COURSE OVERVIEWSTATEMENT OF NEEDThe 2019 Stanford Hand Surgery and Therapy Symposium is intended to meet the educational needs of a national audience of hand surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, hand therapists, and allied health professionals who are interested in current evidence-based hand surgery and therapy guidelines. This comprehensive symposium will address new surgical approaches and therapeutic treatment strategies based on cutting-edge clinical advances and new research findings. Participants will have multiple opportunities for discussion and close interaction with course faculty through lectures, question-and-answer sessions, case presentations, and concurrent breakout sessions. This program also includes a hand therapist exam review, journal club discussing the most salient journal articles of the year and hands-on cadaver skills labs and workshops.

TARGET AUDIENCEThis national program is designed for physicians, allied health professionals, and hand therapists specializing in hand surgery and orthopedic surgery.

LEARNING OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:• Critically assess individual current practices to determine

congruency with the current standards of care.• Evaluate routine preoperative antibiotics in order to deem

necessary for simple hand procedures.• Develop effective strategies to address all facets of treatment of

distal radius fractures.• Identify the best practices as supported by the literature for

treatment of hand and upper limb fractures, compressive neuropathies, arthritis, ligament injuries with hand therapy, and Dupuytren’s contracture.

• Improve surgical skills performance by integrating techniques and approaches during hands-on bioskills labs.

ACCREDITATIONThe Stanford University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

CREDIT DESIGNATIONThe Stanford University School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 15.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The California Board of Registered Nursing recognizes that Continuing Medical Education (CME) is acceptable for meeting RN continuing education requirements as long as the course is certified for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM (rn.ca.gov). Nurses will receive a Certificate of Participation following this activity that may be used for license renewal.
