Wendy Nicklin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Accreditation Can-ada have extended her sincerest congratulations to Premier Homecare Services for their participation in the Qmentum accreditation program.

Nicklin thanked Premier Homecare Services for it’s “leadership and for demon-strating your ongoing commitment to quality by integrating accreditation into your improvement program.”

Premier Homecare Services received ‘Accreditation with Commendation’ follow-ing a rigorous on site survey.

Premier Homecare Services went through an evaluation process which started with a comprehensive self assessment and concluded with an on-site survey conducted by Accreditation surveyors.

Accreditation Canada is an independent, not-for-profit organization that sets standards for quality and safety in health/home care and accredits health orga-nizations in Canada and around the world.

“We are very pleased to have received this extraordinary distinction” says Gael Hepworth, co-owner of Premier Homecare Services Etobicoke with her hus-band Gary.

“This outstanding achievement demonstrates the commitment that our care-givers have for our client’s overall well being and safety.” says Gary Hepworth, co-owner of Premier Homecare Services Etobicoke.

Accreditation Canada surveyors commented that caregivers are “happy with Premier Homecare Services and are proud to work for the organization.” This shone through when the same surveyors interviewed Premier Homecare Ser-vices clients.

Premier Homecare Services Etobicoke has been in business since 2010. Gary & Gael Hepworth knew they wanted to run their business in Etobicoke to give back to the community where they’ve lived for 15+ years. Gael also has first-hand experience as the primary caregiver for both her parents.

Gael explains that “accreditation instills added trust in her company and staff, and assures clients that we are being monitored and held to very high stan-dards”. It’s quite an accomplishment and one that the Hepworth’s don’t hesitate to boast about.

Clients consistently expressed to surveyors that they are very satisfied with the care they are receiving and the providers that come into their home. Clients felt extremely supported toward independence no matter where home is.

All services are completely customized to the client, who is matched with a caregiver or personal support worker based on personality, language, cultural background and their needs. Caregivers and support workers are bonded and fully insured.

If you would like to learn more about Premier Homecare Services, please contact Gary or Gael directly at 416-623-8229 or visit their website www.premieretobicoke.com.

Many of the Kingsway’s celebrated restaurants and street vendors will be serv-ing delicious samples of international cuisines. An Outdoor Fresh Market and the Dairy Farmers of Canada Hands on Kitchen are among the many attractions that continue to draw over 200,000 people to the festival each year. The fes-tival benefits not only the community but also local businesses and charities. Businesses will be showcasing their products on the street and offering sales to draw in more customers, thereby giving businesses additional exposure. The Taste also gives back, supporting local charities, including the Annual Pancake Breakfast with proceeds this year going to the Dorothy Ley Hospice program. With the Kingsway’s strong English influences both in Food and Architecture, the English theme has been added to the 2013 Taste of the Kingsway. This theme al-lows patrons to embrace and acknowledge the neighbourhoods strong English Roots. Englishmen Robert Home Smith, a resident of Etobicoke a century ago, largely developed the Kingsway. Smith envisioned the Kingsway as an affluent neighbourhood with an English design, calling it “a little bit of England far from England”. Let’s celebrate the Kingsway’s origins by playing the part; come to the Taste dressed up like royalty! The Taste also celebrates the 40th Anniversary of the Kingsway BIA with a ‘Now and Then’ tent to commemorate the area’s long-standing history and showcase how the Kingsway has evolved over the years. The Etobicoke Historical Society will be on hand to answer your questions about the Kingsway and its rich his-tory. Visit the tent to view the showcase of photos capturing the Kingsway’s finest moment.

The Kingsway BIA would like to thank all of the dedicated volunteers and spon-sors who help make this event possible. When attending the Taste this Septem-ber, avoid the hassle of trying to find parking and leave your car at home. Take the TTC to Royal York Station where the Taste is conveniently located. Please note: the hours of the Taste of the Kingsway festival this year have been extend-ed on Friday and Saturday night until 10 p.m. The festival operates: Friday, Sep-tember 6th from 6:00p.m. to 10:00p.m., Saturday, September 7th from 11:00a.m. - 10:00p.m., and Sunday, September 8th from 11:00a.m. - 6:00p.m.

