CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP AS A BUSINESS STRATEGY
In our newsletter last month, I referenced a study conducted by The Schapiro Group* which focused on the impact of a company belonging to a Chamber. I want to share
more insights gained from the study and its relevance to consumer outcomes. I believe it is significant to note that the respondents weren’t targeted Chamber members, but randomly selected adults from across the nation.
The study’s mission and design was to determine the real value to businesses in terms of consumer outcomes of joining and being active in their local Chamber. Do consumers really support businesses because they are Chamber members?
One of the embedded tests was to determine how effective an active membership is in making specific impressions on customers. Will they perceive your business as a) reputable; b) caring for its customers; c) involved in the community; d) using good business practices? The results show that being active in a local chamber is a good and effective strategy for communicating these traits, regardless of what the consumer may or may not already think about the company.
*The Schapiro Group, Inc. / 127 Peachtree Street NE, Suite 1540 / Atlanta, GA. 30303/ www.schapirogroup.com. / “The Real Value of Joining a Local Chamber of Commerce; A Research Study”
What a Local Chamber Membership Shows Customers
63%• - You are involved in the community64% - You care about your customers•69% - You have a good reputation•70% - You use good business practices•
The conclusion from these responses is that 7 out of 10 consumers believe that being actively involved in the chamber is an effective strategy for enhancing a business’ reputation and for demonstrating that it uses good business practices.
In previous newsletters and at our Chamber luncheons, I speak often about the inherent value which can accrue to a business owner from his/her active participation in our Chamber. The data from this study substantiates this fact and the potential for business growth and success. I believe it is obvious that membership is not only a way for individual growth, but a means for overall growth of our entire business community. The larger the number of memberships, the more favorable the perception of our entire community becomes as a desirable place for every resident to spend their consumption dollars. It’s also obvious that each of us can have a greater role in our chamber and community growth and well-being; invite a peer or any non-member business to join you in membership of the chamber.

Notes from the LuncheonThe March Networking Luncheon on
March 18th was sponsored by Keep Aubrey Beautiful; KAB representative Deborah Goin presented updated information on several Aubrey community events: KAB’s Great American Cleanup, the 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off, and the Peanut Festival. Also, Deke Alexander was on hand to discuss the upcoming golf tournament.
Dan Leal, Executive Director of the Children’s Advocacy Center for Denton County was the featured speaker at the March Networking Luncheon. Dan told the crowd that the CACDC provides a child-friendly and warm environment for children who have been suspected of being sexually or physically abused. Their approach reduces further trauma to the child and their family, provides healing, and holds more offenders accountable. CACDC also realizes that education is a vital component to preventing child abuse and is dedicated to teaching adults in our community how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to this issue. They provide free training to churches, schools, mom’s associations, or anyone who might benefit.
Mr. Leal provided statistics which indicate that 69% of alleged victims are female, while 93% of alleged perpetrators are male, and only 1% of alleged perpetrators are strangers to their alleged victims.
Mr. Leal ended the presentation by saying that the CACDC needs “Champions for Children”, which could include anything from mentoring to serving on committees to being a Board member. For more information call 972-317-2818, or visit their website at www.cacdc.org.
If you suspect that a child you know is being abused, call 1-800-252-5400.

Leslie Park Dedication Celebration! On Saturday, March 31st, Chamber and
community members gathered for the dedication and ribbon cutting for Aubrey’s newest public space, Leslie Park. As well as being actively involved with
Aubrey schools, Tim was also a founding member of the Aubrey Area Chamber of Commerce. and served as president of the organization. Tim also founded the local newspaper, The Town Charter.
Tim’s wife Allison and family were on hand to receive a plaque commemorating the dedication and cut the official Chamber ribbon.
