May I remind all parties that having achieved the 8 million FFS mark at Modikwa before, proves that we can, and we will reach that milestone and beyond – Let us journey on – we have already started. Our Values – safe work, Integrity, Care, Respect & Commitment – has been the key to our achievement of 1 000 000 Fatality Free Shifts and beyond.

FIVE days without water is just a drop in the bucket. But the ensuing crises was lost o n T h a b a C h w e u Municipality. They did send a construction team but in the end private firms and mines were there to fix the problem at the Water Works. The construction teams dug out pipes in the whole of Viljoen Street to do maintenance and replace broken pipes. Total devastation was inevitable. Poor communities, like those in Mashishing do not have the luxury of buying water. Luckily neighbours, churches and companies helped. In Lydenburg, those that have boreholes opened their houses to their neighbours. It is a great concern to see so much money going into the upkeep of the provincial capital, Mbombela (Nelspruit). We do realise that it is a different budget. But w h a t a b o u t T h a b a Chweu. ~ Michelle Boshoff

uring the water crisis of the past weeks in Mashishing, getting water was close to a life and Ddeath situation. Mashishing and Lydenburg were

without a drop of water for a minimum of five days, but probably more. The WIO (World Islamic Organisation) heads the Muslim Mashishing Church and heard about the water crisis. A Church member said that 40 000 to 50 000 litres of water was pumped for the duration of the crisis to help the community. They literally rescued thousands of Mashishing residents. These residents did not have a drop of water. The Church opened their facilities and never stopped providing and donating the water.

Helping neighbours and friends, including different communities is not a question of religion. The Mashishing Muslim Church was there in the community's hour of need.People flocked to the Church and no one was turned away. “We are very happy to have been able to help the community. We will continue to do it in the future. They are free to come to us for help in situations like these,” said a Church member. Residents came from as far as Ext 8, Nkandla, Blackberry and other residential areas. “We would like to thank the Almighty Lord for giving us this opportunity to serve the people in need”.

OUR municipality got it wrong once again. The whole town has been without water for up to five consecutive days last week (and longer in parts of Mashishing). According to rumours, one of the private contractors busy with new pipelines “accidentally” broke the main supply line from the dam into town. It is always someone on a back actor with no constant supervision. Back actor drivers

require constant supervision! They then battled with repairs for three days without getting it right. In the end, Glencore Lydenburg Smelter had to step in once again.Since nobody answers any telephones at the municipality and since there is no communication to residents, one cannot get the correct facts. Should you get someone to comment, you know that they are lying, because everyone tells you a different story. In the meantime residents and civic organisations are taking to repairing

un-driveable pot holed streets themselves. This all of course suits the municipality, because they can continue to sit on their arses, knowing that “someone will make a plan”, while they draw their full exorbitant salaries. We want to know: Why is the communication department not closed and its staff let go, since it is not operational?Has any payments been made to the contractor in question? Will he be held liable for the damage? How? What about the losses of businesses involved in bottled water purification, dry cleaning, plumbers costs etc etc? Residents are fed up. Mr. Mayor, you and your staff need to answer these questions.

thOn the 9 of February 2015 Thaba Chweu Municipality's disaster management and SAPS demolished shacks which were illegally erected next to extension six in Mashishing. The shacks most of which were

thbuilt on Sunday the 8 February 2015 were removed and some occupants voluntarily took their own structures down.Upon inspection of the people who had erected the shacks it was found that they were actually not poor people who have a desperate need for houses, but rather well to do people who seek to undermine and further embarrass council with this activity. Some German made cars and many other expensive vehicles could be seen late Sunday afternoon parked at the site and owners busy erecting the shacks which proves the point that these are not people who are in dire need of housing.

Hoorhierso en Outoppiein die kol

Demolition of Shacks illegally erectedThere has been a rise in these kinds of illegal land occupations in the past year some of which are in court currently.Council would once again like to send a strong message to any person(s) to respect the rule of law, to use proper application processes available to them at the Human Settlement office and to apply for houses or stands, to desist from illegally occupying council land and to respect the laws of the country. Failure of which will result in these individuals facing the full might of the law. The municipality has identified some well-known faces at the site which will make it easier to submit them to law enforcement. The municipality further discourages anyone from paying money to these individuals as they do not own the land and have no legal basis to take money in exchange for land from any citizen.

