TEAMWORK IN ACTION: AN EXAMPLE

Teamwork is necessary for a community to grow and prosper. In the past I’ve spoken often about teamwork many times and many ways. I dedicated my letter (July 2011) in this

publication to this subject pointing out ways to accomplish teamwork for the betterment of our community and business environment. Again I’ll turn to Webster’s Dictionary definition as the cooperation or coordinated effort by a group of persons acting together as a team or for a common cause.

My purpose of this letter is not to focus on definitions, but to share an example of our community and business environment benefiting from what has been accomplished by a local team. For a team to have success, it must be focused on a common cause and associated in some joint action. Over the past months a team comprised of Aubrey 380 Area Chamber, City of Aubrey, and Venable Royalty, LLC (Richard Rogers, Managing Partner) have coordinated their efforts and committed resources to a “Community Services” directional signing project. As one drives into most major cities, it is likely, and expected, to be assisted by directional signage which helps in locating key city/community services locations. Aubrey now

joins the ranks of such cities as Denton, Frisco and others dedicated to assisting its citizens, visitors, new residents, and potential business owners & developers in locating their needed services. The signs will be similar to the photo below.

Our signs will have five panels, each of a different color, consisting of:

City Hall•Police Station•Fire Station•Downtown Aubrey•Chamber of Commerce •

The installation of these signs should be completed by the end of September.

The City of Aubrey, Chamber, and community are grateful for the generosity of Richard Rogers for his financial donation to the Chamber which

funded the cost of manufacturing the signs (four sets, double sided, multi-color). Furthermore, the Chamber has donated these signs to the City of Aubrey, its citizens, and the local community.

This project represents more than providing a much-needed service to our citizens, visitors and business community. It’s an example of collective teamwork where city government, an organization, and a local business provide an outcome strengthening the entire area for everyone.

TEAMWORK ------- a two-way street where all benefit. Just think of the possibilities!

The August Networking Luncheon was both entertaining and informative. Retired Judge Darlene Witten delivered a program called “The Future in the Rear View Mirror”. Judge Witten had the crowd laughing while at the same recounting thought-provoking stories of working with juvenile offenders and the unintended consequences that their parents’ actions ultimately had on those children’s lives.

Judy Higgs, Chairman of the Nominating Committee for potential board members, asked for nominations to fill four positions on the 2013 Board of Directors.

Jodie Linton-Prickett discussed a possible membership/ambassador committee, which would visit new businesses in the area and speak with them about the advantages of joining the Chamber.

August luncheon sponsors were Rev. Liz Moen of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, who talked about the formation of the Community Garden.

Richard Rogers of Venable Royalty, Ltd., representing the Greenbelt Alliance of Denton County told the group about the big event known as GreenFest on the Greenbelt, to be held September 29.

Rich says, “My definition of a successful business is: A Commercial, Profitable Enterprise THAT WORKS WITHOUT YOU. As your Business Coach, I will function as an unreasonable friend who tells it like it is and keeps you working on the path toward your dreams.”

Luncheon tickets are $12 per person. You can buy your ticket in advance on our website, www.aubreycoc.org, on the “Join Now” page, or by calling the Chamber office. Tickets are also available at the door.

Would you like to be featured at our luncheon with your own talk or presentation? Or do you know someone else willing and eager? Contact the Chamber office at 940-365-9781, or send an e-mail to [email protected].

The sponsors for this month’s Luncheon are Point Bank and Anytime Fitness.
