Last Time OutThe No. 25-ranked University of Michigan women’s basketball team opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run and never looked back, defeating Ohio, 74-61, on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 25) inside the Convocation Center.

Senior Katelynn Flaherty started the fourth quarter with six straight points, four on two layups and a pair at the free throw line, to give Michigan a 55-46 lead at the 8:30 mark. Flaherty found junior Hallie Thome in transition a few plays later, pushing Michigan’s run to open the frame at 8-0 with 7:14 remaining. Flaherty made good on another pair of free throws to cap the run at 10-0 with 6:21 to go. Flaherty followed with a pair of triples over the next several possessions to keep Ohio at bay, scoring 18 of her 31 points in the final frame to seal the game for Michigan.

Flaherty once again led the Wolverine offense, record-ing the 11th 30-point game of her career with 31 points on 10-for-22 shooting. Thome turned in her sec-ond double-double of the season, going for 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting and grabbing 13 rebounds. Senior Jillian Dunston just missed out on a double-double, scoring nine points with a game-high 14 rebounds. U-M held a 50-31 advantage on the glass in the game.

Michigan called timeout facing a 29-25 deficit, its larg-est of the game, at the 2:35 mark of the second quarter but answered with four straight points from Dunston and Thome to tie the contest at 29. The teams each scored two points over the final stretch of the quarter, sending the game to halftime tied at 31.

In the third quarter, junior Nicole Munger hit her sec-ond triple of the game, followed by Flaherty finding Thome for an easy layup to put the Maize and Blue up six, 40-34 with 6:14 left in the period. Ohio answered with a 6-0 spurt of its own to tie the game at 40 less than a minute later. Michigan followed up with its sec-ond four-point possession of the game as freshman Deja Church scored a layup, was fouled and missed the free throw, but Thome followed with a putback for a four-point lead at the 4:40 mark.

Michigan ended the third quarter with a 49-46 lead, setting up Flaherty’s big fourth quarter.

Michigan in the Big Ten/ACC ChallengeMichigan is 8-2 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, winning its first four games in the annual event. U-M came away with a 92-52 win over Georgia Tech in Atlanta last year. The Wolverines lead the Big Ten in wins with eight in the event. Maryland has nine wins in the event but seven came as a member of the ACC.

Staying in the PollMichigan received its first preseason ranking in the As-sociated Press poll since 2001, coming in at No. 24 this season. U-M has stayed in the poll since then, earning a No. 22 ranking this week. Michigan’s four-week run in

the poll is its second-longest streak in school history. Michigan made nine straight appearances from Nov. 6, 2001 through Jan. 7, 2002.

Early Season ChallengesMichigan is facing its second top-five opponent of the season when it hosts No. 3 Notre Dame. U-M has al-ready faced Louisville, which was No. 5 at the time and now checks in at No. 4. It is the first time in program his-tory that Michigan has faced two top-five opponents in the non-conference portion of the season. U-M is look-ing for its first-ever win over a top-five foe.

Thome Named to Big Ten Honor RollJunior Hallie Thome was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll on Monday (Nov. 27) after av-eraging 23.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game last week. Thome scored 29 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the floor, with a 9-for-12 showing from the free throw line against Oakland (Nov. 22). She followed that up with her second double-double of the season, put-ting in 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting and grabbing 13 boards in a 74-61 road win at Ohio. Thome is 12th na-tionally in field goal percentage (.667).

Flaherty Sets Scoring RecordSenior Katelynn Flaherty continues to put her name in the Michigan and Big Ten record book. On the ca-reer front, Flaherty has officially become Michigan’s career scoring leader after passing Diane Dietz in the last game. Dietz (1978-82) set the record with 2,076 points, which had stood since her graduation in 1982. Flaherty is up to 2,148 points. She is one of six Wol-verines between the men’s and women’s programs to score at least 2,000 points. Flaherty is now 296 points away from Glen Rice’s total of 2,442 and has a chance to leave Michigan as the all-time leading scorer - man or woman.