ANDRIES Botes also known as Barry was born in 1959 and lives in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga.Barry, a lover of wildlife, actively studied and participated in field trips studying wild plants, their uses and benefits to man.In 1994 Barry's life took on a different direction. Barry was shot in a car-jacking. A robber tried to steal Barry's car but panicked, pulled the trigger and ran without even taking the vehicle. The one bullet left Barry a Quadriplegic, paralyzed from the neck down. To date Barry cannot use his hands and types using sticks attached to his wrists. Recently he also started painting and paints with a brush in his mouth as a mouth artist.Barry has not lost his sense of humour, or become bitter after the accident. His work is not an account of the miseries of life and he will gladly inform anyone that he used to be two meters tall and inevitably

looked down when speaking to people. With Barry's new position sitting in a wheelchair he must look up at people and inevitably observe their nostrils and nose hairs. What is worse? Stand and count dandruff, or sit and smell armpits? It is two completely opposite angles at looking and viewing the same person and making unusual observations. Adding Barry's sense of humour makes for interesting reading!Barry finished school in 1976 at Athlone Boys High. He studied CIS at Wits but did not complete his studies. Ten years after the car-jacking he was divorced in 2003 and he has been supporting his only son.Barry's Standard 9 teacher, Mr Dobson, has to be the one person most influential and to whom the book can be dedicated for his hard work teaching Barry, a Afrikaans little boy, the English language. Barry

quickly admits, he still make mistakes but don't think Mr Dobson ever imagined he would inspire him to complete and publish a book!

The Timbavati Secrets explores the Pedi Dynasty, one of Africa's lesser known kingdoms. It is about the mysterious events that took place 180 years ago and how it affects the events that take place within the Timbavati half-moon. All the aircraft accidents in this small area make you question what was the cause of that fatal aircraft accident of former Mozambican President Samora Machel?

More about: The Timbavati SecretsThe book asks from where did the Timbavati White Lions, discovered thirty years ago in this area, mysteriously appear? It questions the Rain Princess, with her meteorologis t knowledge and her unquestioned ceremonies, claiming she cleanses the sky. What is her secret? And will this secret hidden for so long affect you?

Well known resident and business owner writes: I would like to lodge the following complaint with your company. A well known furniture branch in Lydenburg has been dumping loose refuse onto the pavement in Burger Street opposite the Post Office. The refuse is dumped irrespective of

Furniture Store clearly litters townthe day on which the municipality collects refuse. As the store refuses to place it in in refuse bags, the loose refuse spreads and within a short time litters the entire street. I have previously complained to the shop and they have denied that the refuse is from them. At the time the shop claimed that they burn their own refuse behind the shop. Firstly this denial was

a blatant lie and secondly burning of refuse within the town is illegal. The photos clearly implicates the store. Presumably your company ascribes to some standard of social responsibility. It would be appreciated if you could address the matter with the necessary urgency and in future ensure that you store employees uphold the laws and bylaws of this country.

Eish ESKOM!ESKOM released this to the media:We apologised to the nation for the inconvenience of the past few weeks due to load shedding. We communicated that for an extended period the power system is extremely constrained and vulnerable. With the system being tight, any abnormal event pushes us into load shedding With the reserve margin being low, we do not have enough capacity to meet demand, necessitating planned, controlled and rotational load shedding, to protect the power system from a total country-wide blackout We also said that over the last few months we have s e e n a s i g n i f i c a n t i n c r e a s e i n u n p l a n n e d maintenance/breakdowns on our plant (between 5000MW to 9000 MW that has had a compounding negative effect on power system reliability). As many businesses and industries reopened after the festive season, electricity demand increased. That coupled with the unavailability of some of our generating units meant that we had to go into load shedding on 9th January for the first time this year. The power system remains vulnerable, meaning that any extra load or faults in the system may necessitate load shedding. New generating capacity and other levers are needed in order to ease the pressure on the system. This summer has seen increased use of open cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) and other reserves to balance supply and demand. However there are constrains to the increased use. Summer is maintenance season at Eskom. We do planned maintenance in summer, when demand is lower, so that maximum capacity is available in winter. Maintenance season is usually from September to around mid-May, but some maintenance is done during winter. Eskom has an elaborate maintenance regime that should maintain the health of our generation fleet. Eskom has a codified maintenance philosophy in place. This philosophy is translated into a detailed plant specific plan (down to turbine, auxiliary etc.) . The required resources are matched with the plan. This results into a maintenance schedule that is asking for

