CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT
Welcome to 2018!
The Talkback committee have bounded into the year with a
lot of energy.
We are very excited about some changes for Talkback this
year. Our website upgrade has begun, and we will have a
fresh new look for Talkback. We will add interesting
information about aphasia. We will make it easy to use. We
will have more personal stories from people with aphasia,
and their families. If you would like to share your experience
with aphasia, please let us know. You never know how your
story about aphasia can help other people.
Our Facebook page is constantly updated. Here are some recent interesting articles from our
Facebook page:
How aphasia inspired one of the most famous children's books of all time – the BFG.
Read our profile of Patricia Neal. She was Roald Dahl’s wife, and she experienced
aphasia.
The co-authors of ‘Healing The Broken Brain’ appeared on The Doctors and shared
their story of David's stroke at age 10.

Can #Snapchat play a role in helping individuals with #aphasia in sharing their daily

If you want some help to use Facebook, you could join the Talkback computer club. The
classes are designed to help with your goals and our members find the computer club very

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT
I am delighted to introduce our brilliant new office manager Emma Miyake! Emma saw our
advertisement for an office manager in our last Talkback newsletter. Emma has a lot of very
specialised experience with computing and management. Emma also has experience with
aphasia, because Emma’s mum June is living with aphasia. We are very excited to have
Emma joining our team. She has already made some great changes and we are very grateful
to have her.
Emma will be in our Talkback office every week. Please feel free to drop in to have a chat or
look at the resources.

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT
We have a very special raffle about to begin, you could win tickets to see two highly
acclaimed theatre productions from the State Theatre Company. The prizes were donated to
Talkback, and we are very grateful for such a generous offer of support. The money raised
from the raffle will go towards supporting Talkback members to attend the 2018 November
AAA conference in Maroochydore in Queensland. See inside this newsletter for more details
about the raffle.
Our social committee have planned the first social event for 2018. See the flyer in this
newsletter and save the date for Saturday April 7th! The prize for the raffle will be drawn at
this social event.
We have lots of fun ideas for social events this year, please contact Elle if you have an idea or
a request for a social event. We love hearing from you and we want your input! Elle can be
reached on 0417 016 967 or [email protected].
One of our goals this year is to build strong connections between our Talkback groups.
Coralie Hayley and the Hove Talkback group started this with their Showcase event last year.
We want to help people with aphasia in South Australia feel connected and part of the aphasia
community.
The AAA (Australian Association for Aphasia) has a new Chairperson – Linda Worrell.
Linda is a world leader in the field of aphasia research and she has so much knowledge about
aphasia. She is building links between the different aphasia associations around Australia. We
are very excited to develop stronger links with the other states. We are looking forward to
the different ideas and approaches other associations have, and we want to share anything
new and interesting with you.

Talkback Association for Aphasia has some exciting radio interviews planned this year. Our
aim is to spread awareness of aphasia and to connect people to the Talkback Association
for Aphasia.
We will be talking on 101.5FM Radio Adelaide on Thursday 14th June at 2pm. and
Thursday 13th September at 2pm. We would love you to tune in!
We welcome ideas for topics to discuss during our interviews and we welcome Talkback
members to participate.

Help for people who require
carparking
BlueBays displays the location of metered and not-metered accessible car park spaces in
South Australia. This app empowers you to collect, map and share the locations of
accessible car parking spaces that you visit. By adding a car park space, you are just not
sharing the location, but additional useful information such as the Park Level, Space
Type and any other comments that will help someone else have a better experience.
Finding a BlueBay is simply a matter of searching your current location on the map, or
searching in a destination location. In helping you make the most of your experience we
recommend you read the brief user guide found inside the application.

TALKBACK RETUNE CHOIR…
Retune is the first choir in South Australia for people with aphasia and their carers.
The choir started in May 2011 and is still going strong! Its first rehearsal for 2018
started with a great turn out and some new choir members. The choir welcomes
back its fabulous accompanist Lydia Dobbin for another year as well as its
conductor Rowan Harding. Rowan is a registered music therapist with the
Australian Music Therapy Association and a nationally touring performer at
events such as WOMADelaide, Woodford Folk Festival and the National Folk
Festival.
Singing and music therapy help retune the connections of the brain by developing
familiar sounds and words to encourage the rediscovery of speech.
Choirs have been found to improve the lives of people living with aphasia through
exercising the speech and linguistic centres of the brain.
The choir has been choosing some new and more challenging pieces while
continuing to improve their singing ability. They have been choosing to sing well
known classics from artists such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Queen and The
Seekers to Adele and Otis Redding. It doesn’t matter whether you are a confident
singer or not, the main aim of the choir is for people with aphasia to get out there
and make some new friends while singing some great music! At the end of each
term the choir holds a small performance in which all friends, family and
community are welcome to come and join in with the choir and hear the wonderful
sounds they have been creating.
The choir runs in four nine week blocks per year, to coincide with school terms.
We have a performance and afternoon tea at the end of each term. The rehearsals
and concerts are held in The Sanctuary, Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre 207-
235 Hampstead Road Northfield, South Australia. Our next concert will be held
on 4th April at 2:00 pm at The Sanctuary, Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre. All
are welcome to come along. If you would like to join the choir, please call the

