child and forming strong, effective working relationships with parents in a family based

environment.

We very much hope that this prospectus gives you a flavour of this as it is the starting point

of your contact with our school community.

NOTES AND QUESTIONS

22

Every school is required to refer their concerns to the Children's Social Care Services

Department. While we will seek to discuss these concerns with the family and where

possible seek agreement to making the referral, this will only be done where such

discussion and agreement seeking will not place a child at increased risk of significant

harm. This procedure is intended to protect children from abuse. When we refer a concern

about a pupil to the Children's Social Care Services Department we are not accusing the

parents/carers of abuse, but requesting that further enquiries take place and that any

necessary help and support is provided.

We welcome parents to discuss any issues which may arise regarding school. We hope

that any problems may be resolved through this informal approach. In the event that this is

unsuccessful there is a formal complaints procedure. Should any parent wish to make a

complaint, a copy of the complaints procedure is available from school and actions must be

carried out in line with the guidance within this policy.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Kingsway Primary School, where we provide continuity

of education for children aged between five and eleven years inclusive. In the academic

year when children are eleven they generally transfer to Kirkby College or Ashfield School.

We aim to provide the best possible education for all our children to enable them to realise

their full potential. Through our broad and balanced curriculum and out-of-hours activities,

children are able to maximise their different talents and skills. We aim to give children a

sense of confidence in their own abilities and to encourage them to be independent and

responsible.

To achieve this we create a safe, caring and stimulating learning environment where our

children are motivated, confident and enjoy being at school. We value our children as

individuals and believe that this enables them to develop a positive self-image, self-

discipline and respect for others. We believe in celebrating achievements and providing our

children with happy memories of their time at Kingsway.

We are very fortunate with our location of our school as our traditional two storey red brick

building is surrounded by a large playground and extensive sports field. The school has two

large halls, a separate dining room and kitchen (school dinners are cooked on site), a

library, a computing room and music room. We also have a secure outdoor play facility, with

a canopy, for our youngest pupils. Our most recent addition has been the development of

three new classrooms and a group room to provide addition space for our growing school.

I am extremely proud of the children's achievements. Sports teams compete in a wide range

of local competitions and activities helping the children to develop a strong, positive

approach to teamwork.

A strong partnership between home and school is vital to our success and we encourage

parents/carers to become involved in all aspects of school life. We believe that by working

together we provide your child with the best possible opportunities.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to visit the school or have any

questions.

We strive to provide what all our children deserve: the best possible education. We work together to meet the needs of all our children. We give praise and encouragement and recognise each other's achievements and encourage and welcome the participation of parents/carers in all aspects of school life.

Aims

As a school community we work to ensure that our children:

Feel safe, happy and enjoy learning.

Are respected and valued.

Uniform is worn at Kingsway to develop a sense of pride in being a member of the King-

sway School community. School uniform can be ordered by completing an order form and

returning it to the school office.

Please ensure that your child wears sensible shoes for school and that all items of clothing

are clearly named.

In addition all children will need a PE bag, swimming bag and school book bag. These are

available from school.

Please ensure that your child has his/her P.E. Kit in school at all times. You will be

informed when your child's P.E. lessons are but as we often have sports coaches in school

and changes in the weather, days may vary.

All children require slip-on black plimsolls for indoor wear and sturdy training shoes or

football boots for outdoor wear. Shin pads are essential for football and hockey sessions.

Swimming costume/trunks and towel (named please) are required on swimming days.

No jewellery should be worn in school other than small studs. If your child has pierced

ears, studs must be removed by the child for PE and swimming.

Our children are able to bring water to keep in their classrooms to drink during the day.

Water bottles are available to buy from the School Office. We ask that the children take

their bottles home at the end of the day to wash and refill.

It is very important that all children attend school regularly in order to make good progress

but if your child is unwell he/she should not be sent to school. You are expected to inform

the school of an absence as soon as possible so that an authorised absence can be

recorded. A reason given orally by the child on their return to school is NOT acceptable.

