Born in Sydney, Australia, Belinda Trussell spent her childhood living in such diverse places as Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Atlanta, Georgia. In 1987, Belinda moved to Toronto, Canada, where she competed at the Young Riders level. She retained her Australian passport and represented her native country in all Young Riders competitions until 1994 when she became a Canadian citizen.
After completing her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Commerce from the University of Toronto in 1994 and attending George Brown College to study Culinary Management, Belinda moved to Germany to train and compete under the guidance of Christilot Boylen and Udo Lange. In the following years, Belinda trained numerous horses and riders to the FEI level. It was during this time that her name became synonymous with excellence both in the schooling ring and the show ring.
Early in 2002, Belinda acquired the 12-year-old
Oldenburg Grand Prix horse, Royan II. Within five months, she went on to represent Canada as the youngest member of the Canadian Dressage Team at the 2002 World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain. In 2003 and 2004 Belinda and Royan represented Canada at the European Dressage Championships and the World Cup in Duesseldorf, Germany, respectivaly. Royan helped fulfill Belinda’s Olympic dream as the pair were members of the Canadian team at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Following the Olympics, Belinda acquired a 2000 dark bay Oldenberg gelding named Anton. Developing an instant connection, the pair moved up quickly through the levels and winning ribbons, championships, and accolades from Saugerties to Devon to Blainville along the way. Belinda and Anton had an incredible 2010 competition season in Wellington, Florida where they earned their first Grand Prix Special score over 70%! Belinda went on to be a 2010 World Equestrian Games team member for Canada and had her best result at a major games to date.

I grew up as an only child in Southern California and was in love with horses. I would think about horses non stop! The highlight of my life was when summer came and my mom would send me to Montana for the summer to stay with my grandparents and they would take me to rent horses. My mom would also take me when she could to rent a horse in Pasadena, California. When I was 11 or 12 we moved to Newport Beach, California, I saved up about $400 mowing lawns, pet sitting, and baby sitting and bought my first horse. When I was 15 I got my first job working at a rent string in Laguna Canyon. When I was 19 I went to work for 3 years for a show horse trainer named Morey Leavitt, that job started my love for showing
and training show horses. After working for Morey I worked for Larry Gimple. I then started on a mission to learn from many of the people that I had admired. I would go to ride with some of these great trainers and I am so grateful for all I learned. The trainers that I learned from were so open and giving with their knowledge. I have taken some of their methods and joined them with my own and have developed my own program, which I feel I am able to explain and share with other people through my DVDs and articles. I love horses and I am a strong supporter in kind and humane training techniques and building a solid foundation. When you take the time to do it right, you have a horse that lasts a lifetime!

James C. Wofford, 67, was born and raised on a horse farm in Milford, Kansas. He is a graduate of Culver Military Academy, and the School of Business at the University of Colorado (B.S. Bus. Admin. ’69). Wofford, a 3-time Olympian, has spent his life with horses, and is one of the best-known Eventing trainers in the world today. In 2000, Wofford was listed by the Chronicle of the Horse as one of the “50 Most Influential Horseman” of the 21st century, and in January of 2012, he was awarded the Jimmie Williams Trophy for Lifetime Achievement, the sports’ highest honor. A Hall of Fame member of both the United States Eventing Association and Culver Military Academy, Wofford trains at his farm in Upperville, Va., and travels extensively, teaching and giving clinics.
Wofford has had at least one student on every U.S. Olympic, World Championship, and Pan-American team since 1978.All four members of the U.S.Bronze medal team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, as well as David O’Connor, the Individual Gold medal winner, were graduates of Wofford’s program. In addition, 3 out of the 4 members of the 2002 Gold Medal team at the World Equestrian Games were his former students. Kim Severson, the Individual Silver Medal winner at the Athens Olympics, and Gina Miles, the Individual Silver Medal winner at the Beijing Olympics, are both graduates of Wofford’s program.
He was named USOC Developmental Coach of the Year in both 1998 and 1999. In 2007 Wofford was named a Fellow of the USEA Instructors Certification Program.
Widely sought after as a clinician and coach, Wofford is equally well known as an author. His first book, TRAINING THE 3-DAY EVENT HORSE AND RIDER, is
now back in print after selling out the first print run, while his second book, GYMNASTICS: SYSTEMATIC TRAINING OF THE JUMPING HORSE is currently being revised and updated for republication in the summer of 2012. Two other books, TAKE A GOOD LOOK AROUND, and 101 EVENTING TIPS, are both available.