Australian Aphasia Association
National Conference
The date for the 2018 AAA National Conference has been
announced!
The conference is being held in Maroochydore - in the beautiful
Sunshine Coast.
Save the Date for the 26th & 27th November, 2018.
We will be looking for expressions of interest from members
who want to attend and present at the conference.
The committee is very excited about this conference and many of
us are planning to attend. It will be fantastic to have a strong
Talkback presence at this conference!

CHIT CHAT
Three months have passed by. It’s pretty scary, it will be Christmas again soon!
I had a really nice Christmas, I hope you did.
I enjoyed a lovely break with my family at Robe and in Hamilton, Victoria.
Hendon Talkback Group enjoyed our Christmas lunch at the Henley Beach Hotel, with
partners. The food, and the view, is always good at the Henley Beach Hotel. We were
eating, drinking and chatting about seeing everyone again in the New Year and here we are
already back again at Talkback!
It’s been a good summer this year, pretty hot, but generally a good summer. If it gets too, too
hot, put the cooler on and then have an icecream. Oh, and also, cool me down with a very
cold glass of Moscato!! (yep, I had one or two cold drinks - you have to, don’t you!?). After
all, Christmas is a celebration!
Now it’s almost Easter – Easter Bunny, chocolate, hot cross buns – but hang on - more
chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. Doesn’t everyone love chocolate!
I hope everyone enjoys your Easter weekend and remembers why Christian people celebrate
Easter.
You may have seen my eldest granddaughter Sienna a few times in the Newsletter with her
acting performances at Theatre Bugs. Now my youngest granddaughter Lilah (8 years), is
starting with Theatre Bugs.

I thought you might have a look at my older daughter’s work.
Jo had been face painting professionally for 7 years at events
and birthday parties around Adelaide. Her business is called
“FizzBubble Face Painting” and she loves her job as she is
always part of a happy occasion. Last year in May, she was
invited to be an instructor at FABAIC (Face and Body Art
International Convention) in Orlando in the USA – it was a big
deal! That month, one of her designs and photos was on the
front cover of the Silly Farm Newsletter which goes out with every order all over the globe.
Silly Farm is the biggest supplier of face and body painting products in the world.
Jo paints for the Adelaide Strikers and the Adelaide Crows.

A story about a special person I have met at Acacia Talkback – her name is Eloise…
Almost 5½ years ago I had a stroke.
About 4½ years ago I was introduced to Eloise Gatto at Acacia Court, Hendon.
Eloise had just been appointed as the speech pathologist there.
I spent 1 hour on Monday and Thursday to improve my speech, writing and reading.
Without Eloise I would not have been able to improve myself so much.
Despite our age difference, we actually had fun with our sessions. I had been getting so
frustrated at having aphasia but Eloise was very patient and we enjoyed our time together.
Then she introduced me to Talkback. That was a good thing because I’m still going to our
Talkback Group once a week at Hendon.
Eloise and I immediately became firm friends at Acacia.
Sadly, she had to leave us when she got a permanent job at Novita Children’s Services where
she works with children. Eloise has now been at Novita for 3½ years and she loves her job.
We still keep in regular contact and chat to each other by email.
We also have regular lunches just to catch up.
And now – Eloise is married!!!
I was lucky enough to see her at the Church (Francis Xavier in Wakefield Street).
She was a beautiful bride.
I’m sure Eloise and Bobby will have a very long and happy marriage.
I am looking forward to seeing her wedding photos at our next catch up lunch in April.

Second Ditto: Kerosene.
Two days later the first cocky, with no horse this time, met the second cocky in much the
same place.
Second Cocky: Mornin’.
First Ditto: That horse of mine died when I give ‘im the kerosene.
Second Cocky: So did mine.
First Ditto: Mornin’.