The school will contact parents concerning a child’s absence if a reason has not been

given to the office.

Under no circumstances may children leave school alone during school hours.

If it is unavoidable and parents have to collect children during the school day to go to the

doctor, dentist etc, they must first report to the school office and sign their child out. The

child will then be collected from the classroom by a member of staff. On returning to school

the parent will need to sign the child back in.

The school closely monitors the attendance of each child and register checks are made by

the local authority to identify any children whose attendance is causing concern. We will

inform parents of their child’s attendance percentage on a termly basis.

Rewards for good attendance include weekly attendance tickets, class 100% rewards,

termly 100% certificates and yearly 100% certificate and prize draw.

The law requires that once a child is on the school's register, they should be sent to school

every day that it is open. There is no right to time off for holidays and frequent absences

negatively impacts on your child’s learning.

Just two weeks absence in a year would result in your children having an attendance of

less than 95%. Over the period of primary education two weeks absence each year means

that your child would miss 14 weeks of school. This is more than a whole term and

consequently we would expect their attainment and progress by the end of year 6 to be

affected.

Changes to the regulations from the beginning of September 2013 made clear that head

teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional

circumstances and that penalties may apply. More details are available from school.

At Kingsway we are very proud of our partnership between home and school and the way we all work together to ensure every child reaches their full potential. The Home-School Agreement is designed to strengthen the link by providing guidelines and expectations for us all to achieve. PUPIL I will: Take care of my school, town and local community. Wear my school uniform as it makes me look smart and proud to be part of the Kingsway School Team. Work hard at school to achieve ‘Kingsway Quality’. Behave well in school and treat other people as I would like to be treated. Come to school on time every day. If I am late, I will miss the start of important lessons. Always tell somebody if there is anything that makes me feel worried or unhappy because how I feel can make a difference to how I learn.

PARENT/CARER I will: Encourage my child to take care of and respect the school and the local environment. Support the school by encouraging my child to wear the correct school uniform. It helps

my child to belong and feel proud of the Kingsway Team. Support and encourage my child to complete all home learning activities. This could be

reading, learning spellings or other topic related activities. Attend Parents’ Evenings in order to discuss the progress of my child and how I feel

they are achieving. Support the school to encourage positive behaviour. Send my child to school on time every day. Education is important and ‘Every Day

Counts.’ KINGSWAY PRIMARY SCHOOL We will: Encourage all our children to achieve their full potential through setting high aspirations

and to take pride in their achievements. Respect and value all our children as individuals. Provide opportunities for our children to learn and develop both in and out of school. Hold Parent’s Evenings and opportunities to talk about your children and the progress

they are making. Start the school day at 8.55am and provide a safe, friendly and caring environment for

all our children. Listen to everyone’s views and concerns about school and home.

The School catchment area includes from the centre to the south of Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

Children from outside the catchment area can be accommodated if spaces remain in the

year group once all in-catchment area children have been accommodated.

Our PAN (Pupil Admission Number) had now been increased from 45 to 60 children.

Starting school for the first time in Reception (Foundation Stage 2)

September 2020

Children will be admitted full-time at the beginning of the academic year in which they will

be 5 years old. Therefore all children who are 5 years old between 1st September 2015

and 31st August 2016 will be admitted full-time to school in September 2020.

Admissions to Kingsway Primary School is managed by the Local Authority. If you wish your child to attend our school, please contact the Local Authority to apply. If your child is due to start school in the new academic year in which they are 5, the Local Authority will notify you how to complete the application on line. Our staff are available to help if you require any support or advice. For admissions other than at the start of the academic year, applications are through the local authority. In the event of over subscription, the following criteria will be applied, in priority order, to decide which applications will be granted once places have first been allocated to pupils who have either an education, health and care plan or a statement of special educational needs which names the school:

