SCHEDULECATTLE

CATTLEThe cattle competitions at the IGA Perth Royal Show are some of the oldest competitions held at the Showground and considered to be among the most prestigious in Australia. They benchmark industry excellence and reward the achievements of Western Australian cattle breeders. The program includes breed judging, junior judging and a commercial auction. The quality of animals is always high and competition is tough.

The competitions draw around 400 beef cattle from 19 different beef breeds including Angus, Charolais, Dexter, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Murray Grey, Red Angus, Red Poll and Simmental. Exhibitors also compete with dairy cattle from the four dairy breeds, Guernsey, Holstein, Illawarra and Jersey.

MISSION STATEMENT

To provide a forum that can enhance the knowledge of all stakeholders in the Western Australian Beef and Dairy industries by showcasing breed aesthetic diversity and excellence, whilst implementing the highest level of standards in animal welfare, product integrity, biosecurity and production efficiency for national and international consumers.

Harris Thompson

RACHEL WILLIAMS Young Judges Beef Cattle Paraders 2017 WA State Champion

I was born and raised on a sheep and cattle farming operation. My parents ran White Lakes Limousin and Angus studs. My family now run a commercial cow herd and I help maintain the cows and the farm as much as I can. I have been around the West Australian cattle show scene all my life.

I completed my schooling to yr 12 and got a job at the mount barker regional cattle saleyards. Where I performed the daily tasks of minting the complex and running the weekly sale. I was employed there for four years. For the last three years I have had the privilege of going to the Sydney Royal Show and put the West Australian cattle through the show for various studs in the state. I love agriculture in all its forms and want to stay in the industry as much as possible.

HARRIS THOMPSON Young Judges Beef Cattle Judging 2017 WA State Champion

I am a 9th generation cattle farmer who is passionate about the cattle industry and a partner in our family owned business, Venturon Livestock, located in the South West farming district of Boyup Brook, Western Australia. We run a broad acre farming operation incorporating a commercial cattle herd, Venturon Charolais and Mighty Murray Grey studs.

From an early age I developed a keen interest in cattle judging and showing and have won the Western Australian Junior Beef Cattle Judges Final in 2014 and 2017 at the Perth Royal Show.

In 2016 I won the Murray Grey Youth Ambassador Award and travelled to New Zealand. Whilst there, I competed in and won the 2016 New Zealand Young Judges Championship Beef Cattle at the Canterbury A & P Show.

I have judged at Agricultural Shows in Western Australia and was associate judge for the Shorthorn Breed at the 2017 IGA Perth Royal Show and have judged at BEEF Australia 2018.

I look forward to representing Western Australia at the 2018 National finals in Adelaide.

KELLY MANNING FCAS Dairy Cattle Paraders Championship National Final Winner at the 2015 Sydney Royal Easter Show

Winning the 2015 FCAS Young Judges Dairy Cattle Paraders Championship National Final in Sydney, at the Royal Easter Show, was an extremely rewarding experience whilst doing something I love.

Although having grown up of the family’s beef farm, my love for showing cattle only came about 6 years ago whilst attending the WA Youth Cattle Handlers Camp for the very first time as a junior. I started off with beef cattle paraders, and then in later years I wanted to broaden my skills and also learn about dairy cattle parading.

I was fortunate enough to attend the National All Breeds Dairy Youth Camp in Melbourne in January 2015, after winning the dairy handlers at the WA Youth Cattle Handlers Camp. This then allowed me to build on my skills and meet young people within the dairy industry like myself, on the other side of the county.

Today I try to be involved in shows as much as possible, still learning and meeting new people. I am also now able to give back to the WA Youth Cattle Handlers Camp as a leader to help other kids who are keen like I was.

Overall, my experience has been very humbling. Going across to Sydney to represent Western Australia was an honour and an incredible experience to be able to compete on a much larger scale.

It was hugely surprising winning the National Final. I am very grateful and I would recommend it to anyone with a passion for this industry.

I credit the WA Youth Cattle Handlers Camp for igniting my passion showing cattle and helping me get to where I am today, and I would like to thank the Royal Agricultural Society of WA for their continued support for fantastic opportunities like these. They are important for the future of our cattle industry.

