2018 GIVING CAMPAIGN RESULTS

An active and challenging final day of giving ushered out the fourth annual Great Fish Commu-nity Challenge on Friday the 14th of September. The campaign eclipsed many high marks from previous years with over 1,653 donations and $600,000 in contributions during the final week of the Challenge. On the last day, 482 donations were accepted despite an internet outage late that afternoon. The 50 participating nonprofits–a record–collectively tallied just over $1,905,479–another record–with an increase of more than $300,000 over last year’s total.

Whitefish Community Foundation announced a 51% match at the 2018 Great Fish Awards Celebration on October 18th. A grand total of $2,406,810 was distributed, which included special awards recognizing the outstanding work and participation of several charities in the Challenge.

Of the $1,905,479 raised by the nonprofits in the Challenge, $920,717 was eligible to be matched. All 50 charities raised more than the $5,000 minimum required to receive a match and 38 of the charities raised more than $20,000, the maximum amount eligible to be matched. The 51% match translated into an additional $10,200 maximum grant for charities that raised or exceeded $20,000 through the campaign. The Foundation awarded $468,931 in matching grants.

At the awards event, several charities received spe-cial recognition and an award for their outstanding participation. Many of the awards took the receiv-ing organization by surprise. The most prestigious is the annual Great Fish Award that is accompanied by a $5,000 grant. This year’s award went to the North Valley Music School, recognizing their outstanding participation in all areas of the Great Fish Community Challenge for several years in a row. The music school had the second largest number of donors in the cam-paign and excelled in all areas of community outreach to promote the Challenge.

The North Valley Hospital Foundation received the Russ and Mary Jane Street Community Service Award and an additional $2,500 grant to recognize their valuable work in our community and their outstanding participation in the Great Fish Commu-nity Challenge and Color Run.

Flathead Rapids Youth Soccer received the Doris Schumm Community Spirit Award and a $2,500 grant. The Rapids were chosen for this award because of the dedication they demonstrated throughout the Challenge.

The Howard family increased the Jean Howard Memorial Award to $5,000 this year and select-ed Flathead Cancer Aid Services as the recipient. This annual award recognizes a charity for providing outstanding service in the health and human services field, which is an area that is very near and dear to the Howard family.

Three new awards made the campaign even more exciting. Whitefish Legacy Partners received the Biggest Catch Award, and $2,500 for receiving the largest number of donations in the Challenge. White-fish Legacy Partners received over 207 donations during the Challenge, more than any other charity. The new Corporate Citizenship Award was present-ed to the ZaneRay Group, which encouraged their employees to donate to the Challenge and immedi-ately matched each employee gift dollar for dollar. ZaneRay directed the $2,500 cash award to Flathead Cancer Aid Services. The Exceptional Volunteer Award was created to recognize the importance of nonprofit volunteers, including those volunteers who helped with the Great Fish Community Challenge. Don Best-wick received this new honor, and he directed the $2,500 cash award to The Abbie Shelter.

The Mic Drop charity winner was the Nate Chute Foundation, which received a $1,000 grant thanks to the outstanding performance and lyrics by Eric Kanter.

During the 7-week campaign, the Foundation award-ed several incentive grants of $500 or more to inspire even more community giving. In all, over $32,000 was distributed through the incentive and special grants programs, in addition to the match.

The Circle of Giving is a unique group of generous individuals that see the value of philanthropy because of what it can to do change lives. The Circle is the backbone of the Great Fish Community Challenge. Circle donors give an annual unrestricted gift of $5,000 or more to the Whitefish Community Foundation, part of which goes to fund the Great Fish Community Challenge Match. This funding is combined with undesignated gifts to the Friends of the Great Fish Match to come up with the percentage match for the Great Fish Community Chal-lenge. By providing the match for the Great Fish Community Challenge, the Circle is not only substantially increasing the impact of each participating organization’s fund-raising efforts during the giving period, it is inspiring our community to give!

INCENTIVE GRANT WINNERFarm Hands–Nourish the Flathead received a $500 grant sponsored by First Interstate Bank for the nonprofit with the most runners signed up.
