Repentance is a word commonly heard in the Church and we know that it is one of the first 4 principles and ordinances of the gospel as articulated in the 4 th Article of Faith. However, most missionaries would agree that it gets less attention than the other principles when Lesson 3 from Preach My Gospel is taught. Sometimes I wonder if we really understand how critical it is in the Plan of Salvation. President David O McKay stated, “ Every principle and ordinance of the gospel of Jesus Christ is significant and important ….but there is none more essential to the salvation of the human family than the divine and eternally operative principle of repentance.” It has been my experience as a bishop and as a member of a stake presidency that there are a host of myths surrounding repentance which cause confusion, despair, and frustration among members and investigators of the Church. Addressing some of those myths might bring hope and healing to some of your investigators. They include: Myth #1--- Complete repentance only requires that I feel sorry that I committed the sin. Repentance is a word commonly heard in the Church and we know that it is one of the first 4 principles and ordinances of the gospel as articulated in the 4th Article of Faith. They include:

Myth #1---Complete repentance only requires that I feel sorry that I committed the sin. This is obviously wrong as mentioned above because repentance is a series of steps, all of which have to be completed for true repentance to be manifested. Repentance can not be quick, superficial and hurried. It is a process that takes time.

Myth #2---Repentance is only needed by the most serious sinner. In Romans, we read that, “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” Since all of us have and will sin, every single one of us needs the principle of repentance in our lives. President Kimball has said, “There is a prevalent, perhaps subconscious, feeling that the Lord designed

repentance only for those who commit murder or adultery or theft or other heinous crimes. This is of course not so. If we are humble anddesirous of living the gospel we will come to think of repentance as applying to everything we do in life…..Repentance is for every soul who has not yet reached perfection.”

Myth #3---There is a “point of no return” where my sins are so bad, that I can not be forgiven any more. This is one of the most damning of the myths because it causes people to give up and assume that there is no hope for them. President Uchtdorf has said, “Christ came to save us. If we have taken a wrong course, the Atonement of Jesus Christ can give us the assurance that no sin is a “point of no return.”

Myth #4---When repenting, the only confession necessary is a confession to God. While it is true that every single one of us should confess to our Heavenly Father when we have sinned and begin the process of repentance, there are certain times when the confession must involve others. For example, confession would be appropriate to those you have offended. Very serious transgressions such as acts of immortality, serious violations of the law, and attacking the Church may require confession to a bishop or stake president.

Myth #5—Premeditated repentance is an acceptable and recognized form of repentance. This myth is laughable. The idea that we can sin with the premeditated expectation that we can simply take care of business by repenting after the sin has been committed makes a mockery of God and trivializes the great Atonement. Anyone who sins with the attitude reflected above does not really understand repentance of the plan of Salvation.

Myth #6—Repentance is a painful, punishing, dour, and frightening doctrine. Again those who feel this way about repentance don’t really understand it. Repentance is a doctrine of rescue by a lovingSavior. It is a kind, loving, helpful exhalting doctrine whichmakes it posible to live with our Heavenly Father again.

Myth #7—Repentance should be thought of as a one time event. True repentance should be thought of as a process rather than a single event. In many ways, it is more like a journey than a destination. It is some thing for which we have a need our entire lives.

Myth #8—Sin that keeps on recurring despite true effort to overcome it means that there is no hope of the sinner. This is one of the most malicious myths of all. Elder Neil Anderson has stated, “Sometimes in our repentance, in our daily effort to become more Christ-like, we find ourselves repeatedly struggling with the same difficulties. …..If you are striving and working to repent, you are in the process of repenting.”

Myth #9—The fact that I still remember my sins means my repentance isn’t complete yet. The process of healing after transgression takes time. The fact that you might still remember your sins doesn’t mean that they aren’t forgiven. Still you must forgive yourself and then trust that your loving Savior will do so also. (“though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow”, Isaiah)

Repentance truly is one of the most beautiful, loftiest and exalting principles of the gospel. May we as missionaries understand the true importance of this doctrine in our lives and the lives of those whom we teach. May we take time to TEACH them this doctrine is my prayer.

Carinosamente,

President Merril T Dayton

Creativity

Message From Hermana Dayton

27 de Septiembre de 2015El Clarín de El Faro

Creativity is cultivating wise THOUGHTS, prudent WORDS, and skillful

ACTIONS.

As we discussed in zone conference, creativity is activated by thoughts. We know that before God created the world that He determined He would create man and have the Savior be our Redeemer. After God conceived creation in his mind, He spoke the words. "God said Let us make man in our image." Genesis 1:26 Our Heavenly Father made us in His own image and gave each of us the capacity to creatively decide for ourselves what we will become in this life. We each have our agency to choose. The power of thoughts and words in the creative process explains why we are warned in the scriptures to watch every thought we think and every word that we speak.(Mosiah 4:30) "Death and life are in the power of the tongue" (proverbs 18:21)

One of my favorite scriptures is found in Proverbs 23:7, "A a man thinketh in his heart so is he".

