TIME OF RESOLVE
The history of 2011 has been written and in the record books. The closing of the old and ringing in the New Year represents more than a symbolic change. For me, I have
found the beginning of a new year brings a mental and physiological change. It’s a time to clean the mind and let go of any missed opportunities, goals not achieved and experience a natural recharging of the spirit and self motivation. Your “mental plate” is wiped clean, and refilled with optimism and confidence for the upcoming year. There hasn’t been enough time yet to have any measurable results of our New Year goals and achievements. However, we thrive on the belief the goals are achievable and acclaim profound RESOLVE to taking the necessary actions to accomplish them.
Our resolve, often expressed in the form of a New Year resolution, can cover both our personal and professional lives. As a business owner it is hard to separate the impact one can have on the other. It’s also hard to separate the impact a successful business can have on the overall business
community and vise versa. Therefore, it seems appropriate that among one’s proclaimed resolve, you should take note of Donna Sims’ suggested resolution last week in the weekly email: “Become more active in the Chamber”. I am reminded of a well-known quote of former President John F Kennedy: “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. If we (Chamber members & business owners) resolved to apply this mentality to our business community (utilizing the Chamber as the conduit), our overall community business health and prosperity in 2012 could be significantly different than 2011.
Including the Chamber in your New Year’s resolutions is also synonymous with resolving to make a difference. Many times the question is asked, how do I make a difference? What can I do for my business community? In answering these questions, often you quickly hear comments like, “I’m just one person, or just a small business”. This reminds me of a question I heard someone ask that has stuck with me and I believe is applicable. The question was, “how does a tiny flea consume an elephant”? Of course, the answer is, “one bite at a time”. There are some lessons to be gained from this riddle:

Notes from the Luncheon
About 40 members and guests were on hand at Prairie House Restaurant on Dec. 21st to enjoy the Christmas carols, fajita lunch, and holiday spirit at the December Networking Luncheon. Director Carol Henry introduced Pastor Chris Yost and members of Cross Way United Methodist Church, who entertained us with an inspiring message and uplifting music.
Suddenlink Communications, represented by John Moses, sponsored the event. Door prizes were provided by Suddenlink Communications, Raphael’s Restaurante Mexicano, Prairie House Restaurant, Cross Way United Methodist Church, and Senator Craig Estes.
Board of Directors President David Painter presented commemorative plaques to Glen Sanders of Glen Sanders Insurance Agency and John Moses of Suddenlink Communications in honor of recent Ribbon Cuttings at their business locations.
The Aubrey 380 Area Chamber of Commerce would like to say “Thank You” to Danny Mitchell and First Security Bank for continuing their Gold Sponsorship in 2012. FSB is a great role model and example for our business community.

Be On The Lookout:Form 1099-K making Debut in January 2012
Starting in January 2012, businesses that accept credit and debit cards or use third party network payers such as PayPal when making sales to customers will receive an IRS tax form 1099-K from their merchant card processing company. The 1099-K will report the total payment transactions for the year 2011. The new reporting requirement is part of on-going government efforts to increase collection of income tax.
The IRS tax form 1099-K was created as part of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 to increase compliance in reporting sales income by merchants. Because the IRS also gets a copy of the form, it will help the agency to determine whether or not business owners are reporting correct sales figures on their tax returns.
Not only must banks and credit card processing companies comply with the new reporting requirement, third party networks such as PayPal and eBay, Inc. must also report total credit card transactions to their business customers who use their services to process online sales. Compliance may prove to be a major adjustment for these entities. PayPal, a subsidiary of eBay, Inc., generated more than $31 billion in total net payments in 2009, according to eBay’s annual report for that year.
Not every merchant will receive a form 1099-K from third party networks; only those who generated a minimum of 200 transactions and $20,000 or more in
sales. Casual sellers should keep in mind that even though they may not receive a 1099-K, their sales income is subject to income tax and must be reported on their tax return. Knowing whether your online “garage sale” qualifies as a business in the eyes of the IRS can be tricky, so check with a tax professional to determine if your casual sales may qualify as a business.
The 1099-K filing requirement is just one method being looked at by Congress to close the tax gap — that is, the gap between the tax revenues that the government should be collecting and the actual collections. Another IRS form 1099 that some merchants may receive is the form 1099-MISC which is used to report payments made to independent contractors when total payments for the year are at least $600. In addition to income taxes, independent contractors must also pay their own Social Security and Medicare taxes.
