OUR HISTORY

What began as The Breakfast Club, in 1976, was incorporated as The Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce on December 19, 1989. The Chamber is a 200+ member- strong, staffed organization,

with a Board of Directors, dedicated to providing business development tools and service, as advocates to local businesses and business people.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

The Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce is or-ganized for the following purposes:

To advance the economic, industrial, professional, and civic welfare of the Smithville, Missouri area.

To promote business and community growth and development by promoting economic programs designed to strengthen and expand the income potential of all businesses within the trade area. Promoting programs of a civic, social and cultural nature which are designed to increase the func-tional and aesthetic values of the community, and

discovering and correcting problems which pre-vent the promotion of business expansion and community growth

To create a more intelligent and informed busi-ness and public opinion regarding city, county, state and national legislative and political affairs

To support all activities believed to be benefi cial to the community and area, to oppose those which might be detrimental, and in general, to promote the welfare of all area citizens, following always those policies intended to accomplish the greatest good for the greatest number.

Smithville is a hidden gem located twenty minutes north of downtown Kansas City. Alive with quaint retailers, mouth-watering eateries and a 7,000+ acre recreational lake, Smithville is a town filled with charm and bustling with activity.

A real sense of community can be found in Smithville and is felt from the top-rat-ed school district to the local retail outlets. People respect and help each other and nurture a sense of belonging that’s hard to find outside the city limits. The combina-tion of it’s diversity of activities, amenities, people and ideas, as well as the cohesive-ness and caring small town spirit makes Smithville a prime location for families to live, work and play.

Humphrey “Yankee” Smith settled the area in 1822 when he saw the advantages of-fered by the water power of the Little Platte River and he built the first mill. In the 1830’s, a town site was laid out and “Smith’s Mill” became known as “Smithville”. In 1867, Smithville was incorporated. Church-es, schools and businesses were built and the town became a busy farming community.

Smithville was plagued with floods throughout the years but in 1965 it suffered the worst flood in its history. Fifteen feet of water rushed through the center of town, destroying businesses and homes and bringing an end to this self-supporting rural farm community. These were hard years for Smithville, but the citizens pulled together to help the town survive. They went to Washington to get a flood control dam and lake to change the erratic river back into an asset to the community. The Smithville Lake Project was authorized in 1965 and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began work on the project in the 1970’s. Work continued into the 80’s and Smithville Lake was made available for use in 1982.

Smithville has a past worth remembering

The Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce extends our hospitality to new residents through our Welcome Program. Our hope is to acquaint residents with businesses, services and organizations within our town. We hope all citizens will become active in some of our local clubs, organizations, teams and religious congregations. Bruce has been a financial advisor since 1987. After graduating with his BS in finance and a minor in accounting from Columbia College he joined BC Christopher Securities as a financial consultant.
