WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to Holy Trinity High School, your faith-based choice for quality edu-cation. Holy Trinity is a 7 – 12 school with approximately 1300 students and 100 staff offering both English and French instruction for all grades. To ensure that our Middle School students (Grades 7 – 9) receive a positive transition into the next phase of their schooling, they are organized into homerooms and operate on a full year schedule for core subjects and semesters for CTF elec-tives.

At Holy Trinity, we are very proud to be able to offer something for everyone and students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of fine art or sports academies. Our high-quality academic programs offer a variety of courses to meet students at every level and interest. To help ensure student success, we offer a balanced literacy program, hands – on numeracy, and Literacy Intervention. In addition to the new programming, Holy Trinity continues to offer clubs and programs that have been popular amongst students. These include provincial award-winning vocal arts and band programs, championship winning sports teams, cheer, hip-hop and competitive dance groups and global citizenship programs like Me to We. No matter what your talents are, Holy Trinity’s dedicated staff is here for you. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the stage, in the gym, or on the field, the students at Holy Trinity are “built to perform”.

At Holy Trinity we have a rich faith life both in and outside of the classroom. Students have opportuni-ties to develop their academics as well as their faith. Students participate in weekly Masses celebrated by our local clergy, have the opportunity to participate in the Sacraments, and have faith experiences such as retreats. Students are also engaged in the aca-demic side of faith through explorations of theology and scripture in their classes at all grade levels.

As a Catholic school we participate in seasonal charity and faith based events such as the Share The Journey Solidarity Walk. Our school has a won-derful relationship with the Catholic priests in our community and they are available to come into dif-ferent classes to answer questions and give thematic presentations.

From the way we celebrate to the way our teachers view classroom management we strive to permeate our faith and the message of love in all we do at Holy Trinity. We believe that it is our faith which drives us and we ensure that we apply our understanding of that faith in a loving and contemporary context so students are nurtured with the skills to enter into their lives with hope.

INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

Fort McMurray Catholic School District and Holy Trinity High School are committed to providing high quality instructional pro-grams and educational services for Indigenous students and to increase understanding and acceptance of Indigenous cultures for all students.

A key priority for the district in the area of Indigenous education is improvement of educational achievement among First Nations, Métis and Inuit students through meaningful educational oppor-tunities from kindergarten through to grade 12. (AP 203)

At Holy Trinity, our Indigenous Liaison assists students in their educational journey as they make important career decisions. She helps teachers and students infuse Indigenous culture throughout the school and provides academic and personal sup-port throughout the year.

MIDDLE SCHOOL POD SYSTEMMIDDLE SCHOOL POD SYSTEMHoly Trinity is committed to respecting the intellectual, social, physical and emotional needs of the Middle School student each and every day. We know that Middle School is an important bridge between Elementary and High School and have designed our pro-gramming to reflect those changes. Our Middle School students are grouped in PODs. This allows stu-dents to remain with their homeroom classmates for each of their core subjects. This allows students to get to know their homeroom peer group well throughout the year, similar to their Elementary School classes. These homerooms will move between 2-3 home-room teachers who will deliver their core subject instruction, bridg-ing the gap to the High School mode of delivery.

Each grade is also assigned key team members to help support their overall school experience throughout their grade 7-12 years. Each team includes the home support through Parents/Guardians, the Principal, a Vice-Principal, a Counsellor and a Classroom Support Teacher who move to the next grade with each group of students. This allows for continuity in services and supports for students as they move throughout Middle and High School.

We offer all of the core classes mandated by Alberta Education. Our school operates on a 4 day schedule.

Middle School students will study English Lan-guage Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathe-matics, Physical Education (*may be replaced by Academy programming), Health and Reli-gion. French Language Arts is available to our French Immersion students.

Students also have the opportunity to select up to 3 electives depending on their language of instruction and Academy choices. More infor-mation can be found in the Elective and Acad-emy sections.

FRENCH IMMERSIONFRENCH IMMERSION

Students in the French Immersion program strengthen their understanding and appreciation of the Francophone language and culture, through a combined study of French and En-glish courses. They will be able to graduate with a French Immersion diploma, which will allow them to live, work and pursue post-secondary studies in French, English or both languages. Through their studies, students will develop an understanding and appreciation for the diversity of language and culture throughout Canada and the world.

DID YOU KNOW?At Holy Trinity we offer DELF certification throughout Middle and High School programming. This provides students with an official certificate of French proficiency from the French Embassy.