Don’t miss out on this food and entertainment extravaganza. Come out and get a ‘taste’ of what the Kingsway community has to offer and have a flavourful, fun time! Admission is free. Check out the Kingsway BIA website for an up to date schedule of events at www.kingswaybia.ca.

The man I never seemed to find time for, had all along planned for me to take over his practice. He felt, that I would carry on with the same attention to detail for his clients as he had done for so many years. Thankfully, his family helped me do just that!

It is because I have this tremendous re-spect for both of these wonderful men, and a strong belief in the best practices this industry has to offer, I will endeavor to continue to offer the most advanced technology this industry has to offer and ensure our staff is continuously trained by experts in this industry.

We, as the new owners, of Lens Design are not new in the neighbourhood. Beaulieu Vision Care has been in the Kingsway for over 35 years. Now with the addition of the custom fitted medi-cal contact lens practice, we offer a complete eye care regime.

Today, with the many safe and convenient choices of ready to wear contact lens-es, it is likely you will find the right ones for you. Lens Design has a large selec-tion in stock and because not all lenses are right for everyone….we can custom fit them for your specific needs.

Striving for Excellence is our motto. To ensure we do this, we use the best frame products from companies like; Oliver people, JFR, BOZ, CHANEL, TOM FORD just to name a few, and with the best labs for lenses, ZIES, NIKON,ESSELOR, ALDEN, CENTOR AND NELTER, BLENCHARD. CARDINAL.

But we don’t stop there. We are obsessed with taking accurate measurements, and applying our best experience, knowledge and care, at no extra charge. This is how we ensure that we make each vision device, glasses or contacts perfect for you.

Operating in the Kingsway for over 35 years, you can be assured of our experi-enced staff who understand the needs of their clients to ensure complete satis-faction. After all, we want to see you again!

On Friday, September 6 at 8 pm, Lens Design will host a celebration of Chris Pachuls life, All are welcomed to reminisce, meet and hear from his family. The Guest of honour will be Peter Wyckoff. This is our way of bidding a fond farewell to Chris, a welcome return to Peter and the grand re-opening of Lens Design.

Bringing superior clarity to your eyesight requires the skills and judgment of a qualified professional . Too often we see fashion as the focus for eye-wear, with little regard on how a certain style may not be compatible with your needs.

Beaulieu Vision Care takes every aspect of your eyesight very seriously. We not only provide the most-up-to date visual correction technology, we offer the best of the latest styles by top designers.

To understand the importance of proper examinations and eyewear, let me take you on a journey of how we have come to be recognized as leaders in the field.I started working with Dr. Jarvis in 1986, fitting patients with contact lenses. At that time, Peter Wyckoff was the premier contact lens fitter and I was the fortu-nate beneficiary of his genius tutelage and mentoring. His practice was one of the few specialty lens fitting clinics in the city and he, as well as his company, LENS DESIGN, were well known and respected among the community and city at large. Thousands of patients who were fitted with contact lenses never forgot the experience or Peter.

This was a man I admired and wanted to emulate. As a result of that experience, I vowed to learn and perfect the lens fitting techniques he so generously shared with me.

When Peter decided to retire, we had a celebratory lunch at Swiss Chalet. I was surprised when he suggested I take over the practice, because I know it would have meant taking over where he left off. Those were big shoes to fill, and I was not ready for a retail type practice. I was content with current situation. My as-sociation with Dr. Jarvis and Dr. Smythe, also with the credit valley eye associ-ates Dr. Miller, Dr. Vettese and my work with the college of opticians chair of Competency and Examination. It just was not the right time for me to take over his practice, but I was happy to hear that Chris Pachul, a long time friend with whom I had worked with briefly at Eatons Yorkdale Optical Department. We had very similar working styles and both chose the best lab and lens materials to work with. We had a great deal of respect for the Optical industry we would often share our ideas, and even discussed amalgamating our businesses, but we didn’t have time to plan such an undertaking.

This is one of the things I regret, not making the time to have lunch with Chris. There were no shortages of restaurants in the Kingsway, but we just never seemed to have the time. When Chris was diagnosed with Liver Cancer, he needed some time off and asked if I could give him a hand. Specifically he want-ed me to handle his more complicated contact lens fittings. He did not want to leave his patients uncared for, because he cared deeply for them.