Children who are looked after. Children who live in the catchment area and at the time of admission, will have a brother or sister attending the school. Other children who live in the catchment area. Other children who live outside the catchment area. In the event of over-subscription within any criterion, preference will normally be given to children who live nearest the school as the crow flies. Guidance on all the above processes and additional information can be found via http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/education/school-admissions/apply-for-a-school-place Contact details for Admissions: 0300 500 8080

As a school we have chosen to support your child’s attendance. Although we are not

obliged to do so, we have taken the decision that medicine which has been prescribed by

a doctor may be sent to school if it is absolutely necessary for the child to receive a

lunchtime dose. Only the amount sufficient for the day's consumption should be sent and

this must be clearly labelled with name and dosage. Please do not send a full bottle of

medicine to school. Medicine forms are available from the office and need to be signed as

permission to administer the dose to the child. Please DO NOT give medication to your

child to keep in school themselves.

Asthma inhalers must be available in school at all times and clearly named. EpiPens

provided for severe allergic reactions must also be in school and will be kept in names

medipacs.

If there are any changes to your child's medical condition, please keep us informed. This is

reassuring for your child and will enable us to provide the appropriate care and support.

We keep in regular contact with home, both formally and informally. Class teachers, who

remain with their class group throughout the school year, play a very important part in

ensuring that every pupil is learning well and feels settled and secure. Teachers send a

newsletter to parents of children in their class in the autumn, spring and summer,

highlighting the areas of the curriculum to be covered: this helps parents to understand

what is expected of their children and to support their learning. A regular school newsletter

is a further important means of communication and newsletters are also available via the

school website. Children have a home-school or reading diary in which comments from

home can be made. This forms a valuable means of regular communication between home

and school.

There are parent consultation evenings in the Autumn and Spring Terms, and a written

report is sent to parents annually. Parents are welcome to come in to talk to teachers or

visit the school. We do ask parents who have a specific concern to contact school and

arrange a mutually convenient time to meet so that discussions can be given the

appropriate time needed.

Parents are encouraged and welcomed to help in school. Anyone with a particular interest

or talent in any school activity is most welcome to contact the school if they would like to

help. We currently have parents visiting regularly to assist with reading, art, sport and

drama. All activities are under the overall guidance of the teaching staff.

We offer school meals which are freshly prepared on the premises and served in our Dining

Hall. Menus are available and displayed in the Main School entrance and Dining Hall

window.

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are able to receive free school meals through the

universal entitlement.

Children who bring packed lunches usually eat them in the Hall. Glass bottles, fizzy or hot

drinks are not allowed for safety reasons.

Our Midday Team support the children and encourage them to eat well and behave

appropriately. Certificates, stickers promote good behaviour and encourage healthy eating.

We have themed lunches linked to the curriculum and special events e.g. Bonfire Night, Chil-

dren in Need and Seaside Lunch.

Children are allowed to bring a healthy snack to eat at break time.

Alternatively we run a morning 'Break Club' for children in Year 1- Year 6. They are able to

buy from a choice of healthy options. This is very popular and our children enjoy eating

healthily, socialising with friends, making their own decisions and learning the value of mon-

ey. Prices are displayed in the Dining Hall window and information is sent home.

Once your child reaches five, his or her weight, height, hearing and sight are checked by

the school nurse and their general health is discussed with you.

The School Nurse visits regularly and if you need to seek advice, she can be contacted

through speaking to a member of the School Office Staff.

Any child who becomes ill in school will be cared for and comforted until you can be

contacted. We will need your telephone numbers and numbers of other emergency

contacts in school. You will need to ensure that these are always kept up to date.

Collective worship is a legal requirement in all publically funded schools. At Kingsway this

place daily, at 10.10 a.m. They are usually conducted by a member of the school staff,

often with the active involvement of the children. Collective Worship is often a story, talk or

drama with a song and time for reflection.