Our newly established English Language Learning Framework, Success in English Education and Development (S.E.E.D) is designed to meet all students at their level, regardless of their English language profi-ciency. Middle School students will have the opportunity for extra English Language support with our certified second languages instructor.

As a Catholic School System, we believe each child is a unique gift from God. As such, we then believe that while all children are of value, their uniqueness causes them to learn at different rates and at different depths. One of our core beliefs is “success for every student”. A teacher’s objec-tive is proficiency for all students.

Should an assessment show a student is not proficient, re-teaching, re-learning and reassessment are essential. To that end, Holy Trinity practise expanded opportunities for students.

These expanded opportunities can come in the form of extra help and/or assessment retakes.

ASSESSMENTAt Holy Trinity, teachers are committed to high quality teaching and learning. Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. It helps to facilitate student learning, improve in-struction and can take on a variety of forms.

Students will complete a variety of both formative and summative assessment pieces that will help to guide the teachers’ instruction as well as provide evidence for to determine their course grades.

On-going assessments may include day to day as-signments, choice projects, written assessments, project based assessments, quizzes, tests, etc.

In Grades 7 and 8, students will complete mid-term assessments as well as final year end assessments. These assessments can be a larger project, a perfor-mance task, a written test, etc.

In Grade 9, students will complete year end Provin-cial Achievement Tests as mandated by the Alberta Government.

MAPLEWOODOur Maplewood Parent and Student portals give parents and students a live view of student assignments, marks, and attendance.

Maplewood allows students to stay on top of their as-signments, and for parents to support their son/daughter throughout the process. By checking regularly into Maple-wood, parents and students can see completed and/or late assignments, marks on particular assignments as soon as they are inputted and notes from the teacher.

Some codes to note on Maplewood:

OMT (Omit) - the student has been omitted due to class absence, or other outstanding circumstanceNYC (Not Yet Completed) - this assignment has not yet been handed in and is late. The assignment currently holds a mark of 0%.LOE (Lack of Evidence) - the assignment was not able to be assessed.CPT (Complete) - the assignment is complete and handed in, but not yet marked by the teacherRNE (Replaced with New Evidence) - the student has demon-strated their understanding on a different assignmentEXT (Extension) - the student has been granted an extension on their assignment.

ELECTIVE PROGRAMMING

Elective programming at Holy Trinity CHS is grounded in our Built to Perform philosophy - we aim to equip stu-dents with the skills and competencies needed to per-form in the classroom, on the stage, on the field, in the gymnasium, and in the wider global society.

We believe that in Middle School, students should be exposed to a wide range of topics and experiences as they continue to develop through their formative years. With this in mind, our elective programming is scheduled in such a way that will allow students to try multiple offer-ings throughout the school year so that they are exposed to a wide range of experiences and skill sets. Electives are taught in a way that supports project-based and stu-dent-directed learning, with a focus on skills related to communication, teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.

SCHOOL PRACTICES

Middle School students have a 10-minute nutrition break mid-morning each day. Students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack from home or can use our vending machines. Students are not permitted to leave the building during nutrition break.

Lunch - Grade 7Lunch for Grade 7 students is closed-campus, which means students are not permitted to leave school property. Students are encouraged to bring a lunch from home (microwaves are available), or they can purchase lunch from our food service provider in the eatery. Grade 7s begin their lunch period with a 20-minute outdoor recess, so they are encouraged to dress daily for the weath-er conditions; indoor recess will be held when the temperature is colder than -20°C.

Lunch - Grade 8 & 9Lunch for Grade 8 & 9 students is open-campus, which means students can leave the school property during this time if they wish. SCHOOL PRACTICES

Because we are a learning community, it is important to limit distractions in order to focus on the learning process. With this in mind, middle school students are not permitted to have cellphones in the class-room or in the hallway during class time.

Each classroom features a hanging device holder in which students are expected to place their cell-phones at their own risk should they choose to bring them into the classroom. Otherwise, students are expected to leave their devices in their locker or at home. In some cases, a teacher may choose to per-mit the use of a device for the purpose of learning.

The teacher has the authority to confiscate a device if it is being used inappropriately. If a parent/guard-ian needs to get in touch with their child during the school day, they are encouraged to phone the main office.