Chris passed away in August of 2012, and during the few months that I worked at Lens Design, it was clear to see that Chris Pachul was a very Talented Eye Care Provider that cared for his patients deeply. After his death, meeting his family, further confirmed his loyalty to his profession and love for his family and many friends.

Please, take a walk and see all the beautiful churches. As a business community we are very blessed with so many places where one can calm the mind and lighten the heart and spirit. Some of the best ideas have been born in Church basements, including the Taste of the Kingsway Festival. It was a local church that started this community event, inviting one and all to join in.

At the Taste be sure to check out the lineup of entertainment on the stages. Take a look at the historic tent, to see the Kingsway then and now. You are invited to walk in to the businesses and ask if they have a Kingsway special. You may be pleasantly surprised as to what you are offered just by asking. To truly get a taste of the KINGSWAY, you should visit as many businesses as you can.

The Kingsway is unique with its medians and overflowing with flowers more so than any other business community. Did you know that because of the medians, there is a significant drop in the road pedestrian casualties? We hope you take the time to visit us during the street festival, and we invite you to come during other times of the year. Along the Kingsway you will find very friendly merchants and real neighbours.

Here is the lineup of exciting events happening in the Kingsway this fall:

The Annual Bed Race will take place in October in support of the Dorothy Lea Hospice. Saturday, October 26th is Pumpkin Fest where awards will be given for best costume and best pumpkin deco-ration.

On November 23rd, 2013 at 1:30 p.m., Our Lady of Sorrows hosts Carolling in the Kingsway in support of the Out of the Cold Program. This non-ticketed annual Christmas Concert has graced the Kingsway for over 12 years. The concert is a standing room only, non-denominational Christmas concert. Choirs from 6 local churches are under the leadership of the talented Conductor, Shawn Grenke. People come back year after year for this charity concert, as it is that good. Come out to experience this beautiful Christmas concert and support a good cause!

Check out the restaurants after the concert on November 23rd and later join us at 6:30 p.m. for the Cavalcade of Lights ceremony. We will have a real Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

The Kingsway is full of service-oriented businesses. Please walk in to a nail spa and get polished up. Visit one of the Kingsway’s Optical locations where a licensed eye care provider will assist you with your vision. If you are planning on taking a vacation, the Kingsway’s travel agents are here to assist you with the best service possible. People of all ages, take part in some retail therapy and check out the clothiers, to try a new look!

The Kingsway has many doctors and health care specialists, dedicated to keeping their patients and clients happy and healthy. Get advice from the pharmacist, or do your legal banking. The Kingsway has it all. We are a full service business community. If the ready-made is not your size we will make it fit. So it is safe to start here and the rest will follow, we will satisfy all your needs and tailor it to fit your budget.

I wish you all a great time have a safe and fun visit with us and look forward of seeing you again soon.

Cathy Beaulieu Chair of the Kingsway BIA Beaulieu Vision Care Lens Design

It is with great pleasure that I present to you the 2013 Taste of the Kingsway (TOTK). Every year we make it bigger and better, to suite and connect to the character of this community, and give something for everyone that visits.

Then and NowDo you know these facts about The Kingsway?• Between 1906 and 1912, Robert Home Smith bought 3000 acres of land along the Humber River between Eglinton and Lake Ontario, which he developed into subdivisions such as Baby Point, River-side Drive and Kingsway Park (now usually just called “The King-sway”.)

• The first two houses in The Kingsway were 43 and 47 The King-sway, built in 1924 for Edward J. Cousins and Edward L. Cousins, father and son, respectively.

• Between 1924 and 1947, 665 homes were built in The Kingsway.

• The Kingsway was the first subdivision road ever paved in Etobi-coke.

• The Kingsway is wider than other roads in The Kingsway because Home Smith had planned to have an electric railway run down the centre of the street between Dundas and Bloor.

• Royal York Road was named after the Royal York Golf Course, opened by a partnership between the Royal York Hotel and Robert Home Smith in 1929. That golf course was renamed St. George’s Golf and Country Club in 1946. To help celebrate The Kingsway BIA’s 40th anniversary, a tent has been set up at The Taste of the Kingsway festival September 6-7-8. Inside is an exciting display of old photos of The Kingsway area, along with photos taken in the same locations today. Look for the sign “THEN & NOW in The Kingsway” on the tent. We’ll be there to answer your questions all weekend... hope you’ll drop by to say hello!

