This is an essential program in giving students a taste of what to expect in the workforce and in many cases confirming whether they would want to follow this pathway. It is very pleasing that reports from employers are full of praise for how our students perform. Recently all parents will have received in the post the “Traffic Lights” information informing parents of how their child is progressing in their studies. This process backs up the conversations had at our recent Student Parent Teacher interviews to keep parents and in particular students informed about their learning progress. Please, if needed contact us to organise a meeting so that we can look at ways of improvement in our support. It is essential that Students, Parents and Staff work together to make sure that students are provided with all the support to succeed in their learning. More importantly it is essential that students are: Prepared - required homework for the day is prepared - diary check to make sure homework and assignments are completed. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Throughout the week our Year 10 students have actively organised and taken part in Work Experience. This is an essential program in giving students a taste of what to expect in the workforce and in many cases confirming whether they would want to follow this

pathway.

More importantly it is essential that students are:

Prepared - required homework for the day is prepared - diary check to make sure homework and assignments are completed. You are rested and prepared for the

learning challenges ahead. You have all the correct resources and materials organised for the day of work.

Presenting yourself – the organised way you present yourself to others – wearing the correct uniform, bringing all the correct materials etc.

Punctuality and attendance: you are organised to be on time to school.” Regular attendance is and always has been the key to success”.

Many of these traits we practice at school every day are important work and life skills for success in the future.

YEAR 12 STUDENTS - LOSS OF BONUS POINTS (for 2016) – progress report As mentioned in the last newsletter, we were advised by the South Australian Tertiary Admission Centre (SATAC) that the three South Australian Universities were changing the Universities Bonus Schemes for students in South Australia. In the past, Waikerie and Loxton High Schools have been allocated 5 Bonus Points within the “Universities Equity Scheme: school based bonuses” for eligible students.

The Scheme will apply to all courses offered by Flinders University, the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, Charles Darwin University and Tabor Adelaide.

School-based bonuses South Australian, Northern Territory and ‘border’ schools attracting equity bonuses will be identified using criteria agreed to by the universities which consider:

schools’ remoteness as defined under the

Australian Standard Geographical Classification

the ‘participation rate’ (the percentage of

students in each school gaining an Australian

Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) who receive a

SATAC offer averaged over three years)

the mean ATAR achieved in each school

(averaged over three years)

schools’ Index of Community Socio-Educational

Advantage (averaged over three years)

More information can be accessed by:

http://www.satac.edu.au/universities-bonus-schemes

This year Waikerie and Loxton High Schools are “not eligible” for this Equity Scheme of 5 Bonus points.

A Governing Council subcommittee continues to coordinate with Loxton High School Council and coordinate action on behalf of the council. We are receiving replies to our concerns from SATAC, Ministers and Politicians. The Governing Council has a draft letter and a list of those who they sent copies to, so that parents can use if they wish to respond individually. This letter can be collected from the front office or can be emailed to you on request.

Mock Interviews Waikerie High School students are now better prepared for future job interviews.

All year 10 Waikerie High School students studying the compulsory Personal Learning Plan (PLP) participated in mock interviews

conducted by the Waikerie Rotary Club. The students were given the opportunity to showcase their communication skills when interviewed for a range of jobs throughout the Waikerie area. The students were encouraged to dress, communicate and conduct themselves in a professional manner which was great practice for their job seeking futures. Teachers Ms Lesley Morphett, Ms Gill Collins and Ms Sarah Koch helped prepare students for the interviews by working through written applications for a job, creating and collecting a folio of evidence to support their application and the finer details of presentation and communication style.

The Waikerie Rotary Club supports this learning experience with members and volunteers acting as prospective employers. To add to the reality, interviews are set up at various businesses and locations around the district. Students attend these interviews and are provided with feedback to support their learning.

Waikerie High would like to thank the Waikerie Rotary Club for their ongoing support with this programme. We would also like to thank the following local business owners and groups, for allowing the interviews to take place on the day. They were Agritech, Elders, Waikerie Hotel, Catholic Church and Hansen Electrical.