SCHOOL PRACTICES

Students will be assigned a locker by their homeroom teacher during the first week of school. Students must use locks pro-vided by the school; they are not permitted to bring locks from home. Due to capacity limits, some students may be required to share a locker with a classmate. In this situation, students are encour-aged to use their shared locker for the storage of boots, jackets, gym clothes etc. Crates will be provided inside of a student’s classroom for the storage of notebooks, textbooks etc.

Gym Change RoomsHoly Trinity CHS has three change rooms (boys, girls, gender neutral) available for students who need to change for physical education class. Each change room features a bank of lockers that students can use to store their belongings. Students must bring a lock from home if they intend to use the lockers in the change room. Holy Trinity CHS is not responsible for items that are lost from unlocked lockers in the gym change room.

We want our students to appreciate that all busi-nesses, professions, and functions require appropri-ate dress and recognize that school is no different. We respect the individual fashion styles of each stu-dent, however,· Students and staff are expected to dress in a man-ner that reflects Catholic values, modesty and clean-liness, appropriate with educational goals and activ-ities at school. · Appropriate gym attire (shirt, shorts, socks and runners) is expected for PE classes. No jeans.· Appropriate dance attire is to be worn for dance classes only.· Students wearing clothing that does not reflect the learning environment will be addressed. This in-cludes clothing whereby excessive amounts of backs, bellies, or bottoms are showing and/or are exposing undergarments.

SPORT ACADEMIES

Holy Trinity Catholic High School’s Sport Academy Program aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in a specific sport. With a dual focus on skill development and fitness condi-tioning, our professional instructors and coaches work hard to ensure that each and every student is developing to their fullest potential. Whether you are interested in pursuing sport for the first time or are already a high-performing ath-lete, you will be a match for HT’s sport academy program. We work hard to meet the individual needs of every partici-pant as they strive for excellence.Research shows that students who begin their day with physical activity will have increased success in their aca-demic pursuits. Furthermore, participation in a sport acad-emy presents an opportunity to develop friendships and ca-maraderie in a team atmosphere while receiving mentorship from highly skilled coaches and instructors.

PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMIES

After a year of skill development and exploration in grade 7, stu-dents are able to enter our Dance Academy program in grade 8. In this academy, students receive extensive skill development in a range of dance genres, including tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, and more. Students will participate in the semester-end Dance Show.

Dance Academy - Grade 8 and 9 Only Dance Academy has 40 spots available for registration. Students will work in various groupings in our two dance tanks under the direction of our two highly-skilled dance instructors.

Dance Academy runs daily from 7:40 am - 9:10 am. Students have the option of taking Dance Academy for one semester or for the full year. This is declared at the time of registration.

The cost of dance academy is $350. Preferably, the academy program fee is paid in full at the time of registration; however, a 50% deposit, with the remaining 50% paid in full by mid-term, is available. After a year of skill development and exploration in grade 7, stu-dents are able to enter our Jazz Band Academy program in grade 8. Students will receive intensive skill development related to the Jazz genre. With a small group of no more than 20 students, our band instructor will work to develop the capacity of our future jazz musicians. Students will participate in a variety of workshops and performances throughout the year.

ACADEMY REGISTRATION

Sport and Dance Academies are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis with online registration opening at the end of May for the next school year. Firm dates will be communicated via email, our website, and our social media accounts.

Jazz Band Academy is filled based on a recommendation from Mr. de Sousa, our instructor. Mr. de Sousa will reach out to families in May and those who are interested can proceed to register for the next school year.

Because academy students need to be placed in a specific homeroom for scheduling purposes, no registrations are accepted after the end of August.

Financial assistance for children’s sport programs are available through Canadian Tire Jumpstart and Wood Buffalo Kidsport.

At Holy Trinity, we offer four middle school basketball teams who compete in the Fort McMurray Schools Athletic Association (FMSAA) league. Tier 1 basketball teams are for our student athletes who have demonstrated a high level of skill and will be competing against the best basketball players in Fort McMurray. Our Tier 2 basketball teams are for our student athletes who love basketball and want to develop their skills to reach the next level. The Holy Trinity Northern Knights’ mid-dle school basketball program has enjoyed a lot of success, competing for and winning multiple city championships at all levels of play.

Volleyball (Tier 1 & Tier 2)Middle School Volleyball runs from September to November for students in Grades 7 to 9. There are chances for you to improve your skills be-cause there are two tiers of teams! Tier 1 teams are for students who have demonstrated high levels of skill and our Tier 2 teams allow for those who are wanting to further develop their skills to reach the next level. Practices run twice a week and there are a few tournaments throughout the season where our student athletes get to meet new people and show off your new skills! The season finishes up with a final tournament where you get to compete for the Championship Banner!