Flaherty is currently second in the country in points per game (25.8) to Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell. She is also second to Mitchell in active career scoring and three-pointers made.

Freshmen Turning It UpFreshmen Hailey Brown and Deja Church have made an impact on the Wolverines on the young season. Brown has started all five games, reaching double fig-ures in scoring three times and in rebounding twice. She recorded the first double-double of her career in Michigan’s win over Oakland (Nov. 22), going for 10 points and 11 rebounds. Church reached double fig-ures for the first time in her career in that game, scor-ing 11 points. Brown is averaging 8.0 points and 7.4 rebounds in 28.2 minutes per game, with Church turn-ing in 6.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 21.0 minutes per contest. In addition, after missing several weeks due to an illness, Priscilla Smeenge made her career debut at Ohio (Nov. 25).

Thome Holding it Down in the PaintJunior Hallie Thome has continued to have a domi-nant presence in the paint this season, averaging 16.6 points per game on 66.7 percent shooting. She is also grabbing 7.2 rebounds in 30.4 minutes per game. Thome has two double-doubles on the season already after going for 17 points and 13 rebounds at Ohio (Nov. 25). Since opening the season shooting 4-for-11 against George Mason, Thome has gone 26-for-34 from the floor in the last four games (.765). She is Michigan’s career leader in field goal percentage (.624), which is second among active players nationally.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women’s basketball head coach Kim Barnes Arico announced the signing of Amy Dilk, Naz Hillmon, Emily Kiser, Danielle Rauch and Ariel Young to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday (Nov. 8). “I think it is one of the best classes we have coming in since I have been here, from top to bottom,” Barnes Arico said. “It really targets each position that we need, one through five. These five young women are unbelievable basketball players, but they are even better people. They all come from great families, families who are basketball families. They each have a great understanding of the game and what it means to be part of a team. They know what it takes to be at the University of Michigan, on the court, in the classroom and in the com-munity. They understand and embrace how special it is to be able to represent the Block M, not only while they are here, but also after they graduate. We have a lot of great talent in this group, but they want to create something special and win championships together.”

Head Coach Kim Barnes AricoSixth YearMontclair State, ‘93Career W-L: 385-270Michigan W-L: 115-64

Kim Barnes Arico enters her sixth season as the head coach in 2017-18, guiding the Wolverines to

at least 20 wins in each of her five seasons and the 2017 WNIT Champi-onship. She was announced as the ninth head coach in the history of the program on April 20, 2012. Barnes Arico enters the 2017-18 season on the cusp of becoming the win-ningest coach in school history after totaling 111 wins through five seasons. The only coach in program history to have five 20-win seasons, KBA needs just 13 wins to pass Sue Guevara (123 wins) for first on the all-time list. Barnes Arico is first all-time at Michigan in winning percentage (.638) and holds a 70-23 record at Crisler Center during her tenure. U-M has won at least 13 games at Crisler in four of her five seasons, including a record-set-ting 19 wins in 2016-17. KBA has coached 10 players to 14 All-Big Ten citations, including two-time All-Big Ten first teamer Katelynn Flaherty. Flaherty has also earned back-to-back WBCA All-America honorable mentions (2016, 2017) as the only player in school history with multiple honors. Barnes Arico was named the 2017 Big Ten Coach of the Year by the coaches and media, becoming the first consensus winner in school history. Nicole Elmblad also earned back-to-back Academic All-America honors (2014, 2015) and was the recipient of the Medal of Honor in 2015. Barnes Arico also completed a two-year stint with USA Basketball (2014-15), serving as an assistant coach alongside Dawn Staley (South Carolina) and Jeff Walz (Louisville) for the U18 (2014) and U19 (2015) teams. She won a pair of gold medals at the FIBA U19 World Championships in 2015 and at the FIBA U18 America’s Championship in 2014. Barnes Arico led Michigan to its first postseason championship in 2016-2017 as the Wolverines captured the WNIT Championship after being left out of the NCAA Tournament despite a third place finish in the Big Ten. Michigan went 11-5 in conference play to finish alone in third place, its highest finish since 2011 and the second-most Big Ten wins in program his-tory. Flaherty and Hallie Thome each earned All-Big Ten first-team honors to mark the first time U-M had multiple first teamers. The Wolverines re-grouped during the WNIT, reeling off six straight wins for the title. U-M held off Georgia Tech in three overtimes in the championship game to hang its first banner in Crisler. U-M shattered records in 2016-17, setting new program records in wins (28), points (2,846), home wins (19), winning percentage (.756), three-point-ers made (279) and rebounds (1,403). Flaherty became the second player in school history to top 2,000 points (2,019) and Thome became the third sophomore to reach the 1,000-point mark (1,105). Michigan has made the postseason in each of Barnes Arico’s five seasons, highlighted by a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament during the 2012-13 season. U-M has found itself back in the national spotlight as well during KBA’s tenure, returning to the Associated Press poll in January 2013 for the first time in 10 years. Michigan has been ranked six times in the AP poll and four times in the coaches’ poll over the last five years. Prior to joining the Maize and Blue, she spent 10 seasons at the helm of the St. John’s women’s hoops program, building the Red Storm into a national power. She guided St. John’s to four NCAA Tournament appearances, with the Red Storm advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2012.

