May-JuneThe 18th Virginia Health Law Legislative Update and Extravaganza attracts 113 registrants. Attorney General Mark Herring addresses leaders at the Young Lawyers Division spring meeting. Leaders perform strategic review. The VBA Membership Committee hosts a statewide Phone-A-Thon, reaching more than 500 members. More than 75 renewed memberships.

AprilA Real Estate Law Section social promotes networking and VBA recruitment at the University of Richmond School of Law.

Two Appellate Practice Section socials – April and July – encourage membership and camaraderie.

The Legal Food Frenzy marked its 10th year with 170 entities participating. They raised 1.5 million pounds of food, up 15% from 2015.

February-MarchVBA leaders meet for the VBA Leadership Conference. They are encouraged to plan out their year.

A YLD webinar provides job advice for diverse attorneys and law students.

Plans advance for April activities: the Chief Justice’s Pro Bono Summit, a Legal Writing Workshop in D.C., and the Bankruptcy Law Conference, which changes location from Duck, N.C., to Kingsmill Resort in Virginia.

JanuaryJames Patrick Guy II becomes VBA president at the 126th Annual Meeting in Williamsburg. Former Justice John Charles Thomas accepts the association’s highest honor. Justice D. Arthur Kelsey’s portrait is unveiled.

Changes in the VBA and The VBA Foundation bylaws add a general counsel role and new officers.

The Contruction and Public Contracts Law Section introduces its blog.

OctoberThe Criminal Law Section introduces a White Collar Criminal Law Forum, held at the University of Richmond.

The YLD opens its fall meeting to all young lawyer members and ramps up CLE offerings. 44 attorneys attended.

The Virginia Bar Association Foundation adds a category – YLD Patrons – for gifts of $75-$149. Donations benefit VBA charitable and educational programs.

SeptemberThe VBA and Legal Services of Northern Virginia present A Spotlight on Veterans Legal Issues to 54 attendees.The Conference on Labor Relations and Employment Law meets in Richmond with record high registration numbers. It introduces a program to specifically appeal to young lawyers. The EEOC commissioner returns, and four judges present during the 2-day event.

July-AugustAnthony J. Gambardella Jr. and Guy T. Tripp III receive the VBA’s William B. Spong, Jr., Professionalism Award at the Summer Meeting. Marshall M. Curtis accepted the Summer Meeting Award. Virginia CLE approved the conference for 8 MCLE Credits (3.5 Ethics).The ABA YLD Awards of Achievement recognize VBA Young Lawyers programs with a national first place, second place and special recognition.