Patricia’s Cake Creations is a family run business, offering the utmost quality and service to their customers for over 9 years. Previously based in Mississauga, the Drewnowska family was excited to open up shop in the Kingsway. Owner Patricia Drewnowska is a wedding and special occasion designer, and she is a perfectionist when it comes to creating the most exquisitely decorated and fla-vourful cakes for her customers. Patricia states, “The quality of the flavor, taste and design is the most important to us. We don’t use any artificial ingredients, just 100% pure products, and only the best, quality ingredients.” The story of how Patricia’s Cake Creations was started begins with Patricia’s de-termination to create the most remarkable anniversary cake for her parents’ 25th wedding anniversary. Patricia took several cake decorating courses, and put her heart and soul into this project. Not only was the mission a success, but it also sparked Patricia’s new passion, to pursue a career in the culinary arts. Patricia went on to take more courses, and develop her skills as a wedding and special occasion cake designer and she has been perfecting the art ever since. Konrad, Patricia’s brother is a classically trained French Pastry Chef. He studied at the French Pastry School in Chicago and has gone on to take many specialty courses. He creates all the delicious tarts, macaroons, croissants and French pastries at Patricia’s Cake Creations. Patricia and Konrad’s mother Maria has also been there from the beginning, helping to develop their family business. Maria acts as a store manager assisting at times with decorating and she is often the smiling face greeting you at the café.

Patricia’s Cake Creations has won competitions for their exquisite taste and de-signs. Patricia’s Cake Creations have also been featured across Canadian me-dia from the Food Network, to Breakfast Television, ET Canada, Globe and Mail, Global TV and many more. I was delighted to participate in the ribbon-cut-ting for Phase 2 of the Mimico Waterfront Park at the beginning of June.

Connecting Humber Bay Shores Park with the first phase of the Mimico Waterfront Park, we now can enjoy a continuous recreational amenity from Grand Harbour to Norris Crescent Parkette. The project was a great demonstration of collaboration between the Toronto Region Conservation Author-ity, Waterfront Toronto and all three levels of gov-ernment. Revitalization of the waterfront of Canada’s largest city remains a priority for the federal government. Each level of government has committed $500 million in seed money and has given Waterfront Toronto effective development control over government-owned lands along the shores of Lake Ontario within the City of Toronto. The revitalization of Toronto’s waterfront is the largest urban rede-velopment project currently underway in North America, comprising over 800 hectares – 4 times the size of Monaco. The pace of change along the waterfront is accelerating as we prepare to welcome Pan Am / ParaPan Am Games visitors in July and August of 2015, with the redevelopment of the West Don Lands for the Athletes’ Village. Often I am asked about the federal government’s involvement in making our city even greater. Perhaps the federal government is less visible to residents of Etobicoke-Lakeshore than the municipal and provincial governments, due to our seat of activity in Ottawa. However, I can assure you that the federal gov-ernment’s support for Toronto is large and consistent. Since 2006, the federal government has invested over $4.5 billion in infrastructure in the GTA, with noteworthy projects including $622 million for the Toronto-York Spadina Sub-way Extension, $250 million for GO Transit improvements and $133 million for Union Station Revitalization. It includes $2.2 billion in Gas Tax funds directly to GTA municipalities, of which more than $1 billion was for the City of Toronto. In addition, the federal government has contributed over $700 million to the Pub-lic Transit Fund and Public Transit Capital Trust to the Province of Ontario since 2006. We’re helping Toronto get moving! Back to the subject of parks, the federal government announced in the Throne Speech of May 2011 that we would create the Rouge National Urban Park. Much of 2012 was spent conducting consultations, and Parks Canada is now working on the park concept and vision. The Rouge Park is a first of its kind in Canada, being our only national urban park – with 20% of Canada’s population within easy reach (and accessible by transit.) The Park will be 5600 hectares in area, or more than 13 times the area of Stanley Park in Vancouver. Rouge Park will be a tremendous addition to our city, and will allow us to connect to our country’s rich natural heritage. Parks and transportation are two pillars of what make cities great. I pleased to help ensure that Toronto will continue to be a great place to live, work, play and raise a family.