We believe that every child should have an opportunity to offer their ideas about the

school. Our children are keen to express their views and participate in surveys about

school, discussions and are often keen to share their ideas and thoughts with staff on a

daily basis. Our School Council, meets regularly to discuss ways to improve school life.

The whole school is involved and the council is chaired and managed by Year 6, who take

on many different roles.

Message from School Council

On behalf of Kingsway’s School Council, we would like to welcome you to our friendly,

hardworking and caring school.

We respect others and appreciate that everyone is unique and that we are all special in our

own way.

We believe Kingsway is a great team, where we work together to encourage everyone to

achieve their full potential.

Our School Council gives us a voice and we feel listened to and respected by all our

teachers. Our School Council has been developing for eleven years, and we believe it is a

strong and successful as all pupils are included. Each idea is valued and discussed.

We would like our legacy to be:

We are all a team and work better together

Kingsway Primary School Governing Body

All Governors have equal status, however they are appointed.

We have many roles within the school but the main ones include:

To provide strategic direction for The School.

To act as a `critical friend' to the School, its staff & the Head Teacher.

To challenge & ensure accountability in terms of the standards achieved & the quality of the education provided for the children.

As a 'critical friend' we try to ask useful questions in order to gain a greater understanding of the school and to create an environment in which continuous improvements can be made.

The Governing Body:

Is involved in staff appointments

Agrees the annual school budget

Monitors and reviews aims, objectives, policies, targets and priorities.

A vital part of the Governing body's role is to support, challenge and monitor how effective the school is. We evaluate this based on documentation and reports received at regular meetings, in addition to gaining information from our own visits to the school.

We encourage children to understand and empathise with the problems of those in the

wider community and the world. We support a number of charities often chosen by the

children themselves. Over the past years we have supported many charities including:

Comic Relief, Children in Need, Sports Relief, Macmillan Cancer Care, Family Care,

NSPCC, Barbardos, Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and Framework.

As our focus is that everyone should reach their full potential children's progress is

constantly monitored and assessed and careful records are kept. Occasionally we find that

a child does not make the progress we expect. If this were the case parents would be

consulted and appropriate steps are taken to support the child.

For some children an Individual Education Plan may be made with individual targets and

review dates. The plan may include ideas to help parents to support their child at home.

Outside agencies such as Local Authority support teachers, Educational Psychologists,

Speech and Language Therapists or Behaviour specialists may be called upon for extra

support. After further consultation with parents the Local Authority (LA) may have to make

a statutory assessment based on specialist advice. The LA may then provide an

Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan). This describes all of the child’s needs and

the special help that should be provided and combines information and involvement of a

variety of people. See the school website for the full policy and further information.

Parents will always be consulted and kept fully informed at every stage once we have

identified that their child could benefit from some extra help. This could be for educational,

personal or social needs.

More able children may have extension activities and opportunities assigned to them,

relating to the core work of the curriculum. Teachers use clearly focussed questioning to

further challenge able children. There are opportunities for talented children to develop

skills through extra-curricular activities, sports teams, music tuition and after-school clubs.

Each year group has an opportunity to learn through first hand experience during

educational visits. These visits, which may be to museums, heritage sites, nature reserves

or the local area, give the children encouragement to develop observational, problem -

solving and information collecting skills. Supporting our ethos of all the children working

together we also have whole school visits which create shared experiences and

memories. The visits enrich the curriculum work carried out in the classroom.

There are also several opportunities for

children to take part in residential visits from

year 4 onwards. This allows the children to try

outdoor and adventurous activities such as

hiking, team building, gorge walking,

abseiling, rock climbing, caving and zip wire.

We see residential visits as great

opportunities for personal development and

the acquisition of key skills, which support

children’s progress in a range of ways. It is an

additional part of the all round package we

want to offer our pupils.

There is a strong bond between our local community and school. In particular we have

links to Kirkby-in-Ashfield Rotary Club, taking part in activities which raise funds for local

and national charity initiatives. We also invite the local community to join us for events in

school, such as Year 5’s presentation to the Kirkby-in-Ashfield Royal British Legion for

Remembrance Day.