JAI THOMAS Young Judges Dairy Cattle Judging 2017 WA State Champion

I am the third generation of my family to be involved in showing cattle at the Perth Royal Show. My grandfather exhibited Illawarra cattle from 1975 until my father took over in 1992. I started helping my dad at the Show from three years old and have done so ever since. I started my own Shorthorn stud in 2015 and love preparing my cattle for the Perth Royal Show. I have competed in junior judging and parading since I was five, starting with the Archie McClaren parading competition and then when I was old enough working up to the Junior Judging and state paraders competitions. I thrive on learning more about the cattle industry and listening to the judges’ comments. I feel honoured and lucky to be able to go to another show and judge against other young people from other states.

SAM HALLYoung Judges Dairy Cattle Paraders 2017 WA State Champion

I was born and raised in the City of Perth and always passionate about working with Dairy Cattle even though I enjoy watching both beef and dairy cattle at the Show. I discovered that my Great Grandfather was a dairy Farmer in South Africa, this is believed to be where my passion has come from.

I presently attend Harvey Agricultural College where I have been involved in the showing of our school’s Stud Dairy Cattle. Recently, as part of my prize for the WA Youth Cattle Handlers Camp 2017, I got an opportunity through Holstein Australia to participate in Victoria and attend IDW. I won the Sheri Martin Memorial Award for Outstanding Youth Showmanship Skills (Intermediate) and worked alongside very experienced people involved in Victoria’s Dairy Cattle Industry. These people were happy to share their knowledge and expertise with me. This has given me an opportunity to enhance my skills in the preparation and showing of Stud Dairy Cattle. I hope my future consists of more learning opportunities which also may include my passion for genetics and breeding of Dairy Cattle.

PART THREE CARCASE COMPETITION

Carcases will be judged according to the Australian Beef Carcase Appraisal System (ABCAS) utilising the scientific principals of Meat Standards Australia (MSA). A more detailed description is available from RASWA upon request. All exhibits will remain in the class to which they were assigned on the hoof i.e. a Lightweight exhibit will be judged as a Lightweight exhibit on the hook. However, carcases will be judged depending on which carcase category they fall into which are determined by the Hot Standard Carcase Weight (HSCW) of the exhibit. Animals within an individual class may be judged across one or more carcase weight categories depending on the spread of carcase weights in that individual class. The fat requirements for each category are outlined in the table below. These will be the categories used for judging under the ABCAS system. Exhibitors are required to predict what carcase weight their exhibit will be and ensure they have correct fat depths for that category. If a carcase has a fat depth in the correct range, then it will score maximum points. If carcases are over or under fat, it is a sliding scale for points allocation. The ideal fat depths for carcases in the Carcase Competition are as follows for the different HSCW categories:

Carcase Category Weight P8 Rib fat

A. Light domestic 100.0 - 180.0kg 4 - 8mm 3 - 6mm

B. Medium domestic 180.1 - 240.0kg 6 - 10mm 4 - 7mm

C. Heavy domestic 240.1 - 300.0kg 8 - 12mm 5 - 9mm

D. Export (EU, Japan) 300.1 - 400.0kg 10 - 14mm 7 - 11mm

The measured fat depth of a carcase must fall within this range to gain maximum points. Points allocation using ABCAS scoring system. 1. Market specifications (20 points)

Total 100 *A 5 point penalty will be applied if fat colour is greater than 3, if the animal exhibits blood splash or at the carcase Judge’s discretion. **To receive eating quality points, carcases must meet the minimum MSA carcase specifications: 1. Minimum of 3mm of rib fat 2. Adequate fat distribution 3. pH of 5.70 or less 4. Meat colour 1b and no greater than 3

Any carcases which fail any of the above requirements will receive a score of 0/45 for eating quality. ***Eating quality points are calculated using the predicted MSA eating quality scores of 35 cut by cook combinations (100 CMQ4 score points each) of economic importance in the carcase, giving a score out of 3500 and adjusted back to a score out of 45. The eating quality score will be highest in

carcases with low TBC, no HGPs, low ossification and high

marbling.