Page 5: 27 September El Clarín

I am convinced that we become what we think about. In our home we have a quote painted on the wall of our office that reads, "It's not what you think you are, IT'S WHAT YOU THINK...YOU ARE! If our thoughts are on the Savior--on his character qualities and how we can become like him...we eventually become like the Savior. If our thoughts are on obtaining material items...we become materialistic. What we think about...we bring about. As we use intentional language, we can make our lives more joyfuland more meaningful

. As missionaries, here are some thoughts we might choose to think and then speak to make our days more enjoyable--I am a hard working, dedicated and obedient missionaryI am excited about the miracles I see every dayI am privileged to be involved in bringing others to ChristI am enjoying being a missionary in the Spain Barcelona missionI am Christlike and look for every opportunity to love and serve others

As missionaries we can ask ourselves these questions to determine if we are being creative--

--DoIspend timeto create and planstrategies to effectively present the Gospel?

--DoIseek to creatively motivate and inspire others and my companion?

Message From Hermana Dayton Cont.

27 de Septiembre de 2015El Clarín de El Faro

Page 6: 27 September El Clarín

--DoIlook atchallengesas opportunities for creative solutions?

--DoIovercomeboredom by finding new and challenging ways to do things?--Does lack of results motivatemeto try a new and better method?

--Do I study the scriptures and Preach my Gospel to creatively apply truths as I make decisions?

President Dayton and I love each of you very much. We came away from Zone Conference feeling so energized and gratefulby your goodness. How blessed we are to be learning and growing together as we magnify our call of representing the Savior in bringing others to Him. We love you and will continue to pray for each of you as you faithfully serveas valiant missionaries.

All our Love--

Bueno presidente ya

presidente, estos 2 últimos

meses han sido increíbles,

hemos visto la mano de

estoy súper agradecida

por la oportunidad de

con mi compi y la ayuda

de Dios en este paso y

camino súper importante.

Se con todo mi corazón

que esta es la obra del

ayudan a esta gran obra

a crecer. Gracias por

estar aquí en _______, por

darme la oportunidad de

trabajar duro y poder ver

este regalo.

We had a marvelous

week, and to top it off,

Juliana was baptized. We

had been making sure

we had everything

planned for a while, and

everything payed off. The

baptismal service was

magnificent. Her and her

family got there early

enough to get changed

and all ready. We took a

couple pictures with the

family, then started the

service. Juliana's dad

invited a ton of his friends,

and they all came! We

must have had at least 70

people in the chapel that

night, almost all of which

were non members. It

was incredible to see how

excited that family was

for the baptism, and how

eager they were to share

that experience with all of

their friends. The service

went very smoothly, and

Juliana's dad did the

ordinance perfectly. All of

the members were so

excited to see so many

people in the chapel,

and we plan to work with

that excitement.

So where to begin... This

week has been that of a

week indescribablely

good! We saw the

baptism of Juana, the

mom of our recent

convert Toni. After his

baptism he received the

priesthood and started

preparing to baptize his

mom. After 2 weeks he

was able to baptize his

own mother. It was a

baptism I will never forget.

This woman is incredible.

She started and finished

the Book of Mormon in 2

1/2 weeks and right now,

she just finished the pearl

of grace price and

starting doctrine and

covenants. This woman

was so prepared, and the

way we found her was

through that of the

members. They are such

a help to us missionaries

and the missionary work.

The Miracle of Baptism

It was great to have the

baptism of Maurizio. He

really is a good kid and he

wants to follow Christ. He is

now taking the right steps

to get closer to Christ and

God. The baptism had an

interesting start up, but

once it got started, it was

a great experience. It was

nice to see him really

happy after the baptism. I

have really enjoyed

working with him, just to

see how he has opened

up since I've been here.

Working with him has

made me chuckle,

because he is almost as

socially awkward as me.

It has been another great

week with another

baptism of Marilo, it would

be hard to take any credit

for the baptism of her. She

was prepared and we

only showed up.

Manuel´s baptism was

incredible!!!! The spirit was

so strong and it was so

neat to see how much he

has changed even just in

this last month. When we

have a desire, the Lord

will truly help us to

change. We are so

blessed to have the

knowledge of the

Atonement in our lives! I

loved Manuel´s baptism

so much... especially

because now he and

Johanna (a member and

also his girlfriend) are

preparing to get married

and then be in the

temple this next weekend

for baptisms for the dead

and then in a year for

their sealing!!!! It was so

neat to hear both of their

testimonies about how

this is the start to their

eternal family! I loved it!

Families are so important

and so important to our

heavenly Father. He

doesn´t want us to make

this journey alone... we

have each other and we

can keep learning and

growing together for

eternity! I am so grateful

for this blessing and gift

that we have!

The Miracle of Baptism

27 de Septiembre de 2015El Clarín de El Faro

This weekend we had the

blessing of seeing Pablo's

baptism. Pablo is a 9 year

old who has truly obtain a

testimony of both who his

Heavenly Father and Jesus

Christ are. We meet Pablo

by his mother, Miriam, who

has been less active for

many years, who recently

lost her older son and had

kept a distance from God.

After finding a member who

lived in the same pueblo as

her; she motivated her to

return and strengthen her

testimony once again. After

visiting them for several

times and their diligence to

come to church and

together working on their

testimony, Pablo decided

he wanted to be baptized.

On a very young age, he

made the choice to be

baptized and knowing how

important it was for him to

follow Christ example.

Miriam and Pablo have

both worked together and

help each other study the

scriptures and pray together

and individually. I'm so

grateful to have been part

of their process and seeing

how they come closer to

their Heavenly Father and

Jesus Christ.