Barnes Arico compiled a 176-133 overall record and five 20-win campaigns at St. John’s. She was twice named Big East Coach of the Year (2006, 2012) and had 11 of her players earn All-Big East honors and six receive all-rookie team selection. In 2011-12, St. John’s posted a 24-10 overall record and finished second (13-3) in the Big East standings. Barnes Arico was named the 2012 Big East Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the USBWA National Coach of the Year award. St. John’s finished No. 15 in the final USA Today Coaches poll and reached its highest-ever ranking of No. 13 by the Associated Press. The highlight of the 2011-12 season was when Barnes Arico and her Red Storm ended Connecticut’s 99-game home winning streak with a 57-56 win on Feb. 19, 2012, at Gampel Pavilion. It was also the UConn’s first home loss to an unranked opponent in nearly 19 years. Prior to accepting her position at St. John’s, Barnes Arico was extremely successful at NCAA Division II Adelphi (1999-2002). She led the Panthers to three consecutive postseason appearances, posting a 65-24 overall record and a 51-13 league mark. In 2001-02, Adelphi won its first New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tour-nament. The Panthers finished with a 28-3 record and earned the school’s first national ranking in school history, finishing No. 12. Barnes Arico was named the NYCAC, NIT/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Division II and Nas-sau County Sports Commission Outstanding Female Coach of the Year. Barnes Arico started her head coaching career at Fairleigh Dickinson-Mad-ison, a Division III university in New Jersey. She led the Devils to a 13-11 re-cord during the 1996-97 season before accepting the head coaching post at New Jersey Institute of Technology for two seasons (1997-99). Helping the program transition from Division III to Division II, Barnes Arico was named the New Jersey Coach of the Year after taking the program from the five-win total in her first season to 11 victories in year two. A native of Mastic Beach, N.Y., Barnes Arico helped lead Stony Brook Univer-sity to the 1989 NCAA Division III Tournament as a freshman. She spent her final three seasons at Montclair State University, serving as captain during her junior and senior seasons. Barnes Arico led the team to back-to-back ECAC Tournament appearances in 1991 and 1992 and was the team’s lead-ing scorer both seasons. A scholar-athlete award recipient, Barnes Arico graduated from Montclair State in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health. Barnes Arico went into teaching after graduation, accepting a position as a physical education and health teacher at the Academy of Saint Aloysius in Jersey City, N.J., during the 1993-94 academic year. She left Saint Aloysius and moved into an identical position at Chatham High School from 1994-96 in Chatham, N.J. Barnes Arico and her husband, Larry Arico, are the parents of a son, Trevor, and daughters Emma and Cecelia.
