind devoted exclusively to the amateur stage and is entirely self-supporting.

In 1991, the original Walt Disney film Beauty and the Beast was the first animation to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Although it lost out to Silence of the Lambs, it did win two Oscars (Best Original Score and Best Original Song for Beauty and the Beast). The film also went on to become the first animation to win the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. However, it is believed that the catalyst for Disney turning Beauty and the Beast into their first stage venture was an article by a New York Times theatre critic describing the original animated version as the best musical of the year.

Following a Christmas try-out in Houston, Texas, Beauty and the Beast opened on Broadway on 18th April 1994 and ran until 29th July 2007 when it made way for The Little Mermaid. Its run of 5510 performances made it Broadway’s eighth-longest running musical. The West End production opened at London’s Dominion Theatre on April 29, 1997 and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 1998. It ran for almost 3 years, closing on December 11, 1999.

Doctor Who?If you were lucky enough to be in the audience of Gypsy, Oliver! or Calendar Girls in Cheltenham last year, you may be surprised to know that you have a member of the medical profession to thank for your evening of quality entertainment,

In 1890 the Hussars, who were in camp at Badgeworth, were among those who received an invitation to attend Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, Trial by Jury. The venue was to be The Assembly Rooms, High Street, Cheltenham. Some of the soldiers planned to travel by carriage on the evening, while younger members had arranged to ride in, leaving their horses in livery at The Plough Hotel.

Doctor George Bagot Ferguson, a former Cheltenham College boy, was the doctor at the helm of this maiden voyage. Messrs Cavendish House on The Promenade supplied the dresses for what was to be the debut performance of Doctor Ferguson’s music class. Before the group had set foot on the stage of the Assembly Rooms Dr Ferguson was already busy planning their second public production. This was to be Iolanthe at The Winter Gardens - Cheltenham’s answer to London’s Crystal Palace.

The Assembly Rooms were demolished in 1901 to make way for a bank and The Winter Gardens during the Second World War, as they were thought to be a possible target for the German air force. However, Doctor Ferguson’s music class, one hundred and twenty three years later, is still with us, alive and kicking in the shape of Cheltenham Operatic & Dramatic Society, fondly known as CODS.

It is hard to imagine Cheltenham without its premier theatre, The Everyman. Yet, shortly

after their debut, the founder members of CODS witnessed the famous Frank Matcham theatre being built. The theatre is believed to be the oldest surviving complete Frank Matcham theatre in the country. Doors opened on 1st October 1891. The theatre was known as The Opera House, being renamed The Everyman in 1960. Within five months, in February 1892, the music group was receiving excellent reviews for their production of Pirates of Penzance.

A fascinating publication has been written by Peter Arnold to cover the first 100 years of CODS. It is filled with rich detail and anecdotes of the evolution of Gloucestershire’s premier operatic & dramatic society. It shows as early as the 1930s that CODS members were taking full advantage of the direct rail link between London Paddington and Cheltenham St James station. Scenery used in professional London productions was transported in a specially adapted forty-five foot wagon. Horses and carts would transport the scenery from the theatre after the last Saturday night show back to St James station, often after the street lights had been extinguished at midnight. A similar operation continues today, but the scenery now arrives in an articulated lorry with a price tag of thousands of pounds.

The relationship between The Everyman and CODS continues to this day with their annual summer production being performed there. The winter and autumn shows take place at The Playhouse, which opened as a theatre in April 1945, having been an indoor swimming pool attached to the Bath Road Medical Baths.