At Holy Trinity, students are given the opportunity to achieve their full ability as a badminton athlete. Our game plan is to combine basic tech-nique, match strategies, physical fitness and practice into our Middle School City Badminton Tournament held each spring. By implementing a positive environment, student athletes not only enjoy participating after school, but they also form great lifelong friendships with their peers as well as a desire to lead an active lifestyle.

CheerCheerleading at Holy Trinity is a competitive sport re-volving around a short routine that combines dance, gymnastics, and stunting elements. Cheerleading builds self-esteem, physical endurance and leadership skills. The Middle School cheerleading team will be attending a minimum of 2 provincially hosted competitions throughout the year as well as other school sporting events and pep rallies to promote school spirit. All students in grades 7-9 are eligible to try out. No experience required. Please note that Cheerleading runs from September - April!

Do you like to run? Cross Country could be the sport for you. Middle School Cross Country gets started at the beginning of the school year, and keeps going until the end of October. This is an awesome team to be a part of as it can even train you for other sports that our school offers. Just like any of our middle school sports, Grades 7-9 can join! The season consists of one competition in which you will compete against other middle school students in the city - this competition is held in October. Come on out in September to show us what you got!

Track & FieldFor a lot of you, joining our middle-school track team might be the first time you’ve had anything to do with the sport, and for that reason I encourage you to join our team as we have top-of-the-line facilities in which you can train. Like competition at most levels, middle school track and field events encompass sprint and long distance running races, individual and relay options, as well as jumping and throwing events.

Are you looking to grow your golf skills? If so, we would love to have you join our Holy Trinity ‘Golf Club’. Golf provides several physical benefits to the participant as it is a precision club and ball sport. For our golf club, you will also gain knowledge surrounding the rules and regulation of golf, as well as the etiquette of the game. As a group we look forward to hitting the links and practicing our skills!

SoccerThe Northern Knights Middle School soccer team is looking for play-ers to join their team. Soccer is a global game being the most popular sport throughout the world. Playing soccer involves several basic skills such as passing/shooting, dribbling and controlling (or trapping) the ball. As a team, we will work on the technical control of the ball, tac-tical techniques - players thinking deeply about the game and physical conditioning by building endurance, speed, agility and strength.

Student Council has been revamped to have our students across grades 7-12 take more leadership roles in our school. Holy Trinity holds student elections with campaigns for grade level represen-tatives, but everyone is welcome to join! Our Stu-dent Council meets regularly to plan spirit days, pep rallies, winter carnival, UKnighted lunches, wellness days and many fun school events! We have even led professional development for our teachers to promote our activities and ideas. We work hard to build a positive student culture at Holy Trinity! Our school spirit is on the rise and our events help make Holy Trinity such a wonder-ful place to be!

The Holy Trinity Anime Club runs once a week during Middle School lunch. It is a safe place for anyone who likes anime (a style of Japanese film and television animation) to come and hang out while engaging in anime film, discussions and cre-ating their own anime!

Auditioned free after school clubs open to all students at Trinity! Students can audition for as many as they choose. If selected students attend a weekly after school rehearsal learning choreog-raphy for the semester end recital. Dance troupe is led and choreographed by senior dance students and supervised by Heather Naowakhun (Dance Academy teacher). Styles for the semester and how many troupes vary. Some previous troupe styles include: hip hop, urban, contemporary, jazz, kpop and tap.

Students of all ages, levels and styles are invited to audition to be a part of our team. To be able to use our love of dance to spread a message to those who are watching. Successful candidates with heart, soul and drive will be selected and placed in various genres. Genres of experience are; Hip Hop, Lyrical, Jazz, Musical Theatre and Acrobatics. The Competitive Team is subject to a Fee of $200. This fee is credited towards the final balance of Registration and Costumes for the Season. Families are provided fundraising activities and volunteer opportunities up until the conclusion of the season, to help offset the additional costs.

The Holy Trinity GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) is a student group for all LGBTQ2S+ Students and Allies in our school. The GSA meets every week and provides students with a chance to socialize, increase peer support, listen to guest speakers from the community, participate in wellness activities, and plan events to celebrate diversity in our school (like Pride Week!) Students from the GSA also have the chance to attend the annual Alberta GSA Conference. This is a safe space where everyone is welcome and uniqueness is celebrated!
