1 SPRING 2016 NEWSLETTER 2015-16 Officers: (Elected at the AGM on July 12, 2015) President Donna Doelman 264-1034 Vice-President Ian MacDonald 264-1183 Past President Gord Ennis 341-1934 Secretary Judy Courrier (vacant) Treasurer Gord Welby (vacant) Lake Steward Eric Boysen 268-2643 Newsletter Connie Stackhouse 264-2459 Website Brenda Burich 258-9852 Pumps/Winter Patrol Bud Ennis 326-0412 Directors at Large Martin Ennis Rob Ferrier 416-335-4993 267-7781 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: THE IMPORTANCE OF THREE This time I have three thoughts to share: 1) If a fire approached your property, would you know what to do? The Alberta devastation coupled with a very dry spring in our area, should cause us all to pause and put together an emergency plan. A resource put out by Public Safety Canada is excellent and available at www.getprepared.ca . I will bring some copies to our July 9 th Annual General Meeting (AGM). 2) Hold the date Sunday August 14 th to attend the 12:30 p.m. seminar on Cottage Sharing Agreements. Read the details in the newsletter. Admission is included with payment of your Bennett & Fagan Lakes Association $30 membership. Register early through the Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations (FOCA). Space is limited at the Perth Legion Hall. 3) It is time for a New President! As I complete my 3 rd and final year, know that I highly recommend the experience. It will expand your knowledge, skills and networking base while it decreases your time for sleeping and relaxing. May I stress that joining the Board is not just for retired folks. We have a wonderful balance of those who work fulltime and those who work while retired. The important quality is that you are willing to commit and share your expertise. Please either let your name stand or encourage someone else. In addition to being a detailed communicator, I believe having current computer skills is essential…unless you have an administrative assistant in your household. The position of president is elected annually at the AGM. Board members are elected with non- specific duties. The key positions of Secretary and Treasurer are currently vacant and can be filled immediately on a volunteer basis until the election is held. The need is great… and so are our blessings from having property on the shores of Bennett and Fagan Lakes. No excuses… just…step

Cottage Sharing Agreements Learn how to Keep the ‘Family’ in the Family Cottage

Sunday, August 14th, 2016 12:30–2:30pm @ Perth Legion, 26 Beckwith Street East, Perth Feature Speaker: Peter Lillico Estate Planning Lawyer Pre-register to secure your space [email protected] 705-749-3622 FREE to members of FOCA & Member Associations $10 at the door for non-members “The single most important step a parent can take is to ensure that a Cottage Sharing Agreement is developed during their lifetimes with the children as part of the overall cottage succession plan.

It’s not lack of interest, capital gains tax or other financial pressures that result in most family cottages going up for sale; it’s a consequence of friction within the family that arises from sharing ownership and usage.” ~PeterLillico
