Challenges for ChildrenMany people have memories of playing in playgrounds at parks. Some

children like climbing on jungle gyms while others like the slides or swings. However, from the 1990s, more and more people began to think thatplaygrounds were too dangerous. As a result, many cities in the United Statesbegan to ( 28 ). In these new playgrounds, the climbing bars were lower, and the ground was softer. As a result, there were fewer chances for children toget hurt.

Even so, some people do not think that such changes are good forchildren. Ellen Sandseter, a professor at Queen Maud University College inNorway, says that playgrounds help children to grow. For example, whenchildren try to climb to a high place, they often feel afraid. However, they keeptrying to climb to high places. As a result, ( 29 ), they start to feel lessscared. This shows that when children try difficult things by themselves againand again, they can learn not to be afraid. Sandseter believes that modernplaygrounds do not have enough challenges.

This causes a problem for parents. They want their children to facechallenges and learn new things, but they also do not want their children to gethurt. Hoping to solve this problem, local governments in the United States havestarted ( 30 ) for playgrounds. They hope to build playgrounds that willprovide exciting and fun challenges for children in a safe environment.

(28) 1 change the swings 2 stop building climbing bars3 build safer playgrounds 4 close their parks

(29) 1 after many times 2 with their parents’ help3 in a safe place 4 when they are careful

(30) 1 giving people money 2 asking children to pay3 making different problems 4 looking at new designs

The Recycled OrchestraIn wealthy countries like the United States and Japan, recycling is a popular

way to protect the environment. However, in many poorer countries, recycling is animportant way for people to make money. Adults and children look throughgarbage to find metal and other valuable things to sell. In this way, they can makejust enough money to pay for food and housing. In South America, there are townswhere many of the people make their money by doing this. One such place isCateura, Paraguay.

Life in Cateura is sometimes difficult. Families have little money, and mostchildren have to quit school and start working when they are still young. However,a man named Favio Chavez has been trying to make their lives better. Chavezmoved to Cateura in 2006 and soon started to offer music lessons to children in thearea. These lessons became very popular, but he did not have enough musicalinstruments for all of them to practice with.

Chavez decided to work with local people to make new musical instrumentsusing garbage collected in the town. First, he worked with Nicolas Gomez to createviolins and guitars using old salad bowls and forks. Then, with Tito Romero, hecreated clarinets using bottle caps, spoons, and buttons. With hard work and care, the men were able to create instruments that sounded like the real ones.

Chavez was able to teach hundreds of children in Cateura how to playinstruments. Now, many of the children play in an orchestra called the RecycledOrchestra. They have the chance to travel to different countries to giveperformances, and they use the money that they make to pay for school and tosupport their families. Thanks to the Recycled Orchestra, the children and theirfamilies now have a better future to look forward to.