We celebrate Harvest, Christmas and Easter with the parish community, in St Thomas’

Church and the school takes part in activities the Church at other times throughout the

year.

The broad and balanced curriculum will stimulate your child to acquire knowledge and

develop individual skills.

Children’s achievements are celebrated and everyone enjoys success and praise regularly

during their time in school. We encourage children to become independent and confident in

both their work and social development.

Currently the school is organised into fourteen classes. The children are taught by their

own class teacher in mixed ability classes. In each class is a fully qualified teacher who is

regularly accompanied by a fully qualified teaching assistant.

Every classroom is fully furnished and equipped with high quality learning resources. The

class teacher and all school staff will get to know your child very well and will be pleased to

involve you in their life at school. Children make progress at their own rates and in their

own ways. It is important to value them as individuals and to provide learning opportunities

that will build on their strengths and overcome their weaknesses. The curriculum is broad

and balanced and provides for the academic, moral, physical, creative and personal and

social development of every child.

We seek the highest standards of attainment for all our children. We also value the breadth

of the curriculum that we provide. We aim to foster creativity in our children, and to help

them become independent learners. Above all, we believe in making learning fun.

Our school curriculum is underpinned by the values that we hold dear at our school. The

curriculum is the means by which the school achieves its objective of educating children in

the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need in order to lead fulfilling lives in the

culturally diverse society which is modern Britain today.

We believe that children must;

Become involved with things which interest them

Be encouraged to work collaboratively

Make progress and be challenged in each area of learn-

ing

Be encouraged to think and act for themselves,

become independent and take increasing

responsibility.

We aim to ensure that all children enjoy their introduction to school life and feel happy and

confident in a stimulating and secure environment.

Parents and children are invited into school for four visits in the term prior to their start

date, with one of these dates including lunch. These are valuable opportunities for the

children to meet their class teacher, make new friends and become familiar with their new

surroundings. There will also be a meeting for all new parents, where there will be an

opportunity to meet staff and find out more about school routines and expectations.

We have a range of activities and events taking place throughout the school year and we

would welcome you to join with us. Events are included in our school newsletters which are

posted each month on our website.

The Foundation Stage makes a crucial contribution to children's early development and

such as listening, speaking, concentrating, persistence and learning to work and

co-operate with others.

The areas of learning and development include:

Our school's curriculum is all the planned activities that

we organise in order to promote learning, personal

growth and development. As well as encompassing the

formal requirements of the National Curriculum, it also

includes the various extra-curricular activities that the

school organises in order to enrich the children's

experience. In addition to the 'hidden curriculum', what

the children learn from the way they are treated and

expected to behave, our long term plans for each class

are based on the National Curriculum framework for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, the

EYFS Framework and guidance from the DfE relating to SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and

Cultural development) and promoting British values. It is enhanced through the delivery of a

number of creativity weeks and days throughout the year. We want children to grow into

positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others whilst at the same

time developing their knowledge and skills, in order to achieve their true potential.

This is taught in accordance with the guidelines approved by the Governing Body. There is

a structured programme of sex education taught within the context of the PSHCE

curriculum. Some aspects are included in the science curriculum. Details of the content and

teaching materials are available to parents on request. A specific unit of work is given to

Year 6 by school staff . Parents are consulted prior to their child starting the

programme.

In the summer term of years 2 and 6, the children carry out the required Standard

Assessment Tasks and Tests (SATs). For children in Year 2 the class teacher assesses

each child's development in speaking and listening, reading and writing, mathematics,

grammar, punctuation and spelling and science. In addition each child undertakes a test in

reading, writing, spelling, mathematics and a grammar, spelling and punctuation test at

year 6. Parents are informed of how their child has done at the end of the Summer Term as

part of their child’s annual report. Teacher assessment is ongoing on a daily basis and is

used to identify next steps in learning for all children in order to secure learning progress.
