PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Term 2 has again been busy with many events taking place to support learning opportunities. I continue to be proud of the many achievements and efforts our students display at school and within the wider community.

ANZAC DAY: It was terrific to attend the Waikerie ANZAC service and pay respects to all those impacted by war. Thank you to our School Captains, Connie Griffiths and Jack Burgemeister for representing our school with the laying of a wreath.

STUDENT/PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS: As a follow up from reports, many parents took the opportunity to discuss student progress with teachers. A total of 325 interviews were conducted on the night which highlights the great work that both parents and teachers are doing to support student learning.

TRAFFIC LIGHT DATA: This information was posted out to parents on the 28th May. This will provide further feedback on student progress at this time and we encourage parents to discuss this with their children. Please contact the teacher if you have concerns.

CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY: It was fantastic to see students being acknowledged for their academic and sporting efforts in Term 1.

Congratulations to those students who received a certificate and we look forward to others striving to improve results. This assembly is always very positive for students and staff and it was terrific to have the support of the many parents in attendance.

NAPLAN: Year 9 students completed NAPLAN testing and we look forward to receiving data to help support student learning. Thank you to our middle school assistant principal, Mr Dion Higgins for coordinating the tests.

SPORTING ACTIVITIES: Congratulations to Daniel Schmidt on his recent selection to represent School Sport SA at the forthcoming School Sport Australia hockey championships. These championships will be held in the Gold Coast later in the year. Cross Country Running has featured heavily in our calendar this term. Congratulations to all those students who show the courage to participate and give their best efforts.

FOOD FAIR: It was a pleasure to again be involved in the Waikerie Rotary Food Fair last weekend. Thank you to Mr Tyler and the SRC for their efforts in planning and running the activities and raffle on the day. Importantly, we thank the community for their ongoing support for our school.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS: Our STEM works upgrades are progressing with the upgrade of our chemistry and physics laboratories closer to completion. We will then move to stage 2 where improvements will be made to the maths areas. Other classrooms have been fitted with new floor coverings and some of our buildings have been painted. We are very proud of our school environment. It is great to hear the positive feedback from students around their appreciation of the grounds

STUDENT FREE DAY: A reminder that our student free day will be on Friday 8th June. Staff will be involved in professional development with all other Riverland Secondary Schools around moderation.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

DAYMAP Year 12 students have gained access this term to the Daymap system. Year. 12 teachers are expected to add their lessons to the web based program so students can go back over learning intentions, success criteria, notes and

resources from each lesson. Assessment tasks can be submitted through Daymap and teachers can draft and send student back their work. The feedback from students has been positive. Although parents cannot gain access just yet, we encourage parents to get their child to log on to the system and observe the format.

There are definitely no more excuses for not knowing what is for homework or a due date from now on!

FLINDERS UNIVERSITY ENRICHMENT DAY TUESDAY 3RD JULY Year 11 students have the opportunity to travel to Flinders University and be involved in subject specific activities on campus. Although University is not everyone’s pathway, it is pleasing to see students taking the opportunity to gain new experiences. Excursion consent forms will be out shortly for this.

EXAMS Year 11 Exams will be conducted in Week 9. Most exams will be conducted during the subject’s double lesson so as not to interfere with the normal timetable. All lessons outside the exam will run as normal. Although exams are finished by Week 10, this week is required to finish off Semester 1 assessment and is a normal school week. Year 12 Mid-year exams will be in Week 10. These will be mostly in the double lessons. Some subjects will require summative assessments (towards final grade) and others formative (practice). Either way, the more experience students have in exams, the better they will be prepared for end of year exams which contribute 30% of course grades. SACE COMPULSORY SUBJECTS It is disappointing to see some students not making a genuine attempt to pass some subjects at school. I would like to make it clear that the following subjects MUST be repeated if they are not passed as the SACE cannot be achieved without these subjects:

1. Year 10 Personal Learning Plan (PLP) – Students will be enrolled in a Year 10 class again next year whilst they are in Year 11.

2. Year 11 Literacy (English) two semesters – students will need to repeat next year whilst in Year 12.

3. Year 11 Numeracy (Maths) one semester – students will need to enrol in a semester 2 course.

4. Year 12 Research Project – students will need join the Year 11 class in semester 2 or attend Year 13.

Unfortunately, if the repeated subject is on at the same time as an elective then the student will miss out on their choice which may affect their pathway.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

During Week 3, Year 9 students participated in the NAPLAN testing. Congratulations to all students who completed all of the tests which was celebrated with a morning tea on the Thursday.

