Principles of Family Support

1 Staff and families work together in relationships based on equality and respect.

2 Staff enhance families’ capacity to support the growth and development of all family members – adults, youth and children.

3 Families are resources to their own members, to other families, to programs, and to communities.

4 Programs affirm and strengthen families’ cultural, linguistic and racial identities and enhance their ability to function in a multicultural society.

5 Programs are embedded in their communities and contribute to the community building process.

6 Programs advocate with families for services and systems that are fair, responsive, and

accountable to the families served.

7 Practitioners work with families to mobilize formal and informal resources to support

family development.

8 Programs are flexible and continually responsive to emerging family and community issues.

9 Principles of family support are modeled in all program activities, including planning,

governance and administration.

To our participants, donors, volunteers and friends:

Fiscal Year 2018 was another year of growth that we are excited to share with you. For the 43rd year Family Focus has continued to successfully provide evidence-based high-quality family support services for Chicagoland families. Here are some highlights:

• Our programs are growing. After opening a new Family Advocacy Center at our Family Focus Lawndale center in mid-2017, the number of participants served through the Family Advocacy Centers (a partnership with the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS)) has increased from 437 in FY17 to 2,170 in FY18. The Family Advocacy Centers serve families that were reported for suspected abuse or neglect with the goal to reunite families. Our early childhood development services are projected to grow by an additional 1,000 participants served in FY19 due to increased grant awards in FY18 from the Illinois State Board of Education Prevention Initiative and the Maternal Infant Early Childhood Home Visiting program. We are also continuing to partner with peer organizations to extend our program reach. In collaboration with the Ounce of Prevention Fund, Family Focus is exploring the potential effect of a pilot program to saturate a new community with early childhood development services. We also continue to serve and engage fathers through the Power of Father’s initiative in partnership with Children’s Home + Aid, Fathers Families and Healthy Communities and Metropolitan Family Services.

• Our financial forecast is healthy. After the disruption faced by many organizations in the summer of 2017 due to the state budget impasse, staff continued to streamline operations and advocate for the increase in administrative overhead costs in grants. Thanks to advocacy in which Family Focus staff played a leadership role, funders have increased the allowable amount of administration costs for grants. This shift ensures that additional funds go towards programs that directly impact our families. Staff has worked tirelessly to reduce the costs of rented space, create a more mobile-friendly workforce, and review and reduce operations costs. As a result of these continued efforts the Family Focus Board of Directors approved a balanced budget for FY19.

• Our data collection and evaluation methods are advancing. Bridgespan is a highly regarded nonprofit consultation firm and Family Focus was selected by local funders for the “Leading for Impact” program which is a two-year consultation project assisting Family Focus to maximize our expertise in designing and evaluating programs with maximum impact for participants and their families. We are working to upgrade data collection and analysis to continuously improve our programs and provide accurate reporting to our many constituencies.

It is because of these accomplishments and more that we extend our gratitude to our donors, volunteers, staff, corporate partners, private and public funders, and participants for sharing our passion to nurture children by strengthening families. We look forward to another year of supporting Chicagoland families. Thank you for your continued partnership. Please visit our website at www.family-focus.org to learn more and discover how you can join the movement to support families and children in need.

Warm regards,

Vaughn Gordy Merri ExChair, Board of Directors President and CEO