My love for barrel racing, people, and horses has inspired me to teach the secrets to my success! At my clinics, it is my goal to teach students three things about barrel racing: How horsemanship directly affects your success; How to develop a winning practice routine for you and your horse; and How to stay on the track to success!
Throughout the clinic, I will show students and their horses the steps to follow and achieve quick, snappy turns and make their runs more consistent. I teach the horsemanship traditions that I use everyday on the horses that I ride and compete on! Horsemanship is not something that you learn overnight! I feel like I am always learning and studying horsemanship, and I probably will forever!! I have had some great teachers, from my family, to my idols, to my great horses…Let me tell you a little about where I come from! I was born in Pincher Creek, AB, andthen moved to Montana when I was 5. My parents, Chuck and Julie Swanson competed in rodeo as saddle bronc
rider and barrel racer. My dad competed several times at the NFR, and then worked on ranches riding and breaking horses. My mom was a Reserve Canadian Champ. Barrel Racer, as well as a jockey. She worked on ranchesbreaking horses and training barrel horses as well. My grand father was a rancher and jockey using his gentle horsemanship to handle his high-spirited thorobreds and use them for ranch horses My parents instilled an intense competitive streak in me (mixed with a little stubbornness!) and taught me the traditions of the horsemanship that has run in our family for generations! Along with this knowledge, I have strived to learn all that I can from many different horsemen (and women). Some of my idols have been: Charmayne James- for her admirable positive attitude and horsemanship that carried her to many world titles; Jerry Diaz (the Mexican Charro) – for his amazing horsemanship; and Clint Johnson- for his great competitive strength and class as a champion.

Terri McKinney along with my husband Chuck & daughter Taylor run and own Wild Deuce Retreats & Outfitting southwest of Rocky Mountain House AB. We are an outfit that goes for the personal touch and offer, pack trips, high mountain experience, mountain horse training and clinics like no other. With about 40 000 mountain miles under my belt over the years, this is where I love to be a student of the horse. We train each horse to their personality & breed, not one set program. We must train the inside of the horse, before the outside. Our horse clinics reflect on how and why the horse thinks in their natural environment and will forever change how you think about the horse. When I walk into the round pen I do so not as a human, but from the perspective of the wild horse. I have been lucky to watch the wild horse each summer while outfitting and the horse has been my teacher, not any human. “When you are taking complete beginners into the mountains crossing rivers, up steep narrow trails to 7000 feet in bear country, you NEED quality trained horses because it can turn life & death in a hurry.” I have learned what a true partnership is with a horse by creating a thinking horse. We are not just making mountain horses, we are making pure partners. You can’t show your horse every obstacle in life. Just ask us, with 15 women in tow at 6000 feet with a standing grizzly on her trail things get real in a hurry. In the summer we are either at our mountain base camp by Peppers Lake or at their hidden high camp tucked along the Clearwater river in the Bighorn Backcountry. In the mountains we train only 5 client horses per season. In July they switch gears to clinics in the mountains showing folks how to “lead the herd”. In August with Chuck in his covered wagon and Terri and Taylor with their pack strings in tow along with 10 guests, make the 20 miles trek for a trip of a lifetime! They run both co-ed & Ladies Retreats but host only 4 per season so it does not become a job. Once the snow hits they are off to their winter
home in Arizona with 8 horses to get going for the upcoming season. Chuck is the avid ranch roper of the family enjoying this all through the winter. At the end of the day it is for Terri what the horse thinks of her not the human.

The Trainers Challenge is an unique opportunity to see 4 trainers put there skills to work to show the public their abilities and methods of training an unbroke horse. This is NOT the way these trainers would normally start a colt, what they do in the 4 days of the Challenge they might take 30 – 60 days or more to get the horse really working well at all of the different skills they are training into the colts. This Challenge is meant to be a venue to educate the public that there are more than one or two ways that you can start a colt and succeed at getting a quiet broke horse.
The format will have 4 – Trainers, 4 – Horses and 4 – Judges. Keep in mind that these horses will have just started their training to become that broke horse. The trainers are progressing far quicker than they normally would always keeping the horses best interest at heart.
The judging at this challenge is based 10% on the horse, 60% on the trainer’s ability to train the horse and 30% on the trainer’s ability to educate the attendees. So the trainer that gets his/her horse to do the most or does a better presentation at the finals won’t necessarily win. The winner of the challenge will be the trainer that can achieve the highest success with both the horse & the Spectators.
Hugh McLennan “Voice” of The Mane Event Trainers ChallengeHugh’s commentary and dialogue with the trainers has been a big factor in keeping the audience aware of the subtle but steady progress made by the colts in every session. Using spontaneous humour and a savvy understanding of the science of starting colts he makes the sessions highly entertaining for the crowd and helps each trainer feel comfortable under the pressure of the clock.Combining years of
experience as a working rancher and horse trainer with a professional broadcasting background Hugh brings a level of comfort to his sessions behind the microphone. His nationally syndicated weekly radio show “The Spirit of the West” is heard across a large network of radio stations in Canada and the U.S., and on demand at www.hugh-mclennan.com. As well as still raising cattle and working with horses,
JudgesOur challenge would not be the high quality that it is without the high standards that our judges bring to the event.
HorsesWe would like to take this time to thank Ace of Clubs Quarter Horses for supplying the horses that will be used in the Challenge. You can visit their website at www.aceofclubsquarterhorses.com
Ace of Clubs Quarter Horses is incredibly proud to be supplying the horses used in the 2016 Trainers Challenge. The new format being introduced to the show this year promises to make it not only a bigger, better all encompassing venue to horse enthusiasts, as well it will be showcasing 4 outstanding horse trainers! What better opportunity to see our stock put to the ultimate test?
Ace of Clubs Quarter Horses continual goal is to produce horses that we want to ride, & are proud to ride; horses that can take the pressure of working all day in the pasture, or light up an arena. We want a versatile horse; horses with heart, intelligence, athletic ability, speed, and size, with good looks to complete the package.

