The day began as a warm, sunny spring day in the town of Joplin,Missouri. The Joplin High School Class of 2011 commencement that

afternoon marked an important moment in the lives of the graduating

seniors as they looked ahead with bright hopes and dreams for the future.

Little did they know that just minutes after they accepted their diplomas

and threw their caps into the air a massive tornado would tear Joplin

apart, taking the lives of 160 of its 50,000 residents.

The tornado struck, leaving familiesseparated, homes destroyed, and lives

forever changed. Ten schools were

damaged or completely destroyed,

including Joplin High School. Seven

students and one staff member

perished. Just as this moment is

ingrained in the communitys collectiveconsciousness, so was the ticking

time before the start of the school

year. As the district, families, students,

and community members struggled

to prepare for a return to some level

of normalcy and a year of academic

excellence, they needed supportmore than ever.

SO HOW CAN WE HELP?How can a group of designers in

a Chicago design firm help lend

a helping hand from 600 miles

away?

If we think beyond ourselves,

our firm, and our industries,

we can come together for a

greater cause.

Uniting five areas of design

for one cause by way of aposter competition, fundraiser,

and culminating happy hour,

were putting our skills to use

- designing and celebrating -

all in the name of rebuilding

Joplin.

Focusing our efforts on one

area near and dear to our

hearts, we can raise money

for those in urgent need :

teachers, facing a new school

year with nothing left.