Having your eyes checked reg-ularly is an essential part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle because there is nothing more precious than your vision.

Eye examinations are important for people of all ages and people of all degrees of physical health. An eye care professional can be the first to discover and treat any eye diseases as well as being able to detect common chronic dis-eases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Eye exams are especially important for children. Children should first have their eye examination at 6 months old. Yearly eye examinations for school aged children are important to confirm proper development as well as to maximize academic success. Children who have eye problems may be struggling with schoolwork and may not be aware that their vision is restricting them from achieving their potential in school. Eye examinations are also essential for those who work with computers. Spend-ing over 6 hours a day looking at a computer screen can be demanding on your eyes. Frequent computer use and cause fatigue, eyestrain, headaches and dry eyes. An eye care professional can give you proper computer eyewear and advice on computer usage along with promoting preventative eye health for those individual who use technology frequently at home or at work. There are several aspects to a proper professional eye exam. The first part of an eye exam involves several screening tests including: visual field testing, color vision testing and depth perception testing. In the second part of an eye exam, the doctor will determine your prescription for glasses. Contact lenses can be fit if desired and if the patient is a good candidate for wearing contact lenses. In the final part of an eye exam the eye care physician will check the health of the patient’s eyes. The doctor will examine both the front segment and the back of the eye including the retina. This examination will be able to determine if there are any eye diseases present including: dry eye, conjunctivitis (superficial eye infection), cataracts, glaucoma or macular degeneration. An optometrist or an ophthalmologist can provide an eye health examination. An optometrist can diagnose and treat eye related diseases and also specializes in determining glasses prescriptions and fitting contacts. An Ophthalmologist will also treat eye diseases, but their focus remains mostly on care for late stage eye disease and surgery. Book an exam with an eye care professional today! Dr. Laurie Permack is an optometrist located at 3000 Bloor Street West and offers comprehensive eye exams for adults, children and infants. For more information, or to book an eye exam, visit www.drlauriepermack.com or call 416.233.5472.

Diabetes is the single largest cause of blindness in Canada.

Yes, you read that correctly. Diabetes is a disease that affects the body’s ability to produce (or use) insulin to help control blood sugar levels. We need blood sugar (glucose) to energize our body’s cells. But, too much glucose in our blood for a long time can cause damage to many organs including the heart, kidneys, blood vessels and the small blood vessels in the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy, the most common diabetic eye disease, is when the blood vessels in the retina swell or leak fluid or close off completely. Sometimes, abnor-mal and weak new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. These new blood vessels break up and leak blood into the eye so the retina cannot project images to the brain. At first, diabetic retinopathy may cause no symptoms or only mild vision problems. Once this leakage occurs, it can lead to blindness. Diabetic retinopathy can develop in anyone who has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Maintaining optimal blood glucose levels (A1C of 7.0 or less) and visiting your optometrist at least once a year is recommended. Some optometrists may rec-ommend more frequent exams. Women with type 1 or type 2 who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant should be screened before conception, during the first trimester, and as recommended during pregnancy and post-partum. Diabetes is part of my life. My daughter has Type 1 diabetes and is insulin de-pendent. Diabetes has taught my family how to eat, how not to eat, and the im-portance of good overall health. It’s hard fighting with a 5 year old about sugar. But when I research all the damage done by high blood glucose levels, I find myself in a position to emphasize the importance of an annual eye examination. Millwork: creating storage for your space

The guidelines that I’ve always promoted in my business and have ex-plained how to achieve what you and your family requires to make a life-style and/or environment transitions that will best suit your needs and wants. In essence, it is about making the decision that most makes sense to you, and not one that is dictated by the media.

I have written about how your goals and dreams can become reality by having the right people on your side. From the Real Estate Professional to the Financial Advisor, to the Interior Decorator, it’s about who is best suited to helping you fulfill your real estate needs and wants and make a strong and critical change in your and your family’s life.

SOME VERY IMPORTANT TIPS ON CHOOSING YOUR MILLWORK

When choosing the cabinets for your kitchen or bathrooms, or maybe for a cozy corner or reading area in your living room, it is important to speak to a knowledgeable person that understands the different “species” of cabinetry. Of course, which product you choose can be a base for all subsequent decisions such as colour, texture and themes of the room. Make sure you know what it is that you want to accomplish first.