Parent Evening – University Information Parents of students considering a University option next year have the opportunity to attend an

information session to outline details of the process. It is at the Waikerie High School resource centre on Monday 20th June from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. It is being presented by a Uni SA representative but covers general university details. Year 12 Students considering University will attend an information session specifically targeted at them on the same day from 2:20pm to 3:30pm. Students are still encouraged to come along with parents for the evening session.

CONGRATULATIONS TO TEAM ‘BANK-KINGS’

Well done to everyone who participated in the 2016 Sharemarket Game1. Students from Stage 1 & 2 Mathematics took part in investing $50,000 with the sole aim of making a profit over 10 weeks.

This was overall a very positive market to trade in, as can be seen with the statistics below:

The All Ordinaries (XAO) was up over 4%

All sectors finished in the positive - the best performing sectors were telecommunications up over 10%, health care up by 9.8%, materials and IT both up over 8%

The worst performing sector was financials up only 0.76% and consumer staples up just over 2%

The top stocks were ORE - Orocobre Limited up 44%, EVN - Evolution Mining up over 40% and ZEL - Z Energy up over 28%

The worst performing stocks were CDD -Cardno Limited down 33%, MSB -Mesoblast and ILU - Iluka Resources both down over 21%

57% of syndicates finished in profit with the average portfolio value being $50,511.

Congratulations to the winning syndicates, Bank-Kings (Kane Matthews & Ben Smith) in Year 11 Portfolio Value: $54,097.96 (29th in the state)

Bank-Kings invested in HVN (Harvey Norman), ISD (Isentia Group), JHC (Japara Healthcare), MMS (McMillian Shakespeare), NEC (Nine Entertainment) & RRL (regis Resources) which was their best share making a profit of $1,726. Only two of their companies made losses (HVN & JHC). They used a buy and hold approach having only sold 1 company during the 10 week game. In 10 weeks they made $4,097.96 profit which equates to an equivalent interest rate of 42.62% pa. Try getting that in a bank!!

Strategy: “Throughout the sharemarket game, we bought some random companies at first without any strategy. When we started losing money we decided to buy companies that had recently dropped in price, hoping they would rise to a higher percentage, this meaning a larger profit. We would then sell them for more than what we had bought them for.” (Kane Matthews)

“We looked at companies and tried to find ones that had dropped recently. This would hopefully mean they would make lots of money quickly. We also looked at companies we had bought and once they had made more money than they were purchased for, we sold them and a profit was made”. (Ben Smith)

2ND: Jack (Jack Parfitt) in Year 11 $53,302.02 (equivalent interest rate 34.34% pa) 3RD: Dominic-Jaslyn (Dominic Travaglione & Jaslyn Fox) in Year 11 $52,784.74 (equivalent interest rate 28.96% pa)

Ben and Kane will each be given $50 with which, I hope, they open up an investment account with the sole purpose of investing this starting money and

thus ensuring the start of their financial security. Only 3 of the 21 syndicates did not make a profit. Not bad for first time investors. The next game begins in a couple of months, so see me to register your interest and the chance to start your own investment fund!!

Interschool Cross-Country at

Waikerie.

Waikerie hosted the 2016 Riverland Secondary School’s Sport Associations Apex Cup on Tuesday 31st May.

Although conditions along the riverfront course were challenging after some rain, numbers to the event were excellent with 180 students competing on the day. The participation from Waikerie was outstanding with 56 competitors with an even spread across the age groups. Eight students who were not competing volunteered their time to officiate and cater. Loxton were the event winners but only just after an excellent overall performance by Renmark. Waikerie competed well with a number of individual medal winners and the U16 boy’s pennant. Mason Brock won the U16 Boys Race, Declan Sidhu finishing third and four other runners finished in the top eight in this division. Brycen Brock won the U14 Boys event and Emma Taylor was third in the U13 Girls. Thank you to the Waikerie Football Club for the use of the change rooms, oval, and the ‘Steak Hut”, the school’s SRC and volunteers for running a BBQ and the Council for the use of their event signs.
