TIDEWATER TIPSFOR THOUGHT

Last month we talked aboutfertilizing your lawn. This month Iwould like to touch on mowing. I knowwith the warm year we have had, thateveryone is well underway mowing. This is a topic we could have touchedon two months ago with the warmweather! However, I would just like togive you some advice and ideas whenmowing your lawn.

One of the most important things isto keep your mower blades sharp. Adull blade tears the grass and willweaken your lawn giving it a whitishcast appearance. You can check thisby looking at you grass after you mow.If the tops of the grass are cut straightacross, then your mower blade is fine. When the ends of the grass start tolook ragged or fuzzy it is time tore-sharpen. Be sure to mow aroundthe perimeter first. This will allow youto get as close to your sidewalk, house or obstacles around the home, which eliminates a lot of trimming. Besure to mow your lawn in a differentdirection each week. Doing this willkeep your lawn from laying down andallow it to stand up and have a moreeven cut.

Feel free to submit any questionsyou may have regarding yourlandscaping around your home, and Iwill be glad to provide you with someideas. We at Tidewater are here tohelp you in any way we can!

Top 11 Safety Suggestionsfor Extension Cord Use

The use of extension cords iscommon, but they do pose somehazards. The U.S. Consumer ProductSafety Commission recommendsthe following:

1) Use extension cords only whennecessary and on a temporary basis.

2) Use polarized extension cordswith polarized appliances.

3) Replace cracked or wornextension cords with new ones.

4) With cords lacking safetyclosures, cover unused outlets withelectrical tape or plastic caps.

5) Insert plugs fully so that no partof the prongs is exposed when theextension cord is in use.

6) When disconnecting cords, pullthe plug rather than the cord.

7) Check the plug and the body ofthe extension cord while it’s in use.Noticeable warming of these plasticparts is expected when cords arebeing used at their maximum rating. However, if the cord feels hot or if theplastic is soft, the plug wires orconnections are failing. Discardand replace.

8) Never use an extension cordwhile it is coiled or looped. Nevercover any part of it with newspapers, clothing, rugs or other objects. Neverplace an extension cord where it couldbe damaged by heavy furniture orfoot traffic.

9) Don’t use staples or nails toattach extension cords to a baseboardor other surface. This could damagethe cord and present a shock orfire hazard.

10) Use special, heavy dutyextension cords for high-wattageappliances such as air conditioners, portable electric heaters and freezers.

11) When using outdoor tools andappliances, use only extension cordslabeled for outdoor use.