Here are some references to use in the cabinetry selection process:MagazinesInternetOther completed projects construction sites in your neighborhood (pay a visit)Trade ShowsSpecific Retail Locations

WHAT CRITERIA WILL HELP MAKE THE DECISION?

Use the space for cabinetry wisely (i.e. no wasted space)Ensure that kitchen appliances will work well with the cabinetry selectedMake sure that you select an appropriate product (i.e. wood, PVC, etc.) for your lifestyle

The countertop should be an important and crucial aspect of the overall lookThese few tips will play a vital role in choosing your cabinetry. It’s important to remember that choosing the right millwork could make all the difference in your overall renovation. Ask questions, be knowledgeable, and seek a Profes-sional. Last but not least, just to reiterate one of my renovation suggestions from my last editorial, though your cabinetry can be pricey it can go a long way in growing your investment, whether you choose to remain in your space or sell it. Fall’s unrelenting chill will be drawing closer and we’ll all scramble to our closets to sift through our wardrobes of darker shades and wool-blend staples; this season, we can gear up for some key pieces that’ll give your wardrobe an updated look.

While whites always make their way through into the cooler season; the strong presence of this lighter shade can be incorporated in pieces such as a coat or dresses. Italian label, Siste’s incorporates the winter white in luxe fabrications such as wool blends and soft neoprene, accented by laser-cut silhouettes and lace de-tailing. But, it’s not just white we’re seeing but a massive green movement, a colour that there’s not going to be a shortage of. Look for deeper hues such as emeralds that embody the autumn season. Or take notes from denim label, DL 1961 this season, with their khaki and subtle earth tones seen throughout the collection and can be transitioned from day to night. While Siste’s focuses on the softer feminine side of things and DL 1961 on up-dated classics, SuperTrash embodies the young urban fashionista. With edgy quilted leather looks at the forefront, they’re softened by the brand’s forward separates and fun knits - look for knits that’ll have versatility with denim, leather and other fabrications because you’ll be seeing a lot of knits this season! With Canadian labels like Melissa Nepton LINE Knitwear and John & Jenn who spe-cialize in knitwear - the assortment of cardigans, wrap silhouettes, jackets & outerwear will be ample and transition easily from the early fall into the cooler season. With Fall just around the corner, construction bins are popping up all over The Kingsway, Thorncrest Village and Princess Anne Manor and contractors will be setting up shop for another busy season.

Local residence and owners of In-style Kitchens and Bathroom, Mi-chael Lamarche and Gerry Turino, have been renovating in the area for over 12 years. With over 400 com-pleted local renovation projects they have strong support from past clients who are now acting as refer-ences for their renovations of local kitchens, bathroom, basements, additions and large custom homes (see updated website www.ikb.ca for details).

Many of their past clients will invite new clients over for a quick tour of their completed work, giving Instyle a gold seal of approval. At Instyle, every project is treated as top priority. “A constant complaint we hear from local residence is how they hired a contractor to do what seemed to be a straight forward project and instead of taking three to four weeks to complete it, ended up dragging on for six to 12 months,” says Turino, a Master Electrician, Master builder and a Kitchen and Bath Designer. “Just have a look around the area, the lawn sign goes up and it’s still there six months later.”

With many successful projects behind them, Lamarche and Turino have the necessary experience needed to complete any project, big or small, on budget and on time. Just ask one of their many former clients. At Instyle Kitchens and Bathrooms, customers are provided with a one-stop shopping experience for a stress-free home renovation.

When you make the initial phone call to 416-833-4343, a free in house consul-tation and quotation will be set up. At the meeting you’ll view a slide show of past, local projects. Then, a general ballpark figure is given base on your project discussions. At a later date, you will be invited to the local showroom at 361 Jane St. (near Annette) to select all material cabinetry, countertops, backsplash, flooring, electrical, and plumbing for your dream kitchen and bathroom. Instyle also handles all kitchen cabinet layouts drawings, and permits. At the end of this second appointment, with all the material selected, Instyle will present an accurate cost for the project with a clear start and finish date.

If you are planning a kitchen, bathroom or basement renovation, please call 416-833-4343 or visitwww.ikb.ca.