FLYING THE WESTERN PLAINS

They say the West is fading and its light is going out
They say we won’t recover from the current years of drought
But time will bring a charge and the charge will bring the rains
And the land will come to life all across the West Plains
Then I’ll fuel the Piper’s wing tanks and check that she is sound
And let her have her head as she begs to leave the ground
Then we’ll set out on a tango over all the land I know
To see the birth of nature on the county far below
I’ll see the country breathing and know the joy it brings
To watch the flooded Darling spreading out beneath my wings
From the rocky dawn to White Cliffs to Cuttaburra moon
Where golden Paroo sunsets shine like honey on a spoon
I’ll set the wiry Warrego cut loose across the sand
With the yabbies reaching upward as the lignum flats expand
The Culgoa will shake loose the narrow channel where it hides
And the wild fowl grow fat on the bounty it provides
The stands of Gidgee smelling like a new world being born
And the softer country offering sea of grass and thorn
We’ll fly past Gundabooka where the creek is flowing free
And the ancient ghosts are gathering for a corroboree
Then when the day is fading I will turn her nose around
And in the softest sunset, drop her gently to the ground
And then you try and tell me that the Western land dead
While the visions of its birth are still running through my head
A cycle is a circle and the drought is just a part
Though it’s wounded many families and broken many hearts

Volunteering with Talkback, Acacia Court…
Jessica Black, Speech Pathology graduate of 2017 and Talkback volunteer
Over the past year I have been volunteering across a number of Talkback groups,
most recently at Acacia Court on Friday mornings.
I enjoy being involved with Talkback as it allows me to support a community to
strengthen their communication skills. As a new clinician, it also assists me in
developing a deeper understanding of how aphasia can look so different from one
person to the next and how I can best support people with it.
Beyond this, I have found myself looking forward to volunteering each week for the
chat and laughter. Whether it’s over Australia’s most recent political scandal or a
rarely upheld two-photo-maximum rule, the Acacia Court group is not short on
humour.
Due to the limited awareness around aphasia, I feel that Talkback is such a valuable
organisation and I am proud to be a volunteer. As I enter the workforce I hope to use
my role as a speech pathologist to raise awareness and understanding of aphasia
and educate people on how to be supportive communication partners.

Why not try Jessica Black’s homemade Easter Fudge…
Three Ingredient Cadbury Crème Egg Fudge
A simple and delicious recipe, just in time for Easter
Ingredients
1 pack of mini Cadbury Creme Eggs - you
can use two if you want an extra decadent
fudge!
2 x 220g blocks of milk chocolate
390g tin of condensed milk
Instructions
1. Line a 20cm square cake tin with baking paper – make sure you leave plenty of
paper hanging over the sides to help you remove the fudge once it has set.
2. Pour the condensed milk into a medium saucepan over low heat and add the milk
chocolate – which has been broken into squares.
3. Cook the condensed milk and chocolate mixture and stir regularly until the
chocolate has melted and the ingredients have combined.
4. Remove the saucepan from the heat and pour the fudge into the prepared tin
before quickly (and carefully) pushing the Cadbury Creme Eggs into it. Place the
fudge into the fridge for a minimum of 6 hours (preferably overnight) to set.
5. Remove the set fudge from the fridge and cut into squares.

SELF-WATERING GARDENS BEDS……
One of our Talkback members has built a
‘Wicking garden bed’.
In a wicking garden bed, the plants are watered
from underneath!
This garden bed is structured so that the water is
collected in a layer of gravel at the bottom of the
garden bed.
The water then ‘wicks’ up into the soil.
These garden beds are very good for dry arid
areas.
They use less water over the long Adelaide
summers.

The Talkback Group at
Acacia Court is for
people with aphasia as a
result of stroke or brain injury. Members get together on a weekly basis to socialise and
practice their communication in a supportive environment. This can be an important step in
gaining confidence to communicate in other situations. The photo shows some of our
members having a good time together.
We have 10 members of varying ages and with varying levels of aphasia, but we all enjoy the
group. At a recent session, members were asked what they would like others to know about
the group. The overwhelming theme was that the group was very close and supportive.
Everyone is very helpful and patient
Just like one big family
We don’t know other groups, but we are close and support each other
It’s good. All very open about talking about our personal matters
If you have aphasia, think about whether a group might be helpful for you. You can get
information about current groups from the office and this will soon be updated on the
website.

The group meets on Thursdays 2:15- 3:30pm at North East Wellness, Greenacres, 21/19 Fosters Rd, Greenacres.

FMC TALKBACK GROUP
‘The FMC Talkback Group is run by speech
pathologist Megan Hide and also our
volunteer John. The group provides a
supported environment to practice
communication strategies, generalise skills
and work towards both personal and group
goals. Members are encouraged to bring
along personal items or news articles to
facilitate group discussion, and also have the
opportunity to use verbal/written language
or AAC to recount particular events they have been involved in recently.

COMPUTER CLUB
The computer club meets every Monday at
1:30pm at the Burnside Library. Coffee and
chat follows after each session. The computer
club will continue to be largely run by student
volunteers.