2000MW of diesel capacity and an additional 3000MW more capacity than we have. Our philosophy of keeping the lights on at all costs superseded the maintenance philosophy and has put us into a very difficult position. Keeping the lights on program, has avoided load shedding in the last 7 years against all the odds managing an extremely low operating margin. There is a severe maintenance backlog, increasingly leading to unplanned outages (load losses). This accelerates the problem of not being able to recover on the maintenance backlog. Some of our running plants have partial load losses, because parts are worn out, and we do not have a time window to replace/ fix. There is a further risk of enduring load losses on the remaining units. Keeping the lights on philosophy has created a culture where proactive maintenance is less important. We have arrived at a point that does not allow us to ignore the health of our plants. Our reserve margin is so thin, that every incident creates a major systems issue and could also have safety implications for the plant. The massive usage of diesel helps to bridge the problem somewhat, but can't help the systemic healing and a shortage of capacity for the coming 3 years appears to be unavoidable. Eskom is preparing to minimise the effects of load-shedding.

Generation will focus on improving 5 KPIs (PCLF, Post Outage liability, UCLF, Slips and Trips). We will create a mechanism to transfer the capabilities of our best in class operators (Koeberg and Matimba) across the rest of the fleet. We will use Koeberg and Matimba as a blueprint to develop the required skills at station level. We will bring our suppliers on board to deliver the required maintenance at the best possible quality. We will create transparency on what additional spend on diesel will do to the country. We will create a load-shedding schedule that supports our people and economy to the best of our ability. We will prepare

our customers and our interfaces to deal with load shedding. We will continue to keep the public informed on the progress of our new build program and the implication on our system load. We will continue to pull all possible demand levers in collaboration with our customers and government. We will develop a health recovery plan and share progress as we go. We will develop together with NERSA and government a diesel burn policy.Eskom has a codified maintenance philosophy in place Typical Mean Time Between Outages (Main focus of scope) IR - 18 to 36 months (Boiler work) MGO - 6 years (LP turbines because they can't make 9 – 12 years) GO's - 9 to 12 years depending on the station (4 cylinders of the turbines) 6 Inspection General Overhaul Inspection Mini-General Overhaul General Overhaul Inspection. The past practice of postponing outages became unsustainable. Additional capacity of 3000 MW on top of 2000 MW of diesel is required. The unexpected outages at Majuba, Duvha and the diesel situation creates an unfavorable capacity outlook. We are likely to load shed on most days in the near future.

The internet is full of jokes and

cartoons about the Eskom crisis. But

these (right) are too close for comfort.

It’s not about which brand is the most popular or which car is technically better. It’s about the cars we’d actually spend our own money on or recommend to readers, friends and family. Welcome to TopCar’s Best Buy Guide.

1. VW Up! R133 500 – R140 500It’s still new to the market but thanks to its diminutive proportions, sporty demeanour and versatility, we think VW’s cheapest car will be a massively popular choice for first-time buyers. Factor in superior levels of standard safety kit, a five star euroNCAP rating and low running costs, and the Volkswagen Up is the most polished offering in the segment. VW’s only problem should be keeping up with demand. Our Pick: Move up! R140 500

2. Kia Picanto R136 995 – R158 995The Kia Picanto is undoubtedly one of the best-looking contenders in this segment but there’s more to this little Korean than meets the eye. Not only is it loaded with features such as aircon, USB, Bluetooth connectivity, heated mirrors and rake and height adjustable steering, it’s a blast to drive, too.Our Pick: 1.2 EX – R146 995

3. Hyundai Grand i10 R147 900 – R168 900We would rather stretch to the new Grand i10 – over the current i10 – as its fresher styling, comprehensive specification list (including ABS brakes, twin airbags as standard), roomier cabin, larger boot capacity and fun-to-drive nature improve upon the original recipe. A lengthy warranty and solid build quality add further value. Our Pick: 1.25 Motion – R147 900

4. Renault Sandero R129 900 – R169 900Second-generation Sandero builds on the strengths of its forebear – space, comfort and value – by adding a more sophisticated interior, contemporary body styling and the downsized and turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine from the Clio. Raised-ride, urban proof Stepway model adds to the appeal. Our Pick: Dynamique – R149 900Topcar.co.za