TRAFFIC LIGHT DATA: Traffic Light data was sent home during Week 5 to indicate student progress in

their subjects. We urge parents to discuss your child’s results and to promote discussion around their learning and improvement ready for their end of semester report, building on the schools’ culture of high expectations in education. SCHOOL UNIFORM: It is fantastic to see students taking pride in wearing their Waikerie High School uniform. This helps to promote a sense of belonging to the school and surrounding community and we want this culture to continue. If your child needs new uniform items, the Uniform Shop is open Tuesday after school 3:30pm to 4:20pm and Thursday 8:30am to 9am.

PHYSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP

On the 10th May Year 8 and 9 drama students enjoyed an active workshop with actor Craig McArdle. They learned to express themselves with their eyes and bodies making physical machines, lots of noise and having a great time. Our drama program supports visiting artists to work with our students in new and innovative ways and provides an outlet for many of our creative students.

YEAR 10 MOCK INTERVIEWS

On the 15th May Year 10 students participated in a Mock Interview as part pf their Personal Learning Plan Program. Rotary provided a selection of venues and interview panels around the Waikerie townships to host the interviews. Students were a little anxious but keen to participate in a professional interview which for many will be their first experience of the job market. Well done to all who participated and a big thank you to Rotary members. We couldn’t do it without you.

SCIENCE EXPERIENCE

ConocoPhillips Science Experience. Applications are now open for Year 9 or 10 students with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). If chosen, applicants will take part in a 3 or 4 day program at one of the 3 universities in Adelaide. There is a small cost but this can be assisted by Rotary. We can help with this application to Rotary. Please see Mrs Haynes if interested. This is a very worthwhile experience for those looking at a career path in STEM. Alternatively, you can apply online at https://www.scienceexperience.com.au/

Late last term we were fortunate enough to have two highly worthwhile interactive presenters showcase Maths and Science skills. We had World of Maths come and present some interactive maths problems for the Year 8, 9 and 10 students. We also had Education Interactive run a Forensics workshop for the Year 8, 9 and 10 students, who had to solve a crime using the technology that Police and Investigators use.

Coming up we have a busy term for Maths/Science. Monday 4th June, we have the Deadly Australians visit (Flyer attached to the newsletter). On the 29th May, we had 27 students from Year 8, 9 and 10 competing for Waikerie High School at the Riverland Interschool Maths Olympics in Loxton. On Monday the 25th June, 32 Year 9 and 10 students will compete against the Riverland and Murray Mallee schools at Renmark, for a place in the Science and Engineering final in Adelaide.

alternate lines around technical sections. The boys did a total of 218.4km over the 12 hours, riding 6 hours on Saturday and 6 hours Sunday in a relay team format. Both Dirt Warrior Teams managed a total of 27 laps with 3rd place at 25 laps and a total of 202.8km.

Dirt Warriors – Nathan Schmidt (Captain), James Smith, Aden Hocking and Lucas Hocking.

Dirt Warriors 2 – Daniel Schmidt (Captain), Jack Colbert, Mitchell Rayner and Connor Mackereth.

A Dirt Warriors team has competed in this event for the past three years, taking 3rd place their first year and first place the past two years. 2018 saw the boys take out first and second place, with Daniel Schmidt recording the fastest lap in the Squirt Lube category earning himself a $50 Ground Effect voucher, on top of the other prizes the boys won.

A BikeSA representative will be visiting Waikerie High School to present the school with the inaugural Dirty Weekend Schools Challenge Trophy. The school with the highest number of accumulated points at the conclusion of the event is awarded this trophy which the school is able to keep until next year’s event.

Cadell surge to win the Waikerie High School Cross Country Well done to the Cadell house for winning the Waikerie High School Cross Country Titles. Participation was very good in most age groups and many students were able to complete the 2.4km or 3.00km course within 20 minutes to receive points for their house.

The school would like to thank the Waikerie Football Club for the use of their change rooms, oval and BBQ facilities. Further thanks goes to the SRC who made sure no one went hungry after their run by providing BBQ food and drinks.

Well done to all competitors and the school now looks to compete strongly at the Riverland competition to be hosted by Renmark High School at Paringa on Wednesday May 23rd and the South Australian championships on Thursday 7th June at the Oakbank Racecourse.