Doug & Lynette have two great passions, their family and helping people with horses. They feel very blessed to be able to combine the two. Their kids (Kyle, Kade, Kaylee and Kelcie), are all actively involved in teaching the training thru trust program. If they aren’t on the road sharing their knowledge they are at home at Mills Ranch getting in as much family time as possible. Doug and Lynette are proud grandparents to their two grandkids Rion & Rex and are grateful for their amazing in laws Justine, Danielle and Jim. As a family the Mills enjoy a lot of different activities, whatever it is they are doing, it is always rich in laughter. The Mills family also runs a trail riding
business which was established by Doug’s mom and dad Maxine and Henry Mills in 1986. They hold a few horsemanship camps at their facility in Kamloops each year. Doug’s mom Maxine lives with Doug and Lynette and holds down the fort when they are on the road. We are blessed as a family to be able to do what we love!

Patrick King was very fortunate to grow up riding and competing with many breeds of horses in various disciplines. He’s just as comfortable flying over a jump, driving a team of drafts, or roping and sorting cattle as he is starting colts and riding canter pirouettes in the dressage arena. Early on, though, a horse came into his life that wouldn’t put up with inadequacy on the part of the human. A challenge from this horse threatened Patrick’s life and sparked a new journey that didn’t involve ribbons.
His was set on a quest to find true horsemanship… Since then, Patrick has been fortunate enterprise1enough to make friends and spend time with some of the industry’s top horsemen, and has also spent countless hours studying the work of the old masters. Being offered the rare opportunity to spend extended time living and learning with master horseman Ray Hunt and his wife Carolyn catapulted Patrick’s horsemanship. It became a simple way of
life to have a ‘real job’ for each horse, even from the first ride. Horsemanship turned from a ‘practiced science’ into a ‘living art’ under Ray’s watchful eyes and priceless guidance.
Elvie.halfpassLike you, Patrick seeks to be an eternal student of the horse and the horsemen that have come before him – and he feels it is his duty to share the knowledge that he has gained along his journey. Throughout the year, he travels around helping people and their horses through his clinics, camps, workshops, and expo demonstrations. His students are of all levels and disciplines, from Grand Prix Dressage riders to more casual riders that aren’t interested in competing but are still very serious about their horsemanship. What Patrick teaches is not so much an exercise or drill, as so many other clinicians and trainers teach, but a feel. It’s a feel that becomes a connection and a synchronicity of two minds and two bodies, the horse and the human.

Scott Purdum is a nationally recognized clinician, who is helping horse owners around the country with his unique and proven training methods. Scott’s special relationship with horses began at a very young age. Recognizing Scott’s natural ability with horses, his parents purchased his first horse for him at age 3 and began nurturing his talent and love of horsemanship. By the time he was 6 years old, he was showing in hunter and pleasure, which he continues to this day. Growing up and working on his family’s horse farm gave Scott limitless opportunity to develop his sound methods for training horses. As a riding instructor in both the English and Western disciplines, he soon recognized the importance of
incorporating those training methods to help riders form positive working relationships with their horses.
Scott has worked as an intern with top-rated Quarter Horse trainer Ken Adkins of West Virginia and studied equine science at the University of Maryland. He has authored several articles featuring problem-solving training exercises, and also produced the popular 2-disc training DVD, “Where Do We Start?” Scott resides in Union Bridge, Maryland, where he offers clinics, trains horses, runs a Professional Trainer program, and provides riding instruction, as well as traveling the country offering large group sessions and one-on-one instruction.