NEARLY half a million heavy-duty truck and public transport drivers don’t have valid drivers’ documents for South African roads. This shocking revelation, disclosed by the Road Traffic Management Corporation - has stunned Gauteng MEC for roads and transport Ismail Vadi. Vadi has joined senior RTMC officials in urging the public transport owners to comply with the law or face heavy punishment for defaulting.RTMC chief executive Makhosini Msibi said the corporation had found that nearly half-a-million professional drivers were operating without the proper documentation. “The RTMC is warning freight and public transport operators that it plans to hold them liable for the failure of their drivers to renew their professional drivers’ permits,” Msibi said.He said 433 973 expired professional driving permits were recorded on the national traffic information system on 31 December 2014 - representing 43.3 percent of all PDPs issued in South Africa.OPERATORS TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLEThe RTMC said the provinces that recorded the highest increase in the number of expired PDPs were Gauteng with 366 761 or 49.8 percent, KwaZulu-Natal recorded 201 628 or 43.6 percent, and Northern Cape had 32 549 or 42.5 percent.Msibi said: “Drivers are required to produce a medical fitness certificate and maintain a clean criminal record in order to obtain a professional driver’s permit.”He warned that the Road Traffic Act placed a duty on operators to exercise proper control over their drivers and to ensure compliance with the law. “It is the duty of the operator to ensure that both the driver and the vehicle are fit to be operating on a public road,” Msibi pointed out.He vowed that all traffic departments in the country would step up their vigilance and investigate all major accidents to establish the compliance level of operators.“This collaboration will be rolled out throughout the year, and unannounced inspections will be undertaken on operators’ premises to establish compliance levels.“Habitual overloading offenders will be identified and stringent measures will be taken against those found to be unwilling to comply with the law,” Msibi said.BOGUS MEDICAL CERTIFICATESRTMC spokesman Simon Zwane said it would also be investigating the possibility that some of the drivers were obtaining bogus medical certificates to use the roads. He mentioned that Swazi national Sanele Goodness May, who was charged with the killing of 24 people in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, in September 2013, did not have a PDP.Zwane said that formed part of the RTMC’s report and was used in the criminal docket. May pleaded guilty to all 31 charges in November and was jailed for eight years and 10 months.Isaac Wade Maruding, who was allegedly involved in a crash in Alberton in October, was

charged with four counts of culpable homicide and one count of reckless and negligent driving.Mike Goelst of Freighthaul Transport and Logistics Services urged truck drivers to comply with the law. He said it was up to the traffic department to enforce legislation. The Star / iol.motoring

ASTON Martin’s new Vantage GT3 special edition not only looks brutal but it’s taking very careful aim at the Porsche 911 GT3, hoping to be the most engaging driver’s car the British manufacturer has produced.

To transform the ageing sports car Aston has used the tried-and-tested motorsport path of adding more power and reducing weight. This comes courtesy of Aston’s 6.0-litre V12, tuned here to deliver 442kW.While, in total, Gaydon claims a kerbweight 100kg lower than a regular Vantage V12 S, down to 1565kg. And it’s mostly down to widespread use of carbonfibre for much of the bodywork, bumpers and bonnets.

All the tweaks turn what was already a rampantly fast sports coupe into a borderline supercar: Aston claims 0-100kph in 3.5sec and a top speed of 297kph. How much would they have loved to top 300kph?The motorsport team has been heavily involved in the new GT3 project, so there are numerous track-honed treats for the lucky few lining up to buy this car. They’ll get a lighter lithium battery, a titanium exhaust system and race-bred 19-inch black wheels. They’re shod in super-grippy Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber.Although this is a road-legal car, the chassis is given a thorough working-over, with uprated springs and dampers controlling the double wishbones at each end; the adaptive damping system adjusts in three steps from Normal, Sport and Track settings. There’s a wider track on both axles, providing a broader base for the tyres to work from. And that aero needs little explanation: the front splitter and rear wing are designed to key the car into the tarmac at speed.Aston Martin will show the new GT3 at the 2015 Geneva motor show. topcar.co.za

PARAMEDICS have sent out an important message to drivers: be alert when reversing your vehicle. This comes after several incidents in which paramedics have had to attend to motorists reversing into children. In one incident, the paramedics attended to a one-year-old who was fatally injured when a vehicle knocked him over while reversing.ER24 spokeswoman Chitra Bodasing said the incidents were attended to both at people’s homes and in public areas such as parking lots. Paramedic Cameron Horner attended to three incidents that involved toddlers being run over in recent weeks. He said it was important to make sure children were out of harm’s way at all times. “Put them in the vehicle first or make sure somebody is holding them a safe distance away from a moving vehicle.“If you are in an area where you know there are children, make sure you look around before reversing,” he said.Dr Vernon Wessels said injuries to an infant or toddler could vary from slight bruising to severe soft tissue injuries, fractures and internal organ injuries. Liver ruptures, pelvis fractures and head injuries were some of the life-threatening injuries children can sustain.“Injuries can lead to loss of blood, inability to breathe effectively and loss of life,” he warned. “Non-life-threatening injuries can lead to loss of function of the affected part, often permanently, amputatation of injured limbs and potential infection after the injury which could, in turn lead to various complications including threat to life.”Netcare spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said it was hard to get statistics on how often the incidents happened. “They’re reported as pedestrian accidents,” she said. “There have been a couple in parking lots, but there are no statistics.”Red Cross Children’s Hospital’s Professor Sebastian van As said they received at least 10 cases annually of children being reversed over. “It’s a big problem internationally as well, especially in the UK,” he said. “It has increased over seven times there.”Van As said the problem was worse now with people driving 4x4s. “People look into their mirrors but can’t see and the cars have big spaces underneath making it even harder.“The bottom-line main message is people who have small children must never reverse if they do not know where their children are,” he said.Psychologist and counsellor Sarah Cohen-Schwarz said children lost their trust for their parents in incidents where their parents were the cause of the accident. “Children often feel like it is their fault. The adults will have to rework their trust and apologise to their children. “They have to set safety rules with the children so they feel safe,” she said.Cohen-Schwarz said the incidents were extremely traumatising. She said when children died as a result of these incidents, the guilt of the driver of the vehicle was enormous and that person required professional intervention. “Older children are more aware of the situation, but younger children need the adults to be aware.“After the event, if the adult or the children are not getting back to their normal self within four to six weeks, it is important they see a professional because the issues are not being resolved,” she said.Cohen-Schwarz said children’s ability to adapt could also help ease the process of healing. “They need a great deal of comforting, they need the adults to acknowledge the incidents and their feelings about it and also to be reassured that something like that will never happen again,” she said. What to do if you find yourself in an incident where someone has been reversed into:First ensure your safety. The vehicle needs to be switched off and prevented from further movement.Try not to move the injured person unnecessarily as this may cause further injury. However, if the person is in danger or unable to breathe, sufficient movement to remove the person from danger or to open the airway should be done as carefully as possible.Control visible bleeding by direct pressure on the wound with a clean dressing or piece of cloth.Do not give the person anything to drink until professional medical help has arrived. The Star /iol.motoring

THE downward trend in the fuel price over the past seven months has reversed sharply in February. The Automobile Association's analysis of unaudited mid-month fuel price data issued by the Central Energy Fund shows that international fuel prices have risen by more than 20 percent since the last week of January, while a spike in the rand/dollar exchange rate put extra pressure on domestic fuel prices. The price of crude oil fell from $100 (R1168) a barrel in July 2014 to $53 (R619) by the end of the year; despite a decline in the value of the rand against the dollar, the price of 95-octane petrol in Gauteng tumbled from a peak of R14.33 in August to the current R10.31, the lowest price since September 2011 - a drop of close to 40 percent.ROCK BOTTOM?However, the AA has warned that unless the price of crude drops back substantially and the value of the rand recovers as well, South African motorists will be looking at a March price increase for petrol of about 68 cents a litre, with diesel and illuminating paraffin up by approximately 45 and 48 cents a litre respectively. An AA spokesman said: "It's too early to tell whether the sudden ride in fuel prices is merely due to a volatile market, or a sign that we have hit the bottom of the cycle."So be careful before you commit the money you've been saving over the past few months to other expenses - you could be paying R11 a litre for petrol in a weeks time.”iol.motoring

The MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in Mpumalanga, Refilwe Mtshweni warns the communities against illegal connections of electricity.Mtshweni says the illegal connections have an adverse effect in the delivery of basic services such as water, sanitation, and community lighting. She says this reduces the supply of power to the Water Treatment Plants, Reservoirs; Waste Water Treatment plants and it affects delivery of water. She says the

stability of electricity networks is also affected and contributes to revenue loss to both Eskom and Local Municipalities which leads to the exponential increase of electricity tariffs. Losses are currently estimated at R1.5 billion a year to municipalities and contribute to the high electricity debt to Eskom by Local Municipalities as much of the electricity consumed is currently unaccounted for.

Mtshweni says the major risk of i l l e g a l connections is o

poor quality of supply of electricity that is experienced by a number of communities and which leads to unplanned power outages. “Communities are exposed to live electricity wires and this leads to a loss of lives and livestock. Electricity expansion becomes more expensive due to illegal connections”, she added.Mtshweni says both government and Eskom are working hard to reduce illegal connections, by using the following methods: Installing tamper-proof technologies such as secured pre-paid meters, working with law enforcement agencies to strengthen the legal framework and investigate and prosecute electricity criminals.
